Description
1938. YOSHIKAWA, H. and Y. Kamera to Kikansha. Kamera und Lokomotiv. 195 pp. Illustrated throughout with photographs. 8vo, 190 x 210 mm., bound in publisher's cloth. Tokyo: Genkosha, 1938. A fine copy of this prewar photo-book on Japanese steam trains by Hayao Yoshikawa (1890-1959), who was best known for his books on photographic techniques. In addition to the imaginative photographs, great care was given to the choice of typography and layout. Especially rare with its impressive dustwrapper and slipcase. OCLC lists only a 1993 version in the National Diet Library. Small piece missing from spine of duswrapper, otherwise an exceptional copy.

Description
London: Marcus Ward & Co, 1878. Second edition. With 51 drawings on wood and 6 etchings by Léopold Flameng. Original publishers decorated cloth, rebacked and recornered in morocco, a.e.g.; interior excellent. First edition published in England; it appears the first edition in English was printed in Philadelphia the prior year, all from the original French of 1864. An excellent biography of Columbus, with details on his various trips to the new world, including lovely illustrations. Written for all ages, it does not necessarily provide any new information over and above what you learned in school, but it is a fascinating story nonetheless.

Description
Philadelphia: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1999. Softcover. VG (Book block edges only slightly soiled, otherwise Like New.). Blue & color illus. wraps. 160 pp. 57 bw, 76 color plates. Issued in conjunction with 1999-2000 exhibitions of selected works by American artist Maxfield Parrish. With essays by Sylvia Yount and Mark F. Bockrath. Highly illustrated. Contents as follows: Forewords / Serena Rattazzi and Daniel Rosenfeld -- Lenders to the exhibition -- Dream days: the art of Maxfield Parrish / Sylvia Yount -- "Frank imagination, within a beautiful form": the painting methods of Maxfield Parrish / Mark F. Bockrath. Abstract: "Maxfield Parrish has long been considered one of the most popular American artists of the twentieth century. Brilliant blue skies, pastoral landscapes, and captivating figures are his art's signature characteristics. Yet the universal interest in Parrish's art has, in the past, hindered his work from receiving scholarly attention. Maxfield Parrish 1870-1966 offers a critical look at his life and career." "As an artist who produced images intended for a mass audience, Parrish's widespread appeal has been the most defining aspect of his reputation. His breadth was enormous; covers for magazines such as Harper's Bazar, Scribners, Century, and Life; book jackets; theater sets; paintings; photographs; murals in fine hotels like New York's St. Regis; and graphic work ranging from posters to calendars." "This extensive look at the life and career of Maxfield Parrish is realized in the insightful texts of Sylvia Yount and Mark F. Bockrath. Including a wealth of never-before-published full-color illustrations, and a discussion of the physical construction of Parrish's paintings and his unique techniques. Maxfield Parrish 1870-1966 will appeal to readers who enjoy the purely aesthetic nature of Parrish's art, as well as to those interested in the more critical assessment of his place in the history of American art."--Jacket.

Description
Washington DC: U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, 1974. Paperback. Very Good. Paperback. A Report of the Maryland State Advisory Committee to the US Commission on Civil Rights prepared for the information and consideration of the Commission. Side stapled yellow paper wrappers with black title to front panel. Light soiling / browning to edges of wrappers, but clean and bright overall. A study of discrimination based on race within various trades such as electrician, carpenter, roofer, painter, plumber, welder. Numbers of union and non-union workers in these (and additional) trades are listed including minority and non-minority workers. Quotes from multiple minority workers about their personal experiences with inequality in hiring / training / jobs are included. An interesting study made during an important time of Civil Rights in our country. It seems that despite federal laws, there was still a large disadvantage for minorities seeking employment in construction trades in Baltimore. At the end of the end of the study data, there is a chapter on "recommendations" and several appendices including follow-up letters from attorneys representing african americans, letters from government officials, updates on following up with individual construction agencies, etc. 59 pages. BALT/011420.
