Very good plus.
Description
(London): (Lloyd's Register of Shipping), 1926. Very good plus.. Rare presentation copy of this paper by the renowned airship engineer and inventor of the bouncing bomb, signed "with the Author's Love to his Assistant" - his wife and longtime airship confidante Mary (Bloxham) Wallis. Though later generations know him best for inventing the "bouncing bomb" used against German dams in World War II, in the 1920s Barnes Wallis's heart still belonged to Rigid Airships. When he was not designing them for the Airship Guarantee Company as part of the Imperial Airship Scheme (for purposes discussed in this paper), he was describing them to his beloved future wife, Mary (Molly) Bloxham, whom he met in 1922 and married in 1925. As Bloxham had just begun medical studies at University College London when they met and Wallis was twice her age, Bloxham's father wisely forbade him to write to her about anything but mathematics. Airships entered their correspondence almost immediately and offer a reliable index of both parties' moods and growing affections: "You see all my heart is in Airships," Wallis explained, and later, "I'm in a way rather depressed about Airships." Bloxham replied faithfully: "I am so sorry about the Airships, Barnes," and on better days, "Barnes, I am so awfully glad about the airships." Wallis constantly praised and encouraged Bloxham's progress in math and engineering ("you ARE most awfully brainy"), in large part because the more she learned, the more conversations they could have about airships: "I think when we have done enough trig. I shall have to start writing you a book on Airships, so that I can talk to you about them freely." Both in his private correspondence and in this paper, Wallis was firmly optimistic about the safety of airships and the advantages of hydrogen over helium: "In a modern suitably designed airship the possibility of its catching fire is so small as to be almost negligible," he explains; "we are definitely of the opinion that hydrogen is no longer a source of danger in an airship." While Wallis was designing His Majesty's Airship R100 for the Airship Guarantee Company, a sister ship, the R101, was simultaneously in development by a separate design team at the Royal Airship Works. The latter embarked on its first overseas flight in 1930 and promptly crashed and exploded. Wallis, a practical man despite his faith in airships, moved on to designing aircraft fuselage and eventually bombs, which also explode, but on purpose. A unique association copy of a rare publication in aeronautical history. 9.5'' x 7.75''. Original saddle-stapled printed wrappers. 13, [1] pages followed by 9 black-and-white airship diagrams. Inscribed by Wallis on front wrapper: "With the Authors Love / to his Assistant. / BNW." Moderate foxing to wrappers and scattered throughout.

Description
[Prairie View, Ks, 1890. Good plus.. Albumen photograph, 8 x 10 inches, on a decorative mount measuring 11.5 x 13.5 inches. Bottom right corner of mount chipped, moderate staining, soiling, and foxing, minor surface wear to image. A striking large-format photograph memorializing an African American religious service inside the spacious First Baptist Church in Prairie View, Kansas in the late-19th century. The pencil annotation on the verso reads, "1st Baptist Church Prairie View, Kansas." The photograph was taken from behind and to the side of the pulpit; the scene captures a wizened preacher standing in front of a congregation comprised of about a hundred African American men and women decked out in their Sunday finest. The service may have taken place on or around the Fourth of July, as streamers converge on an American flag mounted above the lectern. It does not appear that a First Baptist Church still operates in Prairie View, which even today is a small town, with only a little over a hundred residents as of the last census. The present image captures about that many people in one African American Baptist Church a long time ago.

Description
London: Printed for J. Johnson.. 1800 The seventh edition, "with considerable additions and improvements; particularly an abridgment of natural history, with upwards of twenty new cuts…" (p. iii). The first edition was published in 1783. The "additions and improvements" mentioned on the title-page of this work first appeared in the third edition (1791), followed by minor adjustments in subsequent editions. Per OCLC, the claim that the work is illustrated with "upwards of twenty new cuts" began with the fourth edition of 1792 (ESTC does not note this). An advertisement that appears after the Preface in this edition claims that revisions and improvements have been made to the following sections: "The Articles of Physics, (particularly on Volcanoes) Cosmography, Geography, and History," which might be proven via "very slight comparison." The fifth and sixth editions also contain an identical advertisement. All editions are scarce. Original sprinkled sheep, gilt-ruled spine, edges sprinkled blue. Twelvemo. Nine engraved plates of Greek mythological figures, the solar system, maps of the world and Europe, and twenty-five textual illustrations, including animals and scientific diagrams. Front hinge cracked, but holding. Binding extremities a bit worn. Light offsetting from plates, minor black ink stains to pp. 244-245, not affecting legibility. Contemporary ink signature and date on front pastedown. A very good copy of a scarce work. Richard Turner's (bap. 1753-1788) was a schoolmaster, educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford. His six extant published works were written primarily for the education of young people, including An heretical history (1778) and A view of the earth as it was known to the ancients (1779). An Easy Introduction to the Arts and Sciences was one of his most successful books and frequently cites the work of Benjamin Franklin. It had reached its nineteenth edition in 1825; as late as 1832, it reappeared "altered and improved" by another hand, but still described as "originally compiled by R. Turner" (Oxford DNB)

Description
Two vols. Large & thick 8vo, orig. brown cloth, spines gilt, t.e.g. London: “Printed by Order of the Trustees” [of the] British Museum, 1908. “Historians of the Civil War and Commonwealth can hardly sing too highly the praises of the London bookseller George Thomason (1600?-1666) who, from 1640 to 1661, collected nearly 23,000 ephemeral tracts, pamphlets, news sheets and other broadsides mainly of a political or satirical nature and bound them, in chronological order, in 2000 volumes. After various vicissitudes, the collection was purchased in 1762 by George III for the British Museum…Every scholar knows the two handsome volumes of the catalogue published in 1908 by G.K. Fortescue… “Thomason was a true bibliographer; on the title of every pamphlet he carefully noted the actual day of publication.”–De Ricci, p. 29. The Preface by Fortescue contains a biography — necessarily somewhat sketchy for not much is known — of Thomason with details on the history of the collection. Nice set from the library of Robert S. Pirie. ❧ Besterman 2675.
