Description
Jamaica, 1907. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio. Decorated green cloth with "Scrap Album" embossed on top board. Some wear on the boards, binding a little weak, foxing on some images, and some fading to some images, overall very good. 254 images in a variety of formats - albumen, cynotype, carbon prints, gelatin silver prints, and some others. Sizes vary from small trimmed images up to 8" x 11", with many different variant sizes. Most, but not all, are captioned in ink or pencil. Several are dated ranging from 1898 to 1907. A very engaging album, aside from a couple of commercial images, apparently created by a talented amateur photographer. Although not strictly chronologically mounted, about the first third of the album is set in Ceylon (mostly in and around Colombo), and the rest of the album is set in Jamaica, including several of the aftermath of a deadly earthquake. Although the author isn't clear (there is one image of a young man with a camera on a tripod), the name Gamble probably appears most often, with other images captioned with surnames Brainard, Sims, Berger, Cooke, MacGregor, MacCrindle, and Sanders. The subjects of the pictures run the gamut from family photographs to outdoor life, natives of both locations, and an especially nice group of a couple of dozen images of the aftermath of the 1907 Kingston, Jamaica earthquake, at the time considered one of the world's deadliest earthquakes, claiming near to 1000 lives (included is a portrait of one of the fatalities). A pleasing album with a wide variety of subjects and images.
