Berry, New Hampshire; Frederick Holbrook, Vermont; John A. Andrew, Massachusetts; William Sprague, Rhode-Island; and Wm. A. Buckingham, Connecticut. Two short closed tears at blank top margin [repaired on verso]. Light foxing to the blank portions, but the portraits are unmarked. Very Good. First American edition. 8vo; 333, [1]pp; green pictorial cloth over board, gilt-stamped lettering, illustration of a man with a gun carrying a bird over his shoulder on the front; gilt-lettering and vignette of a camera on a tripod on the spine; top edge gilt; pale green eps, inscription "Christmas 1909" on ffep; photographic illustrated fp + 94 plates with 124 illustrations; lightly scuffed edges, some foxing; bright boards; very good plus. This book was first published in London in 1908. The author, Reginald Badham Lodge (1853-1937), an ornithologist and painter, recalls trips through Europe hunting birds with both the camera and the gun. His narrative includes detailed observations of the natural world and the countries he visited. He was the recipient of the first medal ever presented for nature photography from the Royal Photographic Societyl Many of his photographs are housed at the National Trust Collection in the UK.

Moscow: Detskaia Literatura, 1970. Hardcover. Forth edition; 6 x 8; pp. [2], 3-239, [1]; vloth-backed pictorial boards; some rubbing to corners; mild uniform age-toning to pages; very good or better. Aleksandr Radishchev (1749-1802) was a Russian social critic and author who was said to have brought radicalism to Russian literature. The first edition of his current book, describing the socio-economic conditions in Russia and criticizing serfdom, was published in 1790 and immediately condemned by Catherine the Great. The Queen ordered the entire printing to be confiscated and destroyed and of the 650 copies 17 survived (they were smuggled to England and reprinted in 1840). For daring to write it, the author was sentenced to death. The sentence was later reversed to exile in Siberia after Radishchev begged forgiveness of Catherine the Great and publicly disowning his book. A second edition was not published until 1905.
