Very good, some wear to the bindings.
Description
[Noyers?, France], ca1810. Contemporary half leather.. Very good, some wear to the bindings.. Two French language notebooks in different hands. Two notebooks, one signed Challan the other with a bookplate imprinted: Challan de Belval. The first notebook appears to be in a secretarial hand. It is a record of a course in materia medica that is divided into 12 classes. Each is covered in turn, providing purpose, context, and scientific background. The second volume is a small 4to. of 364 pp. Here the text is exclusively devoted to specific diseases, cures, and observations; appended to the text is a 30 pp. listing of the formulae for various cures (primarily taken from Lobstein - and so identified). The text is lengthy and highly detailed throughout. References are made back and forth to other entries and to a book the author refers to only as the 'grande livre'. Nonetheless, the record assembled here is one based on his experience. It covers a wide range of ailments - including atypical items like insomnia (p. 216). One tantalizing clue to the author is that in 2007 Swann sold a first edition of Pare that had the Challan de Belval bookplate in it. But no individual record of a collection sale is known.

At the age of 8 he was apprenticed to a printing house in Haarlem. Later, he enlisted as an artillery constable and sailed for New Spain. On his arrival he made the acquaintance of Pedro Ocharte's widow and was welcomed into the printing business. After serving a prison sentence imposed by the Holy Inquisition, which declared him a heretic, he found work in other presses and during his long life printed an impressive amount of work of the highest quality and made great contributions to the bibliography of the printing press in the Americas. .

Description
Cleveland, Ohio, 1928. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong octavo measuring 8" x 5.5". String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards with "photographs of Cleveland" handwritten on the front board. Contains 138 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 3.5" x 6" with some captions. Very good album with rubbing and edgewear with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a primary school teacher in Cleveland, Ohio beginning in 1928. The photos are compiled by a young woman and show her with her friends outside of the school as well as events with her class. The album begins with a photo captioned "The Gang!" and shows the woman and her friends all posed together on a roof top. This is followed by a photo captioned "the male quartet and the Ford" and shows a group of young men hanging out of their new ford. Her "beginner sewing class" is photographed here and a group that was performing "Children of Old Glory" in 1929. She taught cooking and sewing classes and is seen here teaching and posed for class portraits. The classes are seen around a school house, on a picnic, and playing out of doors. Also included is an envelope with loose photographs and negatives from around the same time with one photo of a nurse from 1943. An interesting collection of photographs detailing a young woman's teaching career and time with her friends in Ohio in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Description
Nine full-page & one double-page woodcut illus. and one vignette. Four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, old stitching. [China]: Dun hua tang 敦化堂, 1718. A commercial edition of the Confucian Document Classic, probably intended for candidates for the civil service examinations. The Document Classic, or Venerated Documents, “was recognized during the Han dynasty as one of the ‘Five Classics’ and has served for more than two-thousand years as the foundation of Chinese political philosophy. The text contains the earliest writings in China’s traditional literature, with some chapters dating nearly a thousand years before its recognition as a classic” (Edward L. Shaughnessy in Michael Loewe, ed., Early Chinese Texts: A Bibliographical Guide, p. 376). As a Confucian classic, our book was studied extensively by elite males, and familiarity with it was expected by candidates sitting for the civil service examinations. On its own, the Document Classic was difficult to understand for readers in imperial China, who nevertheless invested it with great importance and meaning. Commentaries on the text thus accrued. In the 12th century, the great Neo-Confucian synthesist Zhu Xi (1130-1200) entrusted one of his disciples—Cai Shen—to produce an edition combining the available commentaries. “Chu Hsi [Zhu Xi] moved freely between the Four Books and Five Classics, treating them holistically as the basis for the thought-world of the classical age. Chu’s efforts culminated with Ts’ai Shen [Cai Shen] 蔡沈 (1167-1230), his student, who used the ‘human and mind of the Tao’ passage for a holistic interpretation of all the chapters in the Documents, a view that became required in the Ming examination curriculum” (Benjamin A. Elman, A Cultural History of Civil Examinations, p. 436). Thus our book became very influential in the Ming period and into the early Qing. Each page of our book is divided into two panels, a common format in Ming and early Qing commercial publishing. The lower panel contains the text of the Document Classic along with Cai’s commentary. The upper panel contains additional commentaries assembled by one Zhu Yun, about whom we find no further information. Zhu is also the author of the book’s list of “Editorial Principles.” Fan Zideng, who is said to have proofread the text, wrote the Preface. Like Cai, Fan stressed the unity of the mind of the ancient sage rulers, which was accessible through the reading of the Document Classic with Cai’s assembled commentary. Our book, in which an earlier reader has made notes, is a good example of commercially produced didactic books. In addition to the Classic itself, it contains supplementary material for students of the text, consisting of mnemonics for memorizing the geographical divisions of ancient China. Very good set; somewhat browned and frayed and with some dampstaining. Thumbing and tears to a few leaves with some loss of text. Preserved in the original hantao.
