Description
liv, [2], 618 pp.; 2 p.l., 400 pp. Two vols. in one. Thick 4to, cont. speckled boards, excellently rebacked in antique calf, gilt, reusing the two red morocco lettering pieces on spine. Paris: G.F. de Bure, 1767. A very rare large paper copy of the extremely uncommon auction catalogue of the first of three sales of duplicates from the library of the duc de la Vallière, who formed by the time of his death in 1780 the most important collection of books of the 18th century. La Vallière, born rich and richer still through several inheritances, began buying in a serious way at the sale of the comte d’Hoym in 1738. For more than forty years, he acquired MSS., books, and entire collections on an enormous scale, buying at every major sale in France (and even in London at the Askew sale in 1775). We know that in one single year — 1774 — La Valliêre bought more than 6000 books. Such a pace of acquisition caused the Duc to have many duplicates and triplicates. This catalogue, which contains 5633 lots, contains duplicate books and MSS. (!). We see that La Valliêre was not above selling unique items: lots 5566-5633 are all precious early French MSS. A fine copy, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. ❧ Guigard, II, pp. 294-95. Peignot, p. 128. Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 247 & 341 & no. 347. Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 248-49.

Description
24 pp. 8vo (198 x 125 mm.), modern aubergine cloth, title on upper cover. Paris: Félix & Regnault-Delalande, 1819. A very scarce auction catalogue marking the dissolution of Pierre Blaizot’s inventory; WorldCat records no copy in North America. Despite the lengthy interval between his death and this sale, we can identify the seller as Pierre Blaizot (1740-1808) due to the offerings in the present catalogue — prints, maps, and luxury paper — that match the description of his business on the BnF Data site. Blaizot’s page on the site notes that he was orphaned at age 9, but managed to set up an office in Versailles and a store in Paris in 1775. Suspected of selling illicit books, he spent a week in prison in 1782. His business was the target of investigations during the Revolution, leading him to gradually cede control to the bookseller Nicolas Angé. In the final decade of his life, he trained his son-in-law Antoine Hippolyte Etienne (1776-1840) as a bookseller and assisted in the establishment of Etienne’s bookshop. 227 lots, including prints by B. & J. Audran, Balechou, Bartolozzi, Bloemaert, Callot, Desnoyers, Flippart, Ingouf, Morghen, Poilly, Porporati, Rembrandt, Strange, Thouvenin, Wille, etc.; the celebrated books of Le Clerc, du Cerceau, Vitruvius, Blondel, Dupuis, R. & J. Adam, etc.; maps (lots 185-208); engraved plates, and drawings. Lot 148 is a massive group of Le Clerc’s work numbering 3432 pieces which was part of the comte Rigal sale (1817). A very nice copy. In the characteristic binding of the Bibliothèque Heim, with the library’s stamp on the verso of title. ❧ Lugt 9564.

Burrows studies showed that alterations in the cerebral circulation might be related to apoplexy. Burrows pursued the difficulties of identifying and examining circulation in the brain. Burrows correctly postulated that the cerebrospinal fluid was an important element in the contents of the cranium and that it must be in constant relation to the quantity of blood. Burrows book is one of the few original works on the subject prior to the twentieth century. Garrison/McHenry - '... milestone in the study of cerebral vascular physiology.'

A Fine copy bound in green cloth boards, with embossed design of acrobats on front board and right marbled endpapers. Interior as new. One of Welty's first short stories written around 1935 (although not seen in print until its 1977 publication in Delta magazine), which gives readers insight into the writer's creative and professional development. Welt herself admits in her introduction that she actually knew very little about the subject of acrobats, but was driven to capture the spell of traveling performers, and in retrospect sees the family story as a central theme carried throughout her career. Description
[Andoversford, Gloucestershire: Printed and Published by The Whittington Press, 1990] One of 530 copies, of which 460 copies were bound as this one. Quarter reddish brown linen buckram spine over patterned boards with gilt spine. Folio. Illustrated with numerous wood-engravings, sketches, and three tipped-in full-color plates. Wood engravings by Howard Phipps, Robert Gibbings, Olive Kennedy, and others. Printed on Zerkall mould-made paper. A fine, bright copy in a slightly soiled, near fine board slipcase. John Randle, in his introduction, writes, "Unlike most other type books, this one is intended to be enjoyed for its content as much for its typographical displays, on the principle that the subtleties of the various faces are best discovered by reading and coming to appreciate them almost unconsciously…"…this book's purpose is to…celebrate that typographical renaissance…by showing the Monotype faces held at the Whittington Press. The choice of faces, while fairly comprehensive, is inevitably also subjective, and rather than show a little of every size of every face…the plan has been to show…whole or half pages [that] show off [Stanley] Morison's legacy in its true glory.

Advertising Booklet for Mr. Sinatra’s appearance in the Circus Maximus at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas; 4 pages + front and back cover; gilt stamped red felt; very good; ca. 1970. 3 separate pieces. Sinatra (1915-1998), born December 12, 1915, Hoboken, New Jersey; died May 14, 1998, Los Angeles, California; American singer and leading screen actor; the "teensation" of the early 1940's; film career from 1941; growing up poor on the streets of Hoboken, New Jersey, made him all the more determined to work hard and make something of his life. Starting out as a saloon singer in musty, little dives, he eventually got work as a band singer, first with Harry James, then Tommy Dorsey. In 1942, he started his solo career, instantly finding fame as the king of the “bobbysoxers” the young women and girls who were his fans. About that time his film career was also starting in earnest. Never formally trained, he was an instinctive actor who was best at playing parts that mirrored his own personality. After a vocal cord hemorrhage all but ended his career, he fought back and won the coveted role of Maggio in “From Here To Eternity” 1953. He won an Oscar for the part and his career was assured from then on. He was to continue to give strong and memorable performances in such films as “The Man with the Golden Arm” 1955, and, especially, “The Manchurian Candidate” 1962 which was probably his best film. Member (leader) of the “Rat Pack” with other members Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop. All appeared in “Ocean’s Eleven” 1960 and “Sergeants 3” 1962 and many live appearances at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas.. F. Soft cover.

Signed by the author on the title page. Illustrated guide to the Mormon Battalion/Butterfield Trail through southern Arizona. There are few major events in the history of the Far West from 1846 to 1849 that did not involve the Mormon Battalion. Recruits for the Mexican War from migrating Mormons in Iowa, the Battalion helped make that migration to Utah possible, opened four major western trails to wagons (including principal overland routes of the forty-niners), showed the importance of the Gadsden Purchase corridor, participated in the United States conquest of California and in the discovery of gold there, escorted John Fremont to his court martial, and carried the news of the gold east to an eager American public.
