Ordnance Instructions for the Confederate States Navy Relating to the Preparation of Vessels of War for Battle, to the Duties of Officers and Others When at Quarters, to Ordnance and Ordnance Stores, and to Gunnery.; Published by order of the Navy Department
Seller
Bartlebys Books (United States)
Description
London, England: Saunders, Otley & Co.). (Printed by Spottiswoode and Co.), 1864. Third edition (i.e., first and only Confederate edition). 8vo. xix, 171, cix pp. 21 plates (17 lettered A-P, with two each for letters C and D and J not used, each labelled "Diagrams" and 4 numbered plates in the appendix), in-text diagrams and tables. The only Ordnance Manual produced for the Confederate Navy, adapted from a United States manual first published in 1852 and reissued in 1860, printed in Great Britain and imported through the blockade. Inscription on the front endpaper "Naval Commandant's Office, / Marion C.H., S.C. / September 1864." The Marion Courthouse Naval Station was constructed on the banks of the Pee Dee River, about 100 miles from the Atlantic coast in the 1862, moving it away from potential bombardments from the water or coastal invasion; two small torpedo boats and the CSS Pee Dee were built there. The station was one of several inland naval facilities constructed in the Confederacy, the largest being in Charlotte, N.C. (cf, "Our Very Own Naval Yard" by Matthew Robinson, SCNOW online). Nevins I, p. 221: "Treats not only of ordnance subjects, but also gives much information concerning preparation for battle." Not in Broadfoot. Rather widely held by research libraries (OCLC locates 33 copies), but rare in trade, with no copy recorded at auction by either ABPC (1976-2017) or RareBookHub (since a 1921 offering by Anderson Galleries); RareBookHub also records a copy offered by Goodspeed in 1937. We know of one copy obtained privately by a collector in the past decade. Bookplate removed from front pastedown, label removed from rear endpaper, but a good solid copy of a rare book with an outstanding Confederate association. Contemporary half-calf and pebbled brown cloth (base of spine chipped, joints cracked, but repaired and sound, occasional light foxing, bookplate removed from front pastedown, label removed from rear endpaper), gilt spine title, edges sprinkled red. Description
1944. First Edition. Signed. CALDER, Alexander. Three Young Rats and Other Rhymes. Drawings by Alexander Calder. Edited with Introduction by James Johnson Sweeney. New York: Curt Valentin, 1944. Folio, original half tan cloth and pictorial yellow boards, original dust jacket. $4200.Limited first edition, one of only 760 copies, with a wonderful inscription with flourishes that fills almost the entire front free endpaper: ""to Edward L. Fischer, Cordial Greetings from Alexander Calder, Jan. 1945.""Calder's 85 illustrations are as direct, delightful and disturbing as the nursery rhymes they depict. ""Until comparatively recent times, little thought was given these 'trifles of the nursery'… That such trifles lasted any great time is surprising. But it is difficult to exaggerate the extreme tenacity of tradition in little things. Nothing is more remarkable than the way that a phrase or a custom will survive ages after its original significance has been forgotten"" (Introduction). Contemporary exhibition catalogue laid in.Occasional foxing. Sun-toning along edges and spine of fragile dust jacket. A near-fine copy, most desirable inscribed.

Description
2006. TUERLINCKX, Joelle. One Printed Page 2. Contains "the Biggest Surface on Earth Scale 1:1." A computer generated image on paper, diameter 270 mm. Matted in publisher's cardboard portfolio. New York: Library Council of the Museum of Modern Art, 2004. In her films, sculptures, public projects, and extensive publications, the Belgian Conceptual artist Joëlle Tuerlinckx looks at unlikely spaces and substances to pose formal, perceptual, physical and social conundrums. This work was generated from a sample artifact that the artist calls "original momametamaterial"-a sheet of paper covered with a thick layer of powdery gray photocopier toner. Each unique image, signed and dated to the hour, was produced on a series of desktop laser printers over many days. Each reads as a shimmering, minimalist gray abstraction, printed on a circular sheet of paper, or as a gray void, marked by the shifting moiré patterns that in commercial printing may indicate degraded reproduction. Accompanying each piece is a seemingly scientific, highly technical description of the project, written by the artist, with computer-generated diagrams of atomic spheres. The text, sometimes credible, sometimes vaguely preposterous, outlines the complex electrostatic calibrations and other processes by which the artist fabricated "extracts" from a surface that does not exist in nature. One of 200 copies, Print signed on verso by Tuerlinckx and text leaf initialed and dated on each side by her. The print immaculate, slight staining on one corner of the cardboard portfolio.

2003. ISBN-13: 9781584772941; ISBN-10: 1584772948. Beale, Joseph Henry. Bartolus on the Conflict of Laws. Translated into English by Joseph Henry Beale. Originally published: Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1914. 86 pp. Reprinted 2003 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584772941; ISBN-10: 1584772948. Hardcover. New. $39.95 * This is a notably lucid translation of the sections concerning the conflict of laws in Bartolus's Super Primam et Secundam Partem Codicis Commentaria, a commentary on the first two books of Justinian's Code and its glosses that circulated widely in manuscript and was first printed in 1471. Taken together, these sections comprise the first comprehensive statement on the subject. One of the great medieval commentators, Bartolus di Sassoferrato [1313-1357] was a professor of law at the University of Perugia. His authority as an expositor of Roman law was immense, and it endured for centuries. A practical lawyer, Bartolus attempted to derive principles suitable to his time from the accumulated layers of local, feudal and Roman law. Joseph Henry Beale [1861-1943] was a professor at Harvard Law School and served as the first dean of the University of Chicago Law School. An influential authority on the conflict of laws, corporations and criminal law, he also published important work in legal history and bibliography. He was a distinguished classicist while an undergraduate at Harvard. "Mr. Beale in this translation presents a clear statement of these principles as laid down by Bartolus and the modern lawyer should have no difficulty in understanding the true meaning. (.) The book should prove of practical assistance to those engaged in tracing the historical development of the law, and should be of interest, at least from an historical point of view, to every lawyer." --E.W.M., 63 University of Pennsylvania Law Review 583 (1915).
