Description
New Berne, N.C., 1864. Very good.. Twenty printed general orders, totaling [24]pp. Original plain or lined paper single or folded sheets. Minor overall wear, some dust-soiling, especially to final order. A collection of twenty Union general orders issued in North Carolina during the penultimate year of the Civil War. The orders run from January 25 to May 3, 1864, and were issued by the Sub-District of New Berne, the Forces and Defences, and the District of North Carolina. The orders were all issued by, or by the command of, Brigadier General Innis N. Palmer, whose leadership was instrumental for the Union forces' defense of New Berne in 1864, or Colonel T.I.C. Amory. Palmer's orders here naturally pertain to a wide range of issues, namely internal procedures and organization, military discipline and pay, various military appointments, modifications made to the General Regulations, the maintenance of ordnance stores, and more. All but four of the orders are signed by the relevant adjutant general. One of the more notable orders prints the charges, circumstances, verdicts, and sentences for various courts martial conducted in New Berne in early May 1864. The third soldier charged in the order, Private Charles Alberts of the 12th New York Volunteer Cavalry was accused of assaulting "Jacob Tucker, a colored man" and also of assault and battery as well as the rape of "Emeline Tucker, a colored woman." Alberts was acquitted of all charges. The final order here is a long diatribe by Brigadier General Palmer lambasting his troops for razing the town of Washington, North Carolina; Palmer refers to this incident as "an outrage against humanity, which brings the blush of shame to the cheek of every true man and soldier." The seige and burning of Washington, North Carolina occurred during the last few days of April, as Confederate troops took over the town. Before they left, several Union troops set fire to the settlement and practically destroyed the entire town. Such a collection of field-printed general orders from North Carolina are scarce in the market.

Description
1945. Class photograph of a junior high school cohort in Hawaii, 1945, documents Japanese American student life during wartime military governance following the attack on Pearl Harbor attack. The image captures a predominantly Japanese American student body within a multiracial classroom at a time when the islands were placed under extended martial law rather than mass removal, in contrast to policies enacted on the mainland under Executive Order 9066. The photograph records a cohort that began its schooling under military rule and reached graduation in 1945, providing visual evidence of continuity in education and community life under conditions of surveillance and restricted civil liberties. Large black and white photograph measuring approximately 19.5 x 8 inches, depicting a coeducational class posed in formal arrangement. The group consists largely of Japanese American students alongside other classmates, reflecting the demographic composition of Hawaii during the period. The image documents the class of 1945, with students arranged in rows typical of institutional school portraiture, offering a clear record of dress, age, and composition within a wartime educational setting. Produced during the period of martial law in Hawaii from 1941 to 1944, when civilian governance was subordinated to military authority, the photograph situates Japanese American youth within a distinct wartime experience that differed from mainland incarceration yet involved significant restriction and oversight. The image supports research into education, race, and wartime policy in the United States, particularly the varied treatment of Japanese American populations across regions. Crack through the center of the photograph; some creasing to sides; minor foxing to margins and light edge wear; overall good condition.

Description
[Philadelphia], 1800. First edition. Removed. Stab holes at inner margin but still a very good+ unopened (uncut) copy.. 8 pp. 8vo. An early extradition case which grew into a firestorm of protest. Thomas Nash, who had participated in a bloody mutiny on a British ship, had escaped the British manhunt for the mutineers, only to be spotted in the United States where he was detained. The British wanted him extradited under the terms of the Jay Treaty. Nash then claimed he was an American citizen by the name of Jonathan Robbins, when in fact he was Irish. Though there were no charges brought against him, he had a habeas corpus hearing and was extradited by Judge Thomas Bee with the tacit approval of President John Adams. The British executed him and the Jeffersonians, fueled by anti-British sentiments, kept his case alive, where it was then taken up in Congress. Many of these same legal issues have surfaced again since 2001. Evans 38782.
