Description
Carcassonne: P. Polere, 1798. FIRST EDITION. A lovely copy partially printed on blue-tinged paper, interior with wide margins, occasional browning and spotting due to paper stock. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt I compartments, red moroco label, triple gilt fillets, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. First edition of a rare scientific contribution to the study of aerial flight, as well as of the body movement of humans and other animals. This work, of historic importance following that of Borelli, focuses on the manner by which Barthez' approach to diagnosis of illness and disease works hand in hand with muscular movement by examining the mechanics of standing, walking, jumping, crawling, flying, etc. "The vital force is found in all parts of the body, but cannot work separately for any considerable period in any one of those parts, being transferred speedily by sympathy to all the others. From it originate ‘the muscular and tonic forces, the general and special sensitive forces, animal heat and the sympathies" (Handerson). Barthez (1734-1806), a professor of medicine at Montpellier, was a consulting physician to Napoleon. He is memorable for his introduction of the term "vital principle" (vitalis agens) which was derived from Stahl's theory of the "anima." He added much to the works of Borelli on the mechanism and movement of animals, not only in making known Borelli's errors but also in explaining in a new and more realistic manner the different forms of locomotion. Based upon his approach to diagnosing disease and illness, Barthez is known as the creator of the natural, analytic and empiric method of treatment.

Description
Paris: Chez Briand, 1794 First French translation of this well known Hitory of Wome, which first appeared in 1779. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt flat spines with brown and black morocco labels, edges stained red. Four engraved frontispieces by Philibert Boutrois. Complete with half-titles. Light wear to binding extremities, a little light foxing. A very good, clean set. William Alexander (bap. 1742?, d. 1788?) was a University of Edinburgh-educated medical doctor. The present work, which has sociological and anthropological overtones, is his best know. It "deserves to take a place among Enlightenment histories of civil society. Though Alexander clearly knew and was influenced by Montesquieu and the encyclopédistes, it was to contemporary Scottish historians such as John Millar, Lord Kames, and Gilbert Stuart that he owed his greatest debts. Like them, he attempted to place the history of women and gender roles firmly within the history of civil society, though he also perpetuated their disagreements and inconsistencies. The History is long, rambling, and inconsistent, and omits any scholarly references. In it, Alexander drew widely and indiscriminately upon biblical history, theological studies, classical and medieval histories, and travel literature to construct narratives of women's employment, marriage, child-rearing patterns, customs and ceremonies, and the status and public power of women. He explored the relative influences of nature, or biology, and education, or environment, in shaping the manners of women; the potential for the moral corruption of nations in the absence of female chastity; the relationship between the progress of 'civilization' and the condition of women; and the distinctive characteristics of both 'northern' and British women. On the whole Alexander was inclined to give little weight to the influence of Christianity in the improvement of the condition of women, and there is an anti-Catholic and anti-clerical tinge to much of his discussion" (D.N.B.). The History of Women went through three British editions in as many years. It was translated into French and German, and two American editions were produced.

Description
Havana: September 8, 1880. Very good.. Partially-printed broadside, 6.5 x 8.25 inches, completed in manuscript in Spanish and Chinese. Small marginal wormhole, mild edge wear, light toning. Ink stamp of the Consulado General at bottom-center. A scarce certificate issued in 1880 by the Chinese Consulate in Havana, authenticating the registration and details of a Chinese laborer in Cuba. The printed form is completed in manuscript with the name of the recipient, his age, place of origin, occupation, and place of residence. The present examples were completed for a sixty-year-old laborer from Canton being called Pedro Pulido, who was going to work and/or live at 48 Calle Figueroa in Havana. The printed text states that, "El Cónsul General de China en la Habana, certifica que [blank] ha hecho constar en este Consulado General ser súbdito de S.M. el Emperador de la China, y como tal se halla inscrito en el Registro de dicho Consulado General, segun número y filiacion anotados al márgen." The certificate is dated September 8, 1880, and is stamped with the seal of the consulate in red and with the rubberstamped signature of the Consul General Lin Liang Yuan. The form are also bears two ink signatures in Chinese in the left margin, a rare occurrence. An excellent document of the bureaucracy surrounding imported Chinese labor to Cuba in the last quarter of the 19th century.
