Description: 14 sheets, ranging from 2000 x 377 mm. to 670 x 385 mm. (the 12 drawings) to 567 x 380 mm. (the furnace), plus the wrapper. All on fine thin paper. [Japan: ca. 1855-63]. With the first demonstration of steam power in Japan, thanks to Commodore Perry’s visit in July of 1853, the feudal domains immediately began to organize the construction of a fleet of large Western-style warships. By the August 1853 arrival in Nagasaki of the Russian Admiral Yevfimy Putyatin, who gave a demonstration of a steam engine on his ship, the Palladia. Hisashige Tanaka (1799-1881), the founder of the future Toshiba Corporation and the “Thomas Edison of Japan,” promptly copied these models and built Japan’s first steam engine. The first steam-powered warship to enter the Japanese navy was the Kanko Maru, given by the Dutch government in 1855. Western naval technologies were quickly assimilated; the earliest Japanese steam-powered warships were based on Dutch shipbuilding manuals and with direct assistance from Dutch representatives. In 1863, Japan completed is first domestically built steam warship, the Chiyodagata. Following the humiliations at the hands of foreign navies in the Bombardment of Kagoshima in 1863, the shogunate began to rely more on French and British warship technologies. The large drawing of the steam engine and its parts is captioned (in trans.): “The steamship’s measurements: length is ca. 50 meters, width is ca. 11 meters, and depth is ca. 7 meters. Steam engine’s structure and the parts described with measurements.” From right to left, we see about thirty of the parts of the steam engine, often with katakana labels and measurements, the latter written in red ink. On the farthest left of this sheet is a remarkable and fine drawing (770 x 380 mm.) in brush, with wash in various grays, yellow, and pink, of the assembled engine. On the first leaf of the series of 12 numbered sheets of drawings of the naval architecture of the proposed warship, a label pasted-on states (in trans.): “The 12 sheets of illustrations are copies of red-haired origin, of the ship.” These sheets contain hundreds of drawings, many heightened with gray wash and many with specific measurements, of various aspects of the ship’s design, in preparation for construction. Included are numerous depictions of the hull, deck, bulkheads, rudders, winches, and gears from different viewpoints, and of structural and strengthening elements, with many manuscript labels in katakana, of Dutch terms. There is some worming on the sheets, which does touch some drawings and characters, but it is not offensive.

Laid in are approx. 20 octavo manuscript leaves from an unknown American women's diary dated October 1887 - August 1891. A lively account of a voyage around the world, with some interesting details of travel in the United States, Australia, Tasmania, and Hawaii, but primarily covering New Zealand. The author, presumably an American man (as per the style of dating, use of syntax, etc. -- and perhaps living in the England at the time) identified only as JHM, begins the journey from Liverpool bound for Chicago via New York, to spend several days at the Chicago World's Fair. He traveled on the Shaw, Savill & Albion steamer SS Tainui, stopping in Las Palmas (Canary Islands), Cape Town, and Hobart, and arriving in Wellington on January 9, 1894. He spent a month traveling around New Zealand by rail, steamer, and stage coach, and offers detailed commentary on the characteristics of transportation and accommodation (with many individual hotels mentioned), as well as the appearance and commercial activities of the principal towns. Includes a visit to Cable Bay telegraph station, with details on the method of transmission, detecting and repairing damage to the cables, etc. One of the most engaging sections describes a perilous (if beautiful) journey through Buller Gorge, as his party finds themselves at the mercy of a coach driver so reckless as to cause them to "consider the advisability of setting down until a railroad is built through this part of the country". JHM then spends a week in Australia, traveling by rail from Melbourne ("the finest city in the Colonies") to Sydney (where "streets are generally narrow and running in all directions. Steam trains operate over different parts of the city, but they are noisy, dangerous and very objectionable."). He offers a detailed comparison of rail travel (size of track, type of cars, services available etc.) in Australia, England, and the United States. The return journey takes him to Honolulu (arriving 4, March 1894), where he describes the quarantine (smallpox) and customs procedures (searching for guns and opium), and the air of political tension ("the Steam launches from the British and Americans in turn came alongside and a Lt. from each came on board, looked over the ship's papers, took some memos, and withdrew, all this being done with such an air of importance and authority--gave one the idea that surely something was up."). He also offers details on the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the cultivation and preparation of taro root. The final leg of the journey takes JHM through San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Colorado Springs, and Denver, but these are only briefly described.

Together they document the emergence of anti ballistic missile doctrine within U.S. military strategy, tracing the shift from surface to air missile defense against aircraft toward systems intended to intercept nuclear warheads outside the Earth's atmosphere. Archive of eight black and white press and military photographs documenting U.S. Army missile defense systems between 1957 and 1970. Prints measure 10 × 8 inches with detailed typed captions and military press stamps on the versos. Locations include White Sands, New Mexico; Taipei, Taiwan; Tokyo, Japan; and the Pacific Missile Range near Kwajalein Atoll. The archive includes two images of the Nike-Hercules surface to air missile in launching position. One photograph, dated October 20, 1966 and taken by SP5 Harold P. Slate in Taipei, Taiwan, shows a Nike-Hercules unit deployed in the Far East and bears the caption: "Three Nike-Hercules missiles, the first to be based in the Far East, tower toward the sky... 7th Arty Regt. was the first unit to have the missiles ready for firing." The Nike-Hercules, developed as the successor to the earlier Nike-Ajax, was designed to intercept high flying aircraft and had the controversial capability of carrying a nuclear warhead for anti air use. Three photographs document the Spartan interceptor missile system in development and testing. One publicity photograph dated April 4, 1968 shows the long, finned Spartan ABM before a test firing at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Another image includes a diagram explaining the missile's function in "the Army's anti-ballistic missile system" and its role in destroying incoming ICBMs by detonating nuclear warheads in outer space. The accompanying schematic illustrates the process: "Enemy re-entry vehicle detected... radar track... fire Spartan... target destroyed." A third photograph dated September 1, 1970 commemorates the first confirmed success of this system, when a Minuteman missile launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base was intercepted outside the Earth's atmosphere by a Spartan missile launched from Kwajalein Atoll. Two additional photographs highlight the Nike-Zeus interceptor program, a direct predecessor to the Spartan and one of the earliest American anti ICBM defense systems. One dramatic image shows the missile lifting from its "underground launcher and streaking skyward in a successful test," while accompanying press text notes that the test demonstrated Zeus "might be fired from below ground," an important development intended to reduce vulnerability to enemy attack. Another image dated 1963 is described by the Department of Defense as "a first," reportedly the first released photograph showing a Nike missile intercepting an ICBM over the Pacific. Its caption describes the scene: "The thick lower streak is the Titan ICBM booster breaking up... the bright upper streak is an Army Nike booster..." The final photograph captures a 1963 military review in Tokyo where crowds under umbrellas observe a Nike-Ajax missile on parade. The UPI caption reads: "Through a curtain of rain, hundreds of people view a Nike-Ajax missile during a grand military review held to commemorate Tokyo's self-defense Forces day."
