Description
[Louisville: Hanna & Co., Printers, 1861. 16pp. Caption title [as issued]. Stitched, Very Good. This is the first edition of the Appeal, reprinted four additional times in early 1861, "to lend your influence in staying the storm that is sweeping to ruin both our social fabric and our political existence." Sabin identifies the author, who calls himself "A Voice from Kentucky," as William Coleman. He writes from Louisville in January 1861, after secession of "several States," with other States "on the eve of severing their connection with the Federal Government." Northern disregard of the Fugitive Slave Act, and northern treatment of southerners as moral pariahs, have caused the crisis. He seeks help from "Conservative Brethren of the North. . . in rolling back the tide of Black Republican fanaticism." At the bottom of page 16, in bold type: "Merchants and others wishing to send this Appeal to their friends and correspondents, can procure copies at the rate of $1 per hundred, or $10 per thousand, on application to HANNA & CO., Printers. . ." FIRST EDITION. LCP 637. Bartlett 160. Sabin 1783a [not identifying edition]. Not in Coleman, Decker, Eberstadt, Nevins.

Description
Los Angeles and Environs, 1919. Photograph album measuring 6 ½ x 8 inches with fifty-one photographs, each 4 ⅜ x 2 ⅞ inches. Front page captioned “California 1919 / Flowers / Animals.” Fine condition, no visible flaws. A visually compelling and very charming relic of early motor tourism, this collection of photographs of the flora and fauna of Southern California was taken by a Michigan photographer, who judging by the quality of the images, was either a professional or a very talented amateur. Most of the images are somewhat formal studies of trees and flowers, some of which have been hand-colored. Other images show the Model T parked precariously in the desert, others show animals at the zoo, one shows the Los Angeles Ostrich Farm opposite Lincoln Park.

Description
(HORSE RACING). ALS. 3pg. 8 x 9 . February 7, 1833. New York, NY. An autograph letter signed Eliza Colden to William P. Haskins of Troy, New York. The letter regards a racetrack rental gone wrong. This is a very early mention of American racetracks, since they were not in common use until after the Civil War. In part: I understand that Mr. Colden wrote yesterday to Mrs. Wells making an offer for the Course but at the time he did it he had no conception that Mr. Dey had gone over to the other party and rented the course to Burrs man Mr. Botts during the next Races for the trifling sum of $350. I feel hurt to think that while we were doing every thing in good faith to aid and assist and after having spent my money that we should be thus treated Mr. Dey, not even thinking it worth while to mention the subject to either myself or Mr. Colden. Had Mr. Dey done his duty and got possession and you wished to have rented the property you might have got $1000 for it during next May Races. I write this letter without the knowledge of Mr. Colden, in order if possible to prevent mischief which I fear it will be too late to prevent. He is outrageous and says that as the other party have acted treacherously and gone over too Burr he does not see why he should not make terms with Burr also Burr had made overtures to him which he has here to fore rejected with disdain as I am told but I now fear your will be the sufferers. Many early racetracks were operated by the rich to showcase their horses; they frequently appeared and quickly disappeared. Eliza Colder may have been related to Cadwallader Colden (1769-1834), the mayor of New York City from 1818 to 1821. Aaron Burr (1756-1836) was Vice President and the killer of Alexander Hamilton in a duel; later in life, he served as a New York attorney. The letter is in fine condition, with light toning and folds.

Description
ALS, 1page, 8vo., (June, 1833). An interesting letter commenting to an unnamed recipient on the imminent publication of the first issue of his Revue mensuel d'economie politique, the forerunner of the important Journal des economistes. The Revue, though short-lived, attracted the support of Sismondi, Blanqui, Rossi, and Buret. In addaition to his pioneering contribution to French economic journalism, Fix (1800- 1846) produced a significant book on the working classes and the role of the state, which was published in the last year of his life. His original economic philosophy, elaborated here, fell somewhere between French liberalism and welfare school of Sismondi. See Joseph Garnier's long appreciative notice Coquelin & Guillaumin.

The company of Cianchettini & Sperati existed from ca. 1807 to 1811 (see Humphries & Smith p. 104). "Romberg's career as a violinist can hardly been separated from that of his cousin Bernhard... His symphonies, string quartets, and quintets with flute or clarinet are original and independent. Works in other genres... have been underestimated. Romberg's craftsmanship is evident not only in obligato writing but also in his mastery of strict counterpoint, which he uses against the prevailing trend of his time." Klaus G. Werner in MGG2. Description
Honolulu: Matson Navigation Lines, 1953. Bifolium [35 cm x 53 cm] printed in full-color. Nice condition. Near fine. Dinner menu from the S.S. Lurline that features cover art by Eugene Savage. There were four ocean liners christened S.S. Lurline by Matson Lines, these menus were for the fourth ship with that name. The S.S. Lurline was a luxury ocean liner that would take passengers from the American West Coast to Hawaii and Australia. The Hawaiian port was Honolulu, where most passengers would disembark the ship and make a beeline for Matson's renowned Waikiki hotel and resort, the Royal Hawaiian. Eugene Francis Savage (1883-1978) was a trained sculptor and artist, who was primarily known for his large murals. Savage was commissioned by Matson Navigation Lines to paint nine large (4' x 8') Hawaiian themed murals, that were intended to be displayed on Matson ocean liners. These murals were completed in 1940, but due to American involvement in World Ward II, the ships were dedicated to the war effort, and the murals were never installed. In 1948 the Murals were used as covers for the menus on the S.S. Lurline. "When Captain James Cook, British Royal Navy, on January 20, 1778 first came upon the Sandwich Islands, later named Hawaii, he was at the height of his fame as a navigator and explorer. But to the islanders Captain Cook was far more than that. He was an incarnation of their god, Lono, come in a floating temple to visit them from the great beyond. At his first landing on the island of Kauai, they fell prostrate along the path and worshipped him as a deity.
