Description
Frankfurt, 1591. No Binding. Near Fine. 14 1/2 x 17 5/8 inches. Slight offsetting, else excellent condition. Fine example of this cornerstone map of Florida and the Southeast, with a bold impression and good margins. It "was the chief basis for maps of the European cartographers for over a hundred years" (Cumming, et al). It is also one of the most finely engraved of all early maps, and the well-inked impression of this example heightens the beauty of its intricate engraving. What makes this map particularly exciting, and also unusual for a work of this period, is that it was largely based on actual observation or, at the least, on first-hand sources. The cartographer, Jacques Le Moyne, was an artist who accompanied a short-lived French colonial enterprise in the southeast. Settlements were established on Parris Island in South Carolina in 1562 and at the head of St. John's River in northern Florida in 1564. From these bases, explorations were conducted and recorded by Le Moyne. Thus it can be said that on this map is some of the earliest mapping of the Georgia and South Carolina coastline based on direct observation. The interior areas of the map were on the other hand based on Indian reports and rumor. Ironically, it was many of these details that were longest lived on subsequent maps. Especially conspicuous on later maps is the lake in the north-center with the falls emptying into it. Below it is an enticing note, which reads in translation: "In this lake the natives find grains of silver." Likewise, the mountains above it are said to contain gold, silver and copper. Above this is a small portion of what appears to be a very large body of water, which most likely represents the Pacific Ocean as derived from Verrazano. The explorer believed that the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans were separated by a narrow isthmus in the area of present-day North Carolina. After the French colonies were wiped out by the Spanish, Le Moyne made his way to London with his drawings; these included several of Indian life in addition to the one that served as the model for this map. In 1588, the German engraver and publisher, Theodore De Bry, purchased the drawings from Le Moyne's widow and produced engravings of them for inclusion in a series of works on the Americas called the Grands voyages. In so doing, De Bry rescued for posterity some of the earliest depictions we have of the Southeast and its inhabitants. Only a single one of Le Moyne's original drawings survives; it is in the collection of the New York Public Library. Richly colored, it is of astonishing beauty. Burden 79; Cumming, Skelton, Quinn The Discovery of North America, caption for no. 198, p. 174, illus. p. 175; Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps pp. 13-18, no. 14; Schwartz/Ehrenberg, Mapping of America, p. 82.

Sanctuary Books (United States)
Description
Folio, 20 x 12½ inches, contemporary half calf, worn with boards detached. The first 24 leaves of this truly remarkable (and quite large) object are used as a circa 1820s scrapbook. This is followed by approximately 100 complete issues of the Gazette of the United States, plus some partial issues, with moderate wear. Philadelphia and environs, 1802-circa 1824. The compliler of this scrapbook was possibly a descendant of Lynford Lardner (1715-1774), a close associate of the Penn's who had an estate at Tacony near Philadelphia. Much of the original art is by women. As nearly as can be assumed, the artists featured include his daughter Hannah Lardner (1756-1839), and granddaughter Elizabeth Lardner (1791-1877), whose mother was from the Saltar family. The original art includes: a watercolor of a rose by Elizabeth Saltar Lardner of Tacony; an ink and wash landscape by Miss Hannah Lardner of Tacony; two ink and wash views by Frances "Fanny" Saltar (1790-1880?) titled "Cootstown from the East" (of Kutztown, PA) and "A View Down the Lehigh River from Bethlehem Bridge". There are two watercolors of flowers by Frances Saltar of Tacony, trimmed and laid in rather than mounted; an unsigned watercolor still life of shells; an unsigned pencil sketch of a ruined building; an unsigned pencil sketch of a residence; and a watercolor of flowers in an urn signed "S. Courlander." Also included are 20 silhouettes in a uniform format, 5 x 4 inches, all but three of them laid down on dark paper. Some bear faint embossed stamps reading "Museum," which helps identify them as products of Peale's Museum, run by the noted artist Charles Willson Peale. A formerly enslaved man named Moses Williams, who had been owned by the Peale family, secured his freedom in 1802 and then produced thousands of silhouettes for Peale's Museum at 8 cents each. His remarkable story has only recently received attention. These works are not signed, and Peale may have employed other silhouettists in addition to Williams, but many, or all, of these portraits were likely by Williams. Three are captioned in manuscript: Mary F. Smith, "Lardner," and "Country Cousin." Additional ephemera mounted in the scrapbook includes an 1824 engraved invitation to the Lafayette Ball; a set of French allegorical prints of the four seasons; 8 large hand-colored botanical engravings; and an engraved portrait of Lafayette by Longacre. Most of the volume was actually never used as a scrapbook. The Philadelphia newspaper, Gazette of the United States, 16 February to 30 June 1802, is bound as fairly close to a complete run of approximately 100 issues, but 5 issues are missing, and 7 are incomplete. The 8 March issue has two black-bordered pages to mourn the death of Federalism at the hands of Thomas Jefferson. More traditionally, the black-bordered 26 May issue mourns the death of Martha Washington.

Description
Northern California, 1880. 4to, one album in burgundy cloth, the other oblong brown pebbled cloth. Seventy-one sepia-toned and cyanotype photographs, most measuring 6 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Near fine with some light wear to albums, photographs very good or better with very good contrast, some showing a hint of fading. A very early pair of vernacular photograph albums, centering on the experiences of a wealthy family in San Francisco, Monterey, and the surrounding areas in the late 1880s. The bulk of the images show the family and their unidentified circle in domestic scenes, with the vernacular architecture and landscapes of the Bay Area on full display. Other images show landmarks including Golden Gate Park, the Francis Scott Key monument, various views of the first Hotel del Monte in Monterey, which would burn in 1887, dating the photographs to the period prior to the fire. The album also includes photographs of African American families. The image quality is generally quite strong, and the photographer was either a professional assembling the album, which includes many portraits of family and presumed friends, for themselves, or the work of a highly skilled amateur. The Initials on the front pastedown are “M.J.R.,” though this could be a later owner. The albums were from the estate of the muralist Clara Fargo Thomas, who was a resident of New York, and could possibly have been from one of her family members, though we are unable to glean much detail from the contents. The few annotations offer little clues, one just reading “5/11/89 - Golden Gate Park,” and another identifying a house as 509 Webster St. in San Francisco, though the typical Victorian architecture and sloped street of the house suggest it could have just been a photograph of San Francisco’s unique architecture. The photographs of the people give insight into the lives of the new wealthy class of San Francisco residents of the late 19th century, with others, interestingly showing rural scenes and people. The photographer also had an eye for the flora of the region, which is displayed throughout. It is unclear what the relationship of the African-American subjects was to the photographer, and why they appear in the album. Overall a compelling group of images, and the earliest example of vernacular photograph albums of California images we can find in the trade.

Description
Oakland, California, 1986. 18 x 25 inch poster on heavy cardstock. Fine.. Poster for Run-DMC’S Raising Hell Tour featuring Whodini, LL Cool J, and R&B group Timex Social Club. Run-DMC were touring on their third studio album, Raising Hell, which went triple platinum. Later tour dates, including New York City, Pittsburgh, and Long Beach, were disrupted by alleged gang violence, causing Run-DMC to cancel at least one date. Nonetheless, the album and tour are variously credited with kicking off the so-called golden age of hip-hop and cementing the genre in popular culture, making the careers of LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys (who did not play at this particular date), and reviving the career of Aerosmith.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1883. Revised edition (1st 1875). 1875 T H HUXLEY'S LABORATORY GUIDE TO BIOLOGY (NEWLY COMBINED BOTANY AND ZOOLOGY). 7 inches tall hardcover, red cloth binding, blindstamped publisher's seal to front cover, gilt title to spine, black endpapers, i-xi, 279 pp, 72-page publisher's catalogue. Spine faded, otherwise unmarked and very good in custom archival mylar cover. From Preface: "Very soon after I began to teach Natural History, or what we now call Biology, at the Royal School of Mines, some twenty years ago, I arrived at the conviction that the study of living bodies is really one discipline, which is divided into Zoology and Botany simply as a matter of convenience; and that the scientific Zoologist should no more be ignorant of the fundamental phenomena of vegetable life, than the scientific Botanist of those of animal existence. Moreover, it was obvious that the road to a sound and thorough knowledge of Zoology and Botany lay through Morphology and Physiology; and that, as in the case of all other physical sciences, so in these, sound and thorough knowledge was only to be obtained by practical work in he laboratory." THOMAS HENRY HUXLEY (1825 – 1895) was an English biologist and anthropologist who specialized in comparative anatomy. He has become known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley had little formal schooling and was virtually self-taught. He became perhaps the finest comparative anatomist of the later 19th century. He worked on invertebrates, clarifying relationships between groups previously little understood. Later, he worked on vertebrates, especially on the relationship between apes and humans. After comparing Archaeopteryx with Compsognathus, he concluded that birds evolved from small carnivorous dinosaurs, a belief still widely held today. The thirty-one years during which Huxley occupied the chair of natural history at the Royal School of Mines included work on vertebrate paleontology and on many projects to advance the place of science in British life. When Huxley himself was young there were virtually no degrees in British universities in the biological sciences and few courses. Most biologists of his day either were self-taught or took medical degrees. When he retired there were established chairs in biological disciplines in most universities, and a broad consensus on the curricula to be followed. Huxley was the single most influential person in this transformation. Huxley was also a major influence in the direction taken by British schools: in November 1870, he was elected to the London School Board in its first elections.
