Description
New York City: The New School for Social Research, 1953. 5.5" x 3.5. Black text on card; fine. 5.5" x 3.5" Louis Untermeyer (b.1885 - d.1977) and Max Eastman (b.1883 - d.1969) were both prominent New York poets and editors who in their own ways were swept up by the effects of McCarthyism. Eastman, once a defender of socialism and the Bolshevik Revolution had turned politically and initially supported the House Un-American Activities Committee while Untermeyer who was never a communist at all, was wrapped up in a scandal by association and ejected from his panel position on the television show What's My Line? and subsequently banned from television by the networks. This announcement card from The New School promotes lectures about modern poetry by both men, though a week apart from one another, Untermeyer on Thursday, April 9th and Eastman on Thursday, April 16th.

Description
London: Effingham Wilson, Royal Exchange; and Sherwood, Neely, & Jones, 1820. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. 2 volumes. Each featured person (all men) has a full page biography and an engraved portrait. Each volume includes approximately 100 persons. Very good in green full leather with intricate gilt decoration on boards and spines. Raised bands, gilt titles, volume numbers, and decorations to spine. Slight sunning to spines, some light wear to edges and corners, and minor rubbing to spine and boards; otherwise, in wonderful condition with very bright gilt. Marbled endpapers and full gilt edges. The early pages in volume 1 have some thin spots (a paper defect) and a previous owner has reinforced these small areas with discreetly with clear tape that appears to be archival. Effected pages include blank free endpages, verso of title page, table of contents, and verso of first text page. The interior of volume 1 is foxed throughout , with the foxing lessening towards middle of book. There is also light foxing in volume 2. There is some pencil writing on first endpage in volume one. Text and engraved portraits remain bright. The binding is nice and tight. A beautiful set, especially in light of its age, even though it contains no eminent women. Biography. BIO/2253.
