First edition; 5 x 7 3/4; pp. 61; illustrated brick-red wraps; small rubbed spots to spine; illustrated with photographs; very good to near fine. In late 1941 and early 1942, with the German army invading Russia and the US entering the Second World War, a huge all-Slavic convention gathered in Detroit on April 25 to 28, 1942. Thus, the American Slav Congress was founded with the purpose of operating as an ally and a pressure group on behalf of the Soviet Union within the US. Both the Russian Head of State Mikhail Kalinin and President Roosevelt approved of the organization. Bulgarian-American George Pirinsky, the author of the current book, was ASC's Secretary General and, arguably, the most active member of the movement. By the end of 1948, the relations between Bulgaria and Russia and the US had become quite strained and in May of 1949 the Committee on Un-American Activities of the House of Representatives branded the ASC "a Moscow-inspired and directed federation of Communist-dominated organizations." Pirinsky was arrested and, eventually, deported to Bulgaria in 1951.
