New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1936. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition, in a second state dust jacket with printed arrow from "Machine Esthetic" to "Futurism". 249, [1] pp with 223 monochrome reproductions and errata slip at copyright. Bound in publisher's tan cloth lettered in black and red. Near Fine with slight tanning to cloth, light wear at spine ends, foxing to fore-edge, former owner's name on front free endpaper. In a Very Good unclipped dust jacket with fading and tanning to spine, shallow chips to crown and upper corner of front panel, former owner's name mostly erased on front panel, splitting to front flap joint and rear joint, and closed tearing at edges. The art historian and first appointed MoMA director's collection of essays on the history and development of Cubism and Abstractionism in the early 20th century published in conjunction with the groundbreaking exhibition of the same name held from March 2nd-April 19th, 1936. The acclaimed exhibition of nearly 400 works displayed works ranging from African sculpture, Neo-Impressionists paintings from Seurat, paintings from the dawn of Cubism by Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris, works of Fauvism, Dadaist objects, Bauhaus sculptures and early works of Surrealism. Barr believed that abstraction was an inherent element in the development of modern art and created his now iconic diagram featured on the front cover of the dust jacket. Provenance of Michael Goodman, professor of Architecture at UC Berkeley from 1927 until 1971.

Description
1834. First Edition. (DORR, Thomas Wilson). An Address to the People of Rhode-Island, From the Convention Assembled at Providence, on the 22nd Day of February, and Again on the 12th Day of March, 1834, to Promote the Establishment of a State Constitution. Providence: Cranston & Hammond, 1834. Octavo, period-style half diced calf gilt, marbled boards, pp. (i-v), 6-60. $2400.First edition of Dorr's foundational Address, prompting his role as instigator and leader of the Dorr Rebellion, placing him ""in the front rank of the political reformers of Jacksonian America.”Born into privilege, Rhode Island's Thomas Dorr became ""a political insurrectionary… [who] hastened the demise of the royal charter of 1663 and the adoption of a written constitution"" (Wiecek, Peculiar Conservatism, 242). Following the American Revolution, by the 1820s Rhode Island remained the only state that clung to its colonial charter, which ""restricted suffrage to white men who possessed real estate valued at a minimum of $134"" (Chaput, Proslavery and Antislavey Politics, 662-63). It had ""evolved from the most to the least democratic state"" (Lemons, Rhode Island's Ten Turning Points, 62). ""Dorr's political goals—'free suffrage' with no discrimination against the foreign-born, 'one-man, one-vote,' an independent judiciary, a more powerful and dynamic executive, the secret ballot—though not permanently achieved in Rhode Island during his lifetime, placed him in the front rank of the political reformers of Jacksonian America"" (ANB).In 1834 Dorr ""asked the General Assembly to call a convention to revise the state constitution in favor of taxpayer-militia suffrage and to adopt… 'equal representation'"" (Wiecek, 242). In this major Address, delivered at that convention and ""composed primarily by Dorr"" (Conley, Democracy in Decline, 255), he states: ""No form of a Constitution can be worth much if… in this State the Legislative power is… in the hands of less than one third part of the qualified voters. A few political managers… [rule] the whole State as they please, against the will of two thirds of the freeman and three fourths of the people"" (emphasis in original)."" To Dorr, the state's ""strange adherence to the charter"" left Rhode Island with an ""inequality of representation… too unjust to be much longer tolerated."" In 1841, after Dorr was elected ""the People's governor"" under the state's ""People's Constitution,"" he became the leader of the 1842 Dorr rebellion, which historian Sean Wilentz calls ""'a striking [and] exceptional case in the history of American democratization before the Civil War,' calling it no less than 'a deadly serious test of democracy's meaning and democracy's future.'"" The Dorr Rebellion, increasingly viewed as the ""most significant political and constitutional event between the Age of Jackson and the election of Lincoln…Dorr's constitutional understanding had roots not only in the Revolution and the post-Revolutionary era; it remained a vibrant part of American constitutionalism"" (Chaput, Rhode Island Question, 55-56). Sabin 70537. American Imprints 26527. Text generally fresh with light scattered foxing.

Description
Dublin: Joseph Hill, 1784. First Edition?. Full contemporary calf.. Near fine with some abrasions or shallow gouge to the front cover; front joint partially cracked near the head.. 8vo, [6], [1] - 203, [1 - blank] pp. + 2 engraved plates. Young was educated at Trinity College, Dublin where he taught natural philosophy. he spent years working on a commentary to Newton's Principia. The book offered here is his work elucidating only one of the propositions, i.e., the nature and propagation of sound. He also examined the nature of the vibration in elastic fibers and accounts for some of the observed phenomena of musical strings. The result is a book that is perhaps the best non-mathematical account of the physics of a vibrating body and elasticity in general. An important book. Kassler 1085 - `87; absent from Babson and Wallis.

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1844. Hardcover. Good+. First edition in first state binding, with 1844 date at base of spine. Vol. I: 405 pp, with 2 lithograph plates and folding map (Texas and Part of Mexico and the United States showing the Route of the First Santa Fe Expedition); Vol. 2: 406 pp, with three lithograph plates. Chipping to head of spine on Volume I, both volumes with light foxing, mild spine lean, a few signatures spring, early ownership markings of W.C. and C.C. Bulkley; good or better. The Texan Santa Fe Expedition was a commercial and military expedition to secure the Republic of Texas's claims to parts of Northern New Mexico for Texas in 1841. According to Jenkins (Basic Texas Books, 116), "not only is this the best account of the Santa Fe Expedition, it is one of the best campaign narratives ever written. Rupert Richardson said Kendell's experiences 'represent practically every element of adventure and peril that could have befallen men on the southwestern frontier.'...George W. Kendall founded the New Orleans Picayune in 1837 and became one of the leading trumpeters for Texas. In 1841, learning of Texan plans to conquer Santa Fe, he set out for Texas and joined the expedition. Travelling through a new and hostile environment, and improperly equipped, the expedition nearly starved, surviving on hippophagy. The members straggled almost to Santa Fe and were gulled into surrendering without a fight. The captives were taken to Mexico and imprisoned for nearly two years." Howes K-75; Field 818; Wagner-Camp 110, Rader 2157.

London: John W. Parker, 1850. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Two volumes, viii, 293; viii, 279, in contemporary three-quarter leather and marbled boards, with gilt spine, red and black spine labels. Endpapers and all edges marbled. Leather scuffed, otherwise a very nice set, clean and sound. Bookplate of Arthur Dean on the front pastedown of each volume. Houstoun (1811-1892) was a successful British novelist as well as the author of several travel books and other works of nonfiction. Written as a series of letters, Hesperos recounts her journey from Liverpool to Halifax and from there through New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, DC, westward to Pittsburgh and then to Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, New Orleans, and Texas. "Always opinionated, Houstoun describes American women as ‘free' in their public behaviour, and is particularly interested in the lives of the Irish in America and in the condition of enslaved blacks on the plantations which she visited in Louisiana and Mississippi" (DNB). Her account also offers vivid descriptions of local manners and customs, life of the steamboats, lodging conditions, etc. Eberstadt: "Contains much on Texas, including a residence in Galveston, trip to New Washington, Texas, visit to the prairies, etc." Howes H-692; Sabin 33200; Graff 1976; Hubach p. 111; Clark III: 329; Rader 1950.

Self Published, 2013. Paperback. Very good. Paperback. 9" X 6". iv, 247pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of pictorial paper wraps. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Derek Amato's reflections in My Beautiful Disaster provide rare insight into what people with extraordinary gifts see, think, feel and do; pose questions about the potential to tap into previously undetected abilities and spotlight the 'silent epidemic' of head trauma. His experiences also make vivid some the challenges faced by those living with autism and other neurological disorders and hint at the possibility we all have more in common than we think. Readers enchanted by autistic savant, Daniel Tammet's eloquent Born On A Blue Day, will welcome another multi-layered, first person account of what is to live with a remarkable condition. Uniquely, having spent his life as a "neurotypical" Amato's tale relates the before and after of 'the gift'; his voice at times resonating with incredulity at what has happened and what the eventual cost may be.(Publisher).
