Description
2017. CORNELL, Joseph. A Joseph Cornell Pop-Up Book for All Ages. With text by Sandra Leonard Starr. 103 pp. Includes a 3D Viewer, 6 pop ups and a folding panorama. Oblong folio, bound in publisher's blue cloth and paper label preserved in a new blue cloth folding box. Tokyo: Tokyo Publishing House, 2017. An extraordinary homage to Joseph Cornell in the form of an artist's book. The book is a result of a shared passion for Cornell between the Japanese art dealer Shigeru Yokota and the American art historian Sandra Starr.Although originally conceived as a book for children in homage to Cornell's love for children, its elaborate nature and expense has turned it into an artist's book for adults. As new. Published in an edition of 30 copies.

Description
Hartford: Printed by Case, Lockwood & Brainard, 1871. First edition. Very Good. 115 x 182 mm. 40 pp. Publisher's paper self-wrappers. Some toning and dampstaining, mostly to outer leaves. A bit of minor foxing to first leaf. Creasing to upper corner. A Good+ copy of an important item. Founded by Frances Ellen Burr and Isabella Beecher Hooker in 1869, the Connecticut Women's Suffrage Association (CWSA) was one of the most prominent local organizations in the women's suffrage movement. The CWSA was staffed by prominent women like Hooker's sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe; Phebe Hanaford; and Olympia Brown, all of whom were engaged in the abolitionist movement as well as the fight for women's rights. Despite the ideological rifts that were already forming in the suffrage movement, early supporters of the CWSA included Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, William Lloyd Garrison, and Julia Ward Howe - the latter of whom was contemporaneously organizing her own extremely influential activist group, the New England Woman's Suffrage Association (NEWSA). In turn, the CWSA supported the efforts of larger groups like the National Woman's Suffrage Association, along with successfully campaigning for women's voting rights in local elections and for women's labor rights. These CWSA tracts were the mouthpiece of the organization. The tracts communicated updates on the movement in Connecticut and the ideological stances of the organization, which they articulated in tracts like A Mother's Letters to a Daughter on Woman Suffrage (1870), authored by Hooker; and The Bible and Woman Suffrage (1874), by her husband John. This first tract, Legal Disabilities of Married Women, details the repercussions of coverture - the legal concept that merged a woman's legal status with that of her husband and, as a result, stripped married women of their property rights. Along the path to the 19th Amendment, securing property rights was one of the central goals of the women's rights movement; in 1877, the CWSA also succesfully campaigned for a bill allowing women to retain their property after marriage. Very Good.

Keats published the first edition of Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and Other Poems, his third and final volume of poetry, in the summer of 1820. He died of tuberculusis early the next year at the age of twenty-five. "This volume contains his greatest work, written in an astonishing burst of creative genius in 1819. It includes Lamia, his tale of love and betrayal in ancient Corinth as well as his six famous odes, now considered among the most famous verses in the English language" (Penguin). This edition pairs Keats' poetry with lively woodcuts that highlight the mythical, mystical, and romantic aspects of his work. Very Good.

Wrappers worn, small chips to edges, some minor sunning, spine cocked, still a very good copy of this very scarce title.
Description
Madrid: [Talleres Espasa-Calpe], 1929. First edition. Paper wrappers. Wrappers worn, small chips to edges, some minor sunning, spine cocked, still a very good copy of this very scarce title.. 300 pp. Sm. 8vo. Warmly inscribed by the author to Enrique Naranjo. 'Sonatina Gijonesa,' the second work by the Asturian author, José Barcia, created an uproar because of its caustic portrayal of the social parasitism of the wealthy classes. Though the novel is somewhat autobiographical, and many of the characters were easily identifiable (which no doubt intensified the uproar), the work is marked by an early experimentalism and break with more traditional storytelling. José Fernández Barcia (1887-1948) born in Gijón, emigrated to Argentina, knocked around in dead end jobs, served in the Uruguay National guard and as a trade Unionist in France, but returned to Gijon to write his first work, Andanzas (Gijón, 1924), an autobiography. He again left, traveled to Germany where he taught Spanish, and finally returned to Oviedo to write this novel. (See Alvaro Ruiz de la Peña, Introducción a la literatura asturiana, pp. 193-196). We could locate only two copies: BN Spain and B. Univ. Oviedo. Provenance: Copy of Enrique Naranjo Martinez, Colombian Consul in Boston. Suares: Escritores y artistas asturianos III, pp.188-191.

Description
London: J. Murray, 1776. Cullen, William (1710-90). A letter to Lord Cathcart, president of the Board of Police in Scotland, concerning the recovery of persons drowned and seemingly dead. [4], 45, [3, including publisher's ads] pp. London: J. Murray, 1776. 227 x 145 mm. (uncut). Original plain wrappers, a little worn at spine, extremities chipped. Very good. First Edition. Cullen, Professor of Medicine at Edinburgh University, was the foremost British clinical teacher of his time (see Garrison-Morton.com 2204). In response to a request from Lord Cathcart, president of Scotland's Board of Police, Cullen explained in the present pamphlet the physiological reasons for attempting resuscitation of the apparently drowned: "[I]n men, and other animals, life does not immediately cease upon the cessation of the action of the lungs and heart, and the consequent ceasing of the circulation of the blood . . . the living state of animals does not consist in that alone, but especially depends upon a certain condition in which the nerves, and muscular fibres, by which they are sensible and irritable, and upon which the action of the heart itself depends" (pp. 2-3). Cullen argued that this "certain condition," which he called "the vital principle," can persist for some time after the heart stops beating, and as long as it is present "all the functions of life may also, though they have many of them long ceased, be again entirely restored" (p. 3). He therefore recommended that efforts should always be made to revive victims of drowning. Cullen also described current methods of resuscitation, both useful and not; he recommended artificial respiration, keeping the victim warm and dry, and blowing tobacco smoke into the rectum. France, "Some eighteenth century authorities on the resuscitation of the apparently drowned," Anaesthesia 30 (1975): 530-538. .
