Description
London: Chapman & Hall, 1848. First edition. Very Good. A Christmas Carol is the correct first printing with "Stave I" and the textual points outlined in Smith, with the half-title printed in blue and the title-page printed in red and blue. Complete with the four inserted hand-colored steel engraved plates. The Cricket on the Hearth with the textual points outlined in Smith and the second state of the advertisement for Oliver Twist. The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain with the points outlined in Smith. Three volumes in one (162 x 100 mm). Complete. Early dark green morocco over dark green marbled boards. Gilt-titled spine in six compartments with raised bands. Marbled endpapers. Ink gift inscription, dated 1938, to preliminary blank. Margins trimmed a bit short. A Very Good copy. Dickens' beloved Christmas story of Ebenezer Scrooge's redemption after being visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve. Scrooge is made to see the dangers and consequences of his miserly ways and awakens the following morning infused with the spirit of Christmas giving. "A tale to make the reader laugh and cry - to open his hands, and open his heart to charity even toward the uncharitable...a dainty dish to set before a King" (contemporary review in London's Athenaeum magazine). Smith, Part II: 4, 6, 9. Very Good.

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1902. FIRST EDITION. Frontispiece photographic image of the author looking quite dashing with his costume and rifle, 2 folding maps and numerous full-page and text photographic illustrations. Modern cloth with the original illustrated cover pasted on, card of the Norfolk & Norwich Library on the bottom of the front cover and their large bookplate on the paste-down, new endpapers; interior very clean. First edition. The author gives a riveting account of his travels in Central Asia, specifically his time hunting big game. Released at a time when much of this part of the world was unknown to the European traveler, the author describes his journeys through Tibet, Siberia, Tian Shan, and the Himalayas, including stories about the people he met and the fascinating political climate. This work provides a detailed and interesting look at life in Central Asia for both travelers and residents at the end of the nineteenth century. Lawrence John Lumley Dundas, 2nd Marquess of Zetland (styled Lord Dundas until 1892 and Earl of Ronaldshay between 1892 and 1929), was a British Conservative politician. He served as Secretary of State for India in the late 1930’s.
