Description
Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1928. Archive of 94 vintage, double weight photographs from the 1928 film. Inspired by the 1919 nonfiction travel book by Frederick O'Brien, and retaining much of that work's anti-imperialist themes, about an alcoholic doctor who is set adrift by white traders after objecting to their treatment of the Polynesian workers, only to wash ashore on an island where the natives have never seen a white man. MGM's first film with a fully prerecorded soundtrack, comprised of music and sound effects, including, most notably, the first time the company's mascot Leo the Lion roared at the film's start, although the film doesn't quite classify as a talkie, as only the single whispered word "hello" appears in the soundtrack. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Set on a Polynesian Island, shot on location in Tahiti, at the time an ambitious endeavor to shoot a Hollywood film on location among native islanders, using many of them as extras in the film. 10 x 8 inches. Generally Very Good, with expected light curling and fading, with occasional light creasing or bruising to the photographs. In a custom cloth clamshell box. For buyers with a serious potential interest in purchase, a link to a complete set of watermarked images is available on request. Godard, Histoire(s) du cinema.

Description
1954. First Edition. Signed. WILLIAMS, Tennessee. The Kingdom of Earth with Hard Candy. A Book of Stories. Hartford, [New York]: New Directions, (1954). Tall octavo, original half brown cloth, original slipcase. $3200.Signed limited edition, published the same year as the first edition and including the story “The Kingdom of Earth,” not included in the trade edition, number 17 of only 100 numbered copies (out of a total of approximately 135), signed on the copyright page by Tennessee Williams. One of four collections of short fiction by Tennessee Williams. At the time the first edition of Hard Candy was published, Tennessee Williams wanted to include Kingdom of Earth, a story about ""relations among a dying transvestite, his sluttish bride, and his brother"" (Hart, 831). However, his publisher, fearing an obscenity-based backlash, encouraged him to accept a compromise. Eventually Williams agreed to publish the first edition of this collection without Kingdom of Earth, but demanded that a special signed limited edition including the story be published that same year. Thus, this signed limited edition uses the original sheets from the first edition of Hard Candy, but bears a cancel title page with a signed limitation statement on the verso and contains Kingdom of Earth at the end. While the limitation page claims that 100 copies of this work were published, that number is believed to refer to the number of copies intended for Williams' own private distribution, of which this copy is number 17. Approximately 35 additional copies, some signed, were published for the use of the publisher, but those are all believed to contain various non-numeric notations on the limitation page. Most of the original 100 copies were later destroyed, making this the rarest of Williams' works. Crandell A13.I.b. Owner signature in yellow felt pen.Text fresh with only tiny bit of spotting to one leaf (227-8), expert repair to inner paper hinges, faintest edge-wear to boards; expert archival repair to slipcase. A highly desirable extremely good copy.

Description
188 pages Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original black cloth with pink inverse lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Inscribed by the author. First edition. Langston Hughes said of this novel, "Tambourines to Glory is an urban folk tale set against a background of colorful independent, unorthodox churches which have sprung up all over Harlem in the last decade. It is in no sense an attack on organized religion, or on cults as such, but is a fictional expose of certain ways in which religion is misused in large city communities today by various types of unscrupulous leaders who might be called 'gospel racketeers,' preying upon the gullibility of simple people." Condition: Points rubbed, corners bumped, inscribed by Hughes on front end paper, book plate to front paste down, back end paper verso previous owner's name. Original jacket restored by Octavaye Studios, else a very good copy in like jacket.

Description
New-York: Mott & Lyon, 1796. Original Edition, Not a Reprint; First New York Edition. Leather bound. Text block clean and totally tight but with light age toning to the print. Spine leather cracking vertically in two places; leather title block detaching at right edge. General rubbing to covers with wear to edges and head/tail of spine worn down. Paste-down from Essex Institute (presumably library) on front end paper, dated either 1907 or 1967. Fountain pen name/date on title page and last page, Mary Van Schalkwyck, 1884. Brown leather/boards; swirl design. Seven non-raised gilt bands on spine with brown leather title block and gilt lettering. v, [1], 238 pp. with no illustrations. Johann Georg Ritter von Zimmermann was a Swiss philosophical writer, naturalist, and physician. This was his second book, written beginning in 1756. The owner of this particular volume, Mary Van Schalkwyck, likely is the same one referenced thus: " In the epistolary conversation she and Mary Van Schalkwyck published in five installments between July 1804 and July 1805, Mary Emerson played the part of Constance to her friend's Cornelia, in elevated discourses on death, the imagination, the study of nature, and biography." The Mary Emerson in question was Mary Moody Emerson, Ralph Waldo's aunt. Mary Van Schalwyck likely was Mary Wilder Van Schalwyck. A nice memento for someone interested in the genealogy of Mary Van Schalwyck and an interesting book in its own right. NOTE: This is the scarce first New York printing.

Description
[Washington, 1866. 6, [1], [1 blank] pp. A folded folio sheet, lightly worn and untrimmed. Near Very Good. The Republican Party gives itself three cheers for the Homestead Act and, in question and answer format, explains its provisions, including its 1864 and 1866 amendments. Unlike the vast pre-War landholdings in the former Slave States, the Homestead Act enhances the aspirations of the small farmer and explicitly opposes land monopolies. Appropriate forms are included, along with a list of Land Offices in the Southern, Western, and Midwestern States. The Act's provisions are available to former Confederates, for these were generally "poor men, and hundreds of thousands of them were forced into the service and made to fight against a Government they never ceased to love and revere." The pamphlet is not rare in institutional holdings, but uncommon in the marketplace.

Description
London: Wells Gardner, Darton & Co, 1902. Third Edition. Hardcover. Good. Third Edition. Hardcover. When young Rhoda laments her embarrassment in not knowing the difference between a buttercup and a daisy and dreams aloud that she could learn from the flowers themselves, good Dame Nature and wise Lady Science themselves appear in person to grant her wish, instructing the best-known member of each of Dame Nature's twelve chief tribes to tutor Rhoda themselves. Our heroine, with little brother Hugh reluctantly in tow, begins her lessons with "the strange yellow governess" Miss Buttercup, who instructs her in the difference between Dicotyledonous and Monocotyledonous plants, her "little frog" tribe of Ranunculus, her family name of Bulbosus, and the various components of her structure, from root to stamen, calyx, pistil, and petal. Rhoda and Hugh's other teachers include sober Mr. Cheiranthus the Wall-Flower, the well-connected Miss Daisy and her assistants, stately Mr. Foxglove and his carrier bee, Rhoda's namesake Miss Dog-Rose, pretty Master Peas-blossom, grave Mr. Hemlock, the affronted Mr. White Dead-Nettle, "the fair maid of February" Miss Snowdrop, demure Miss Primrose, fragrant Miss Violet, and the imperious Mr. Early Purple Orchis. Each flower represents their "tribe" or genus and their teachings conclude with helpful notes provided by Lady Science at the end of each chapter. A charmingly personal Victorian guide, published in 1900, to the "flower folk" fitting for all ages, which will have you joining The Parents Review in 1892 in declaring, "the work is a charming one and converts the flowers into familiar friends." 8 1/2" X 5 5/8". xv, 205pp, plus one page of ads. Presents nicely in protective archival jacket. Bound in sky blue cloth over boards, with bouquet of daisies stamped in white and dark green and bundled with a pink ribbon to upper board, white blossom and green leaves to spine, with both lettered in gilt. Blossom and title stamped in green to rear board. Moderate to heavy wear to binding, with warping to boards, gentle bumping to extremities, hard rubbing to top edges, and mild soiling and scattered rubbing to boards. Tissue-guarded chromolithographic frontispiece by Rose Hue. Rather clumsy previous glue repair to front hinge. Binding remains quite firm and sound. Bookseller's ticket of Blink & Sons, Ramsgate to rear pastedown. About 10 of the 150 figures studiously water-colored in by a previous owner and pages have a pronounced musty scent. Illustrated in chromolithographic frontispiece by Rose Hue and over 150 botanical vignettes by Dr. Henry Godfrey.

First Edition/Stated First Printing; A near fine book in a very good dust jacket. SIGNED by the author on the front free end paper. Scarce in this condition, particularly signed. This copy is in near fine condition with only some light sunning to the top board edges and a minor crimp to the lower spine end, else fine. Housed in a very good price clipped dust jacket that is clean and bright but does show some light rubbing to the flap edges, corners, and spine ends, and some minor fading to the spine lettering. Overall, a very nice copy, rare in this condition; not remaindered, not ex-library. In archival protection.

New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Good. (c.1935). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a good solid copy, but with considerable external spotting, mostly to spine and front cover; internally clean and well-bound, but still best to consider this a reading copy only]. Novel about four college classmates (Yale, Class of 1928) who get together in 1934 to swap tales of their trials and tribulations in the intervening early Depression years. The New York Times critic was quite disdainful of the whole enterprise: "No argot is so flavorless, unimaginative, spurious, artificial and witless as the jargon of the campus. Mr. Ingham revels in it ad nauseam. If we take his word for it, Yale undergraduates, and particularly the class of '28, and especially [the novel's main characters] are youthful infantiles whose vainglorious deeds, puppy itches, childish mentalities and baby emotions can scarcely be taken seriously except as phenomena." (Sounds to me like sour grapes from a critic -- the review is signed only "F.T.M." -- who couldn't get into an Ivy League school.) The author turned out just one more novel, "Play On Your Harp," the following year; it was trashed by a different New York Times critic, and that apparently did it as far as his novelistic ambitions were concerned. .
