Description
[China] Xuande 8 [1433]. Accordion folded Sutra, 10.5 x 29.8 cm., extended length about 15 meters long, [140]p., profuse illustrations, with 94 pages illustrations, balance of text in Chinese, printed on fine mica coated paper.A RARE EXAMPLE . *** **** *** . . MIAO FO LIEN HUA CHING: THE LOTUS SUTRA . . . THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL BUDDHIST SUTRAS . . . DATED XUANDE 8TH YEAR = 1433 . . * A superb and marvelous folded scroll, lavishly illustrated with large, multi-page illustrations. This is the most famous and celebrated illustrated version of ZONG XIANG QUAN YIN JING, [Shi Wu Quan: Complete Chapter 15] i.e.: LOTUS SUTRA HUI XIANG GUAN YIN JING: SUTRA OF THE VISION OF GUAN YIN. Also known as: MIAO FA LIEN HWA KIN KWAN SHI YIN PHU SA PHU MAN PHIN KIN: The Saddharma Pundarika Sutra. The E SO KANNON KYO, or HOKKE-KYO or DAI NICHI KYO in Japanese. . * First known in Chinese as TA-JIH QING [The Great Sun Scripture] then after 725 A.D. known as the Fa-hua Qing [Lotus Sutra] or the ZONG XIANG GUAN YIN JING, and has always been known as the great foundation or Cannon of Buddhism, and is a religious classic of breath-taking grandeur. . *** PRINTING TECHNIQUE, THE PAPER AND MICA COATING: Printed by hand-carved illustrated woodblocks. This folding scroll is lavishly printed on mica-coated fine, superior quality hand-made Japanese mulberry paper. The R A R E technique of using mica coating is seldom used in Japan and is very difficult to accomplish. Mica ore is taken and then finely ground down to fine dust. This dust is then mixed with a "gesso" type substance or "sizing" which is applied to the fine side of the paper in a thin layer and allowed to dry and cure. The paper is then used in the normal way to be dampened and then placed faced-down on the inked blocks and rubbed from the back-side to impress the image of characters and illustrations. The secret is to not dampen to the point where the mica dust comes off in the printing process. Great skill is required to successfully accomplish this technique. Bound in the traditional Chinese sutra format or Jingzhe Zhunag. . *** RESPECT FOR PRINTING OF BUDDHIST SUTRAS: Being a venerated and respected Buddhist Sutra, extra cost was invested into using the best paper and the equally superb printing techniques with mica. This Sutra was printed with the purpose to be placed within the Buddhist Temple as the honored teachings of Buddha. Some great benefactor of the temple donated the cost of executing this Deluxe Sutra in homage to his faith and the Lord Buddha as a gesture of submission to the Buddhist Cannon and doing what was right. After this was printed, it was then folded accordion style into a narrow Sutra format, designed for a priest to hold in one hand, while the pages were turned, reading from right to left. Buddhist monks used this famous Sutra to read to the Sangha, the Buddhist community. The carvers of the blocks, and the printers alike gained Buddhist merit for their contribution to the work. It was also a form of piety to participate in the production process of this Sutra. . *** MATERIALS AND NUMBER OF COPIES PRINTED: The technique employed to print this great work was hand-carved cherry woodblocks, and is beautifully illustrated, an uncommon feature. The large majority of Buddhist Sutras were strictly text characters no illustrations. This fine example is printed with an exceptionally, strong and very clear registry and impression. Obviously this copy was one of the very first "pulls" off the wood blocks as evidenced by the brilliant registry and clarity found in the stunningly clear impression. Wood blocks generally had a maximum average "life-span" of approximately 200 copies before the blocks warped and checked to the point where they were unclear and mostly unusable. Last printings off bad condition blocks are clearly evident by the deterioration of the black or "key" lines or gaps in illustrations between images, and a general over all poor quality of impressions. Based on the exceptionally strong impression of this copy, is firm evidence of an early impression of one copy of about two-hundred total copies produced from these blocks. . *** THE ILLUSTRATIONS: Illustrated Sutras from this early period are RARE and were seldom done. The reason being that most Sutras were read by priests to other priests, but in this instance, this Sutra was illustrated, with the object being that it was not only to be read to other priests, but to be shown to the Sangha or Buddhist community members to give them a clear visual impression of the august gathering of those who came to listen to the Lord Buddha offer his teaching. The correct picture was worth a thousand words. . *** The grand and first illustration occupies some ten full pages in all to make one single and complete impressive view of the a Great Sangha, consisting of a large gathering of Monks, Priests, Arhats, Bodhisattvas and other disciples of the Buddha. The illustrations are separated by the Sutra, which is written in bold face large Chinese characters, easily read by near-sighted old priests. With a plethora of other fine illustrations of the Sangha, a host of Buddhist icons, Bodhisattvas and a variety of deities. These nicely break up the rather sparse text with a substantial and large number of superb illustrations. . The second and most important illustration is that of Avalokitesvara, or Guan-Yin in Chinese; Kannon in Japanese: THE GODDESS OF MERCY. She is shown standing atop a temple, above the seated Buddha, with her multi-faced form, turned in every direction in order to see all things and to save all beings, with her profusion of arms each with hand holding holy Buddhist symbolic objects. Her crown is of a "Hundred Faces" and she stands on a throne of fire. This is the Bodhisattva that grants mercy to those in need. . *** DATE COLOPHON: The last page shows a good colophon date of Xuande 8 [1433] indicating this was printed off the original Chinese woodblocks. . *** FASCINATING EXTRACT: Ours is the complete Fifteenth Chapter, an extract reads: "[part] 15: TATHAGAT' AYUS-PRAMANA: DURATION OF THE LIFE OF THE TATHAGATA and begins with: "I show the place of extinction, I reveal to all beings a device to educate them, albeit I do not become extinct at the time and in this very place continue preaching the law." . Sakyamuni is seen in various poses and displaying Mudras of enlightenment while seated upon his Lotus-bud throne. This is the greatest and Holiest of all Mahayana texts, and is always invoked at Buddhist temples throughout Asia. Although the spoken word of this Sutra varies with each language, the content and concept remains the same: "recitation earns virtue." This marvelous example is one of the longest illustrated Sutras, some 47 ft. or 15.66 meters long] with wonderful holy illustrations of the most important Sutra in all of Buddhism. . *** MEDICAL RELATIONSHIP: LeRoy Davidson in his monumental study of the LOTUS SUTRA IN CHINESE ART, Yale Univ. 1954, points out an item of medical interest in the below Miao Fa on page 91, paragraph 4 where he cites: "The panel is that of the paradise of Bhaisajyaguru, the Buddha of MEDICINE [plate 38.] This paradise is similar to that of Amitayus. As in the Pure Land of Sukhavati, there are no vignettes to identify the scene. Only the MEDICINE BOWL which is held by the Buddha provides the clue, for this is the symbol of Bahaisjyaguru. See footnote 38." Found in cave 8, Dunhuang. The compassionate medical Buddha often dispensed herbal medicine from his bowl to sickly members of the Sangha, the Buddhist community. . *** THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL BUDDHIST SUTRAS: "The LOTUS SUTRA has inspired countless paintings and sculptures which illustrated its teachings...representing a history of Buddhism to the year 1000." Extracted from Davidson dust jacket notes. . Because this is the most important and famous of all Buddhist Sutras, more information can be easily found in books about Buddhism or Buddhist art. Works of this great value were occasionally bestowed upon the most loyal and generous benefactors by temple priests and monks. They are seldom found for sale on the open market. This fine example has been treasured and properly cared for over long life. It does NOT have the usual old worming, mends and damage commonly found in many books of this period. . *** CONDITION: There is a very minor bit of old worming to the indigo blue paper Chitsu cover, a tiny bit of the old worming has penetrated the first [of many] layers of the front and back covers but by Buddha's protection, the full text was spared and is still flawless without a blemish ! The Chuan/Chitsu folding indigo colored case has one of two ivory clips, and a few minor repairs to the inside. . *** OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS: The cover title reads: ZONG XIANG GUAN YIN JING SHI WU QIAN in Chinese: ILLUSTRATED SUTRA OF THE GODDESS OF MERCY, THE LOTUS SUTRA, 15th Chapter complete. Known in Japanese as the JUGO ZEN: E SO KANNON KYO. This Sutra was donated by a pilgrim to the famous thirty-three Temples. A most precious and early example of fine woodblock printing by hand, on elaborate crushed mica-coated paper. Truly a magnificent example of the hand-made art of the ancient book. The complete chapter 15, but some reference sources cite this in Chinese as chapter 24; variant editions total the chapters in different ways. Regardless this one is clearly marked [chapter] fifteen. A beautifully illustrated Lotus Sutra ! . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** ORDERING DETAILS: Payment by wire transfer only, shipping by Federal Express, insured, signature required. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY/REFERENCES: For background and more details see: * A. The Capella, printed at Modena, is the second of only two editions printed in the 15th c. The Herwagen edition of Hyginus features a new series of woodcuts of the constellations, and includes the Greek texts of Aratus and Proclus. I. Capella and Heliocentric Orbits: Although it is an ancient text, Capella's work has a notable place in the history of early modern astronomy. Copernicus praised Capella's model of the solar system, which included heliocentric elements. Although Earth was still at the center in Capella's system, Mercury and Venus circled the Sun. According to Capella, Mercury and Venus rotate around the sun, because these planets diverge no farther than from the sun than is permitted by the curvature of their revolutions. Copernicus argues that Capella’s approach to the so-called lower planets should be applied to all the planets, so, since the sun remains stationary, whatever appears as motion of the sun is really due rather to the motion of the earth. Copernicus wrote: 'I judge that what Martianus Capella and some other Latins took to be the case is by no means to be despised. For they hold that Mercury and Venus do not have any further elongation than the sun than the convexity of their orbital circles; for they do not make a circle around the earth as do others, but have perigree and apogee interchangeable [in the sphere of the fixed stars]… Thus the orbital circle of Mercury will be enclose within the orbital circle of Venus –which would have to be more than twice as large- and will find adequate room for itself within that amplitude.'(De Revolutionibus) “One cannot read Martianus’s book cursorily —one must tackle it— and the reader is immediately at a loss to explain how a book so dull and difficult could have been one of the most popular books of Western Europe for nearly a thousand years. We moderns may be repelled by the style and content of the De nuptiis, but vernacular readers and medieval students seeking an introduction to the learned arts and finding in Martianus’s work a fairly compact treatise dressed in fantasy and allegory were both charmed and edified by it… “The De nuptiis, according H.O. Taylor, was ‘perhaps the most widely used schoolbook of the Middle Ages.’ It would be hard to name a more popular textbook for Latin readers of later ages. It had to withstand keen competition from Boethius, Cassiodorus, and Isidore of Seville, but it had the salient advantage of offering a well-proportioned and comprehensive treatment of all the liberal arts in the compass of one comfortable-sized book. The De nuptiis was the foundation of the medieval trivium and quadrivium. Since it recapitulated the fundamentals of the Roman academic curriculum and transmitted them to later generations of students, the book must be regarded as the key work in the history of education, rhetoric, and science during this period… “It is not surprising that Book VIII of the De nuptiis has been of great interest to historians of science. Their interest has been stimulated by Copernicus, who singles out Martianus to bestow lavish praise upon him for propounding a theory of heliocentric orbits for Venus and Mercury.” (Capella and the Seven Liberal Arts by William Harris Stahl, Richard, and Evan Laurie Burge) The Printer: “An edition of the poems of Tibaldeo dated May 13, 1499 (Hain-Reichling 15452), and the Crastonus of October 20, 1499, and the Capella of May 15, 1500, are all that can be assigned with certainty at Modena to Dionysius Bertochus (from Reggio Emelia), who worked at Reggio in 1496 and 1497 and had returned thither by July, 1501.”(BMC VII, 1067) II. Hyginus, Proclus, Aratus, et alii. The Hyginus of 1535, printed at Basel by Herwagen, is particularly notable for the inclusion of a set of forty-eight fine woodcuts of astronomical figures, newly cut for this edition. The volume includes not only Hyginus' "Poeticon Astronomicon" and his "Fabularum Liber" but also other early astronomical texts. These include Aratus' "Phaenomena", Proclus' "Sphaera" (both of which are printed in the original Greek and are accompanied by Latin translations), and more obscure texts: "De fabulosis narrationibus" by Palaephatus; "Mythologiae" and "De vocum antiquarum interpretatione" by Fulgentius; Phurnutus' "De natura deorum speculatio"; and Albricus' (13th c.) "De Deorum imaginibus Liber". 1. "Under the name of Hyginus two school treatises on mythology are extant: (1) "Fabularum Liber", some 300 mythological legends and celestial genealogies, valuable for the use made by the author of the works of Greek tragedians now lost; (2) "De Astronomia", usually called "Poetica Astronomica", containing an elementary treatise on astronomy and the myths connected with the stars, chiefly based on the work of Eratosthenes. Both are ‘abridgments and both are by the same hand; but the style and Latinity and the elementary mistakes (especially in the rendering of the Greek originals) are held to prove that they cannot have been the work of so distinguished a scholar as C. Julius Hyginus. It is suggested that these treatises are an abridgment (made in the latter half of the 2nd century) of the "Genealogiae" of Hyginus by an unknown grammarian, who added a complete treatise on mythology." (EB) 2. Aratus’ “Phaenomena”: Born in the city of Soli in Cilicia, Aratus studied under the Stoic philosopher Zeno, through whose influence Aratus entered the court of Antigonus II of Macedonia. It was at Antigonus’ request that Aratus composed his long astronomical poem, the “Phaenomena”. The poem, Aratus’ only extant work, is valuable for preserving what is considered to be the first star catalogue, that of Eudoxus of Cnidus (368 B.C.). After the famous prelude, Aratus describes the northern and southern constellations and the circle of the celestial sphere. Next, he deals with the calendar and the hours of the rising and setting stars. Then follows a discussion of the days of the lunar month, followed by the seasons, and then the Metonic cycle. The second part deals with meteorology -an integral part of the main text, even though ancient commentators give it a separate title. After a transition, Aratus deals with the signs derived from the observation of the sun, stars, and other celestial phenomena. He ends with a description of the signs that depend on terrestrial phenomena. Individual stars are differentiated by their brilliance. Aratus’ work was enormously popular, inspiring a whole sub-genre of translations and imitations, the three most important of which are included in this volume. By firmly establishing the figures associated with the constellations, the work had an important influence on sixteenth and seventeenth-century celestial cartographers, such as Johann Bayer. 3. Proclus’ “Sphaera”: This work, transmitted under the name of Proclus, is considered to be largely the work of the stoic philosopher Geminus of Rhodes (fl. ca. 10 A.D.), a student or later follower of Posidonius. Drawing on the work of earlier astronomers such as Hipparchus, the “Sphaera” begins with an explanation of the astrological aspects of astronomical signs and their influence on human affairs. Next come chapters on the constellations, the circles of the celestial sphere, and a discussion of the variations of the length of day and night at different latitudes. Chapter 7 -based largely on Hipparchus and his commentary on Aratus- deals with the rising of the zodiacal signs and the length of the lunar month, with explanations of the phases of the moon, lunar eclipses, and the general motion of the planets. This is followed by discussions of the rising and setting of the fixed stars, the zones of the terrestrial globe, and the principles upon which “parapegmata” (astronomical calendars containing weather prognostications that contain the rising and setting of certain stars and constellations) are based. There is also a chapter dealing with the deals with the “exeligmus”, or shortest period containing a whole number of synodic months, of anomalistic months, and of days, also treated in the Almagest (IV, 2). In addition to the Greek text, this edition also includes the Latin translation by the English humanist scholar Thomas Linacre. Linacre traveled to Italy in 1487 to study with the Greek scholar Demetrius Chalcondyles and the Italian humanist Angelo Poliziano. From 1497 to 1499 Linacre assisted Aldus in printing the “editio princeps” of the Greek text of Aristotle. His work on the Aldine Aristotle and his translation of the “Sphaera” are the most important contributions to the revival of Greek learning by an Englishman in the fifteenth-century.

Description
Edinburgh: John Grant, 1924. Thornton Edition. Twelve octavo volumes (8 1/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 205 x 140 mm.) occupying approximately 17 1/2 inches (44 1/2 cm.) of shelf space. Handsomely bound ca. 1960 by [Rivière] for Henry Sotheran in three-quarter red calf over red cloth boards ruled in blind. Spines decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, two blue and green morocco lettering labels, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Frontispieces and plates. Half-titles and title-pages printed in red and black. Seven of the green spine labels are faded, otherwise near fine. The Thornton Edition was first published in 1905, named for the village on the outskirts of Bradford, West Yorkshire best known as being the birthplace of the Brontës. The moorlands of that area "had a profound influence on the writing of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte...at their home the children created a rich imaginary world. Any books that came their way were eagerly devoured, and they produced their own books as well" (Bronte Society). As the sisters rose to adulthood, their novels began to focus on the complex emotional lives of women from all walks of life -- from orphans to governesses to heiresses -- but with the greatest emphasis on those whose educations and livelihoods most reflected their own. With clear-sightedness, they used their knowledge of gendered, economic, and social constraints to develop their best material. Again, the moorlands of their upbringing affected their writing. Anne's work was like a still day before a storm. And "if Charlotte's novels keep up a stiff wind, Emily's one novel is a thunderstorm. Their characters...have such a gust of life that they transcend reality" (Dean). Publishing under gender neutral pseudonyms of Currer Bell, Ellis Bell, and Acton Bell, the three talented authors were able to release their works to the public without the kind of criticism that fell on women of the time. It was with the publication of Anne's second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, that the women were forced to reveal their true identities when an unscrupulous publisher attempted to use Currer Bell's name to sell another, less successful author's works. The literary fame that came with the Brontes' revelation led only to a shortlived happiness, as all three died at early ages" (Bronte Society).

Description
New York: Harmony Books, 1982. Near fine in near fine jacket.. Inscribed association first US edition of the first, but not the last, conclusion to the five-book Hitchhiker's trilogy, presented by Adams at Toronto's International Festival of Authors at Harbourfront to Greg Gatenby, the Festival's founding artistic director. The plot of the third Hitchhiker's book was once intended for a multi-part Doctor Who arc (rejected); though it was later subjected to a radio adaptation, it was never produced as part of the original Hitchhiker's TV series, and its bleak pessimism has a peculiar charm. The US edition famously replaced certain four-letter expletives with euphemisms, presumably out of some misguided idea of cultural consideration, even as any number of jokes concerning the rules of cricket were left intact. This copy was one of the many signed and inscribed books amassed by Gatenby during his two-decade tenure as festival director, representing "the growth of a literary culture in the city of Toronto over many years" (Caldwell). 7'' x 4.75''. Original black cloth stamped in metallic green. Purple endpapers. In original unclipped ($9.95) pictorial dust jacket by Peter Cross. 227, [1] pages. Inscribed by Adams "to Greg" [Gatenby] on title page. Gatenby's ownership signature to front free endpaper. Two small indentations to top edge of front board. Minor edgewear to jacket, with single tape repair to verso. Bright.

Description
Three Volumes, quarto, Manuscript Letter Copy Books containing 1525 pp., with approximately 1500 business letters of four different cashiers for the Ilion Bank, of Ilion, Herkimer County, New York, dated between 1 April 1853 and 7 September 1859. The Ilion Bank, had as its president the arms manufacturer, Eliphalet Remington, who was the bank's president from the time of its founding in 1852 to his death in 1861. The letters, in the present volumes, were written by four different cashiers of the bank: Robert H. Pomeroy (1853), John A. Rasbach (1856), H. H. Devendorf (1856 and 1859), and Floyd C. Shepard (1859). The letter copy books contain the day to day business correspondence and reflects the activities of the bank, in the letters the cashier writes to various individuals and other banks, about their returning bank notes for collection, or about sending them their own drafts on their bank, and the various business transactions and activities of the bank including mortgages, claims, requesting cash, the printing of paper notes for the bank, etc. The three volumes are as follows: 1853 – 393 pp. of business letters, each generally one page in length, dated 1 April 1853 to 4 November 1853, bound in quarter leather (suede), cloth covered boards, index in front, but not used, spine, tips, corners, and edges worn, paper label on front board, text good, written in legible hand, some letters faded, but most are easily readable. 1856 – 744 pp. of business letters, each generally one page, dated 12 February 1856 to 1 December 1856, bound in quarter leather (suede), cloth covered boards, index in front, but not used, spine, tips, corners, and edges worn, text good, text block almost detached from binding, paper label on front board, written in legible hand, some letters faded, but most clearly readable. 1859 – 388 pp. business letters, generally one page letters, dated 5 February 1859 to 7 September 1859, bound in quarter leather (suede), cloth covered boards, paper label on front board, 16 pp. index at rear, spine, tips, corners and edges worn, text good, written in legible hand, some letters faded, but mostly readable. Ilion Bank (1852-1866) In 1852 the Ilion Bank began operations under New York State banking laws, with a capital of $100,000. The first directors were arms manufacturer Eliphalet Remington, Benjamin Carver, Benjamin P. Markham, John P. Sill, George Tuckerman, Vose Palmer, John Ingersoll, Alonzo Wood, Henry L. Green, Peter H. Warren, and attorney John A. Rasbach. Eliphalet Remington (1793-1861) was elected the Ilion Bank's first president. Remington is known for the arms manufactory that he founded. He designed the Remington rifle and founded what is now known as the Remington Arms Co., L.L.C. The company was known originally known as E. Remington followed by E. Remington & Son and then finally E. Remington and Sons. Remington was the first president of the Ilion Bank in 1852 and remained president until he died in 1861, succeeded by George Tuckerman. John Ingersoll was the bank's first vice-president; Robert H. Pomeroy was the bank's first cashier. The successive cashiers after Pomeroy were Frank Carver, Le Roy Tuttle, John A. Rasbach, H. H. Devendorf, and Floyd C. Shepard. The bank suspended business in 1866, paying all of its liabilities in full. The cashiers who wrote the letters in this collection are John H. Pomeroy (1856), John A. Rasbach (1856), H. H. Devendorf (1856 and 1859), and Floyd C. Shephard (1859). Robert H. Pomeroy was the first cashier of the Ilion Bank. He was also involved in organizing the Mohawk Gaslight Company, which was organized October 3, 1860, and acted as treasurer for the company. At a later date the company was consolidated with the works at Ilion, a new company formed called the Ilion and Mohawk Gaslight Company. After the consolidation the works were located about half a mile east of Ilion and both villages were supplied with gas. Pomeroy committed suicide in 1867 by taking poison. At the time he had recently left the Mohawk Valley National Bank as its cashier. A heavy defalcation had been discovered, but a letter left by Pomeroy stated he was innocent and that the bank had been robbed since he left it. After Pomeroy left Ilion Bank, he was replaced by Frank Carver as cashier, and after Carver left, Le Roy Tuttle (1821-1894) took over as cashier. He was born in Columbus, New York, and was a banker in Cooperstown. He later removed to Ilion where he became connected with the Ilion Bank as its cashier once Pomeroy left. Tuttle later moved to Nebraska and was one of the founders of the Western Exchange Fire & Marine Insurance Co., and later acted as assistant treasurer of the United States and in 1886 was acting treasurer of the United States. John A. Rasbach replaced Leroy Tuttle as the cashier of the Ilion Bank when Tuttle went west to Nebraska. Rasbach was formerly a prominent attorney of Ilion. He was a great-grandson of a Palatine settler, Johannes Rasbach, who located about a mile east of Fort Dayton in 1726. John A. Rasbach was born May 9, 1805; worked on a farm, taught school, and was a merchant in Herkimer, and was also postmaster and justice of the peace for about twelve years. During this time, he read law and was admitted to the Bar in 1841. In 1852 he bought a farm near Ilion and moved there, where he became an active factor in the progress of that section, particularly in railroad operations. He died at his home in Ilion. H. H. Devendorf replaced Rasbach in November 1857 as cashier of Ilion Bank. He was treasurer of the Syracuse Mutual Gymnasium when it was organized in 1852. He was previously cashier of the Chittenango Bank of Chittenango, New York. Floyd C. Shepard, of German Flats, was a native of Otsego County, born September 21, 1824. After clerking and being engaged in mercantile business for some years he came to Ilion as teller of the Ilion Bank and was subsequently made cashier in February 1859, replacing Devendorf, which position he held until 1866 when the bank closed. He was county treasurer one term, from 1863 to 1866. He was with the Remington's as a financial manager for twenty years After the Ilion Bank closed in 1867, the Ilion National Bank and Trust Company was organized the same year. Floyd C. Shepard, who was the cashier of Ilion Bank at the time it closed, became a cashier at Ilion National Bank.

On the chickenox, 427-36. [no.3] Baker, Sir George (1722-1809). An Inquiry concerning the cause of the endemial colic of Davenshire, 175-256. Whole volume, xv, 474pp. 130x220mm. Library bookstamp and stamp of Arthur Jacob Bequest (1871) on the title-page. Disbound. Second edition. [no.1] A classic description of nyctalopia. Report of a single case. Garrison-Morton.com No. 5831. [no.2] In a paper read before the (Royal) College of Physicians on 11 August 1767, Heberden first definitely differentiated chickenpox from smallpox. Garrison-Morton.com No. 5438. [no.3] Baker demonstrated that the cider of Devonshire contained lead, while that made in other parts of England did not. He further showed that it was common practice in Devon to line cider presses with lead, and proved that lead poisoning was the cause of Devonshire colic. He was responsible for the abandonments of lead in the making of cider presses, and thus for the disappearance of the colic. (See also Garrison-Morton.com No. 2096, An essay concerning the cause of the endimial colic of Devonshire. London: J. Hughes, 1767.).
