Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1994. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. Thiebaud, Wayne. Folio size (13 3/4" by 10 1/4"), 356 pages plus 18 unnumbered pages for the prints (374 pages total). The text is Neo Didot, in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris. The display type is Bodoni Bold, handset in foundry type. The drawings were printed by letterpress from photopolymer plates. The paper is French mould-made Lana Royale; a heavier weight of the same paper is used for the lithographs. The binding, done in-house, is hand-sewn, in full blue-gray cloth, with black titling on the front and spine, and a drawing by Thiebaud across the bottom. The slipcase is covered in the same cloth with titling and a vignette on the spine. The color prints, binding cloth, and slipcase were printed lithographically. Edition of 200 copies, plus 26 lettered copies hors de commerce, signed by the artist. M.F.K. Fisher (1908-1992) contributed an introduction to the second Arion Press book, "A Commonplace Book of Cookery", in 1975, but died before we were able to pay tribute to her by publishing her first major literary work, a translation of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin's (1755-1826) famous gastronomic essays. This book, originally made for hire in 1948 for the Limited Editions Club, formed her as an author on subjects relating to food, wine, dining, and living well in the largest sense. She became a good friend of the Press, extending invitations to "the crew" to come to her home in St. Helena for a hike and a swim, followed by lunch, where the conversation was always lively, but never about food. The artist Wayne Thiebaud delivered to Hoyem a large pile of original ink drawings and told him to use what he wanted. Hoyem made photocopies of the drawings and sorted and combined them as he saw fit and Thiebaud immediately approved the selection. He also made the nine lithographs in color, and drew a design for the cover of the binding that showed the skills he learned as a commercial graphic artist. A trade edition was published by Counterpoint in 1996. Note that while this copy is marked as a "Display" copy, we do not believe it was actually used as such as both the book and slipcase are in fine condition. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
London: Hurst and Blackett, 1863. First edition. Near Fine. Three octavo volumes (7 3/4 x 4 7/8 inches; 199 x 125 mm.). viii, 325, [1]; vi, 335, [1]; vi, 398. A few leaves in gathering N in Volume I poorly opened at top and a few leaves in gathering H in Volume III poorly opened at edge (not affecting any text). The front cover of Volume I shows evidence of a lending library label having once been affixed, and the front and rear pastedowns of Volume III show signs of there once having been a brown paper protective cover. Bound in original brick red pebble-grain cloth with covers ruled in blind and spines ruled in gilt and blind and lettered in gilt. Spine of volume three a bit rolled. Triple-decker novels were affordable only to circulating libraries from which they were then rented out fortnightly. First edition of the author's first published novel. MacDonald had previously tried to publish his poetry and fantasy pieces to little success. Encouraged to try his hand at fiction, one of the results was David Elginbrod. MacDonald struggled at first to get it published, and only after a family friend showed the manuscript to the author Dinah Maria Mulock Craik who encouraged her publishers to consider the text did he have success (Shaberman). Despite this initial difficulty, David Elginbrod made him a household name. The lengthy realist novel was "[p]artially set in MacDonald's homeland of northern Scotland, the story of Hugh Sutherland and Margaret Elginbrod is replete with the dialect and thorough "Scottishness" that became MacDonald's trademark. The story takes the characters into the eerie world of the occult and spiritualism that so fascinated Victorian readers" (Wentz). Many of the characters in the book were inspired by MacDonald's own family and acquaintances. Shaberman, George MacDonald: A Bibliographical Study, 14. Not in Sadleir or Wolff. Near Fine.

Description
iv+380 pages with illustrations, diagrams, tables, and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") bound in quarter black leather with gilt lettering to spine over blue marbled boards. From the library of Dino Ruggieri. Volume III (3). (Betts: 7-25). First edition. The Chess Monthly of Great Britain was one of the first to give properly annotated games. The principal editor, Leopold Hoffer, was helped enormously by having Johannes Hermann Zukertort as co-editor until his death in 1888. There were four regular sections: news, annotated games, problems and endgames. In addition, Hoffer carried on a profoundly bitter feud with his one-time benefactor, Wilhelm Steinitz. This publication should not be confused with The Chess Monthly published in the United States which was short lived from 1857-1862 and edited by Fiske and Morphy.Dino Ruggieri was born in, a small city in the Buenos Aires province, October 22, 1921. His parents were both Italians, natives of Porto D'Ascoli. In their early years in Argentina, the Ruggieri's family lived in the country, located about 45 miles from his birth city. The family was engaged in agriculture. When Ruggieri was 8, his father purchased a home in his birth city, where he lived until 2008. In 1938 he was involved in an accident and he was transferred to Buenos Aires for recovery. This was the beginning of his hobby of chess, both as a player over the board and by correspondence, but as well as a major collector of chess materials. After his recovery he became a prominent local chess player and very good representative in postal chess, where he represented Argentina in matches against Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and other countries. He was using the correspondence with his rivals to offer exchanges. Ruggieri was related to Mr Niemeijer and soon began exchanging materials and making important purchases. He also had frequent contacts with Gregorio Lastra, Normando Ivaldi, Gaspar Soria and Carlos De Veyga, all known collectors of chess. He died in 2009 at the age of 88.Condition:Corners bumped, some foxing else a very good copy of a scarce item.
