EDITION* . *** **** *** . . . A FABULOUS & EARLY JESUIT ACCOUNT . . . OF LIFE IN CHINA . . . A FASCINATING 1655 PRIMARY RESOURCE . *** SUBTITLE: continued: "Together with the Traffic & Commodities of that Country. Now put into English by a Person of Quality, and Illustrated with Several Maps and Figures, to Satisfy the Curious & Advance the Trade of Great Britain." . THE FIRST & BEST ENGLISH EDITION: This is the First English translation of the original Italian title Semedo wrote in 1643: RELATIONE DELLA GRANDE MONARCHIA DELLA CINA, translated into English, by "A Person of Quality." . *** WRITTEN IN "OLD" ENGLISH" These two titles were written in "Old English" of the period & commonly used "F" for "S" therefore below, we faithfully repeat the spelling on the title page, as issued. . *** THE AUTHOR: FATHER ALVAREZ F. SEMEDO, S.J. [1585/86?-1658] Semedo was a Portuguese Jesuit, and was known by variant names depending on which language was used: Álvaro de Semedo, in Latin: Alvarus de Semedo. In China he was known as Xie Wulu and later as Zeng Dezhao. He lived and worked some 20 years in China. . *** BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR: Álvaro Semedo was born in Nisa, Portugal in 1585 or 1586. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1602, and on 29 March 1608, he left for Goa and the Far East aboard Nossa Sra. do Vencimento. He arrived in Macao [Aomen] in 1610, and Nanjing in 1613. Along with another Jesuit, Alfonso Vagnoni, he was imprisoned during an anti-Christian campaign in Nanjing in 1616 and then sent back to Macao [Aomen in Chinese, a Portuguese Colony], where he stayed until 1621. . As the persecution campaign in the mainland China abated, Fr. Semedo changed his Chinese name from Xie Wulu to Zeng Dezhao and re-entered China, now working in Jiangsu and Jiangnan provinces. He spent most of his term in China in the central and southern provinces. Perhaps his only trip north was made to Xi'an in 1625, during which he was the first European to see the recently unearthed Nestorian Stele. . In 1636, Semedo went back to Europe as a procurator, sent by his Order to recruit people for the China mission and to ensure continued assistance from the church in Europe. During his sojourn in Europe, he published a long report on China, best known under its Spanish title, IMPERIO DE LA CHINA. . After his return to China, Semedo served in Guangzhou [Old Canton Guangdong] as the Vice-Provincial of the Jesuit China Mission. During several years after the fall of Beijing to the Manchus in 1644, he continued to work with the Ming loyalist regimes in the Southern China [notably, sending Michal Boym to the court of the Southern Ming Yongli Emperor], even as most of Jesuits elsewhere in China were switching their loyalty to the recently established Qing Dynasty. Once the Qing took Canton, Semedo was detained, but was freed a few months later, reportedly due to the interference of Beijing-based Johann Adam Schall von Bell. He spent the rest of his life in Guangzhou, where he died. . *** CONTENTS: Semedo arrived in China in 1613, and wrote about the general kingdom of China, based on his travels, with very lucid commentaries on the thirteen provinces, reporting on each. Chinese habits, manners, language, doctors, books, sciences, arts, civilization, games, marriage, funerals, religion, superstitions, sacrifices, military, arms, role of Tartars, Kings & Queens, nobility, government, peculiarities, Mandarin badges, law, prisons, punishments, Moors, Jews, Christians. With some good focus on preaching of the Gospel. Persecutions of Fathers [Catholics] in Nanking & Peking and other places, martyrdom of Christians. Supplement of the cruel war with the Tartars. . *** VALUABLE PRIMARY RESOURCE A nicely done early and valuable primary source and stunning middle 17th. century historical primary work on China by resident Jesuits. . *** COPPER ENGRAVED PAGES: PLEASE NOTE: Not all copies have these plates. Copies vary, please carefully read the descriptions for each copy prior to ordering. . a. Frontispiece of Semedo b. Title page c. AN EXACT MAP OF CHINA, 1655, after p. 1, large folding. d. Aulus Persius Flaccus (34-62) was a Roman satiric poet, a friend of Lucan and much influenced by Horace. He is the author of six satires which expounded the tenets of Stoicism. Decimus Junius Juvenalis (60?-?140) was a satirist of Roman vices under the Empire. He is the author of sixteen satires, divided, as here, in five books, and include biting attacks on public manners and morals. Description
N.p.: William Castle Productions, 1961. Vintage 40 x 60 inch poster for the 1961 film. Rare in this size format. A mysterious woman offers a bellboy $2000 to marry her, only to brutally murder the justice of the peace during the ceremony before fleeing. Widely regarded as one of the best films of director and B-movie maestro William Castle, and undeniably influenced by Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho," released the year prior. Castle, well known for his utilization of promotional gimmicks, implemented a "Fright Break" for "Homicidal;" a 45-second timer which overlays the impending climax with Castle's voice-over advising the audience they could leave the theater and receive a full refund if they were too frightened to see the ending of the film (audience members who chose to leave however, would have to wait in a yellow cardboard booth, entitled the "Coward's Corner," manned by a nurse with a blood pressure cuff). 40 x 60 inches. Very Good plus, with light overall creasing and minor edgewear, else bright and unfaded. See image.

Universal City: Universal Pictures, 1940. Vintage publicity photograph of Buster Crabbe and Carol Hughes from the 1940 serial film. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Based on the 1934 comic-strip character created by Alex Raymond. The third serial of "Flash Gordon," presented in twelve chapters, preceded by "Flash Gordon" (1936) and "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" (1938). A strange and deadly plague, the Purple Death, believed to be the work of the evil Emperor Ming, is ravaging the Earth, and Flash Gordon is the only hope to stop it. 8 x 9.75 inches. Description
New York: Appleton and Company, 1853. First Edition. Preceding the London book edition by three years. 2 vols., 8vo (173 × 115mm), pp. 267, [1]; 260. Green three-quarter morocco and marbled paper-covered boards, ca. 1900, by James Macdonald, who purchased the Club Bindery from the estate of Robert Hoe. Ruled in gilt, raised bands, gilt-ruled compartments and lettering, blue marbled endpapers with Macdonald's stamp to the verso of the front free endpaper of each volume. Top edge gilt, original red cloth covers bound into the rear of each volume. Rubbing to the extremities, hinges in volume II strengthened, pencil ownership signature of Alice Evans in each volume, a very good set. First serialized in Fraser's Magazine from January to December 1844 under the pseudonym George Savage Fitz-Boodle, the novel is a picaresque autobiography narrated by Redmond Barry, an Irish fortune hunter whose account of his own rise through soldiering, gambling, and an advantageous marriage is so cheerfully self-serving that the reader is left to deduce the squalid truth beneath the boasting; Thackeray's most accomplished use of the unreliable narrator and his first fully realized "novel without a hero," the technique he would perfect four years later in Vanity Fair. It was poorly received in serial form; readers found it harsh and unsympathetic, and Thackeray himself called its composition a nightmare, finishing the final chapters in Malta while his ship sat in quarantine. He revised and retitled it The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq. in 1856, but neither version found a wide audience in his lifetime. Stanley Kubrick's 1975 film adaptation reversed that neglect permanently. Shot over 300 days, with scenes lit famously by candlelight using Zeiss lenses made for NASA, and composed in painterly tableaux drawn from Reynolds, Constable, and Hogarth, Barry Lyndon replaced Thackeray's comic first-person narration with an omniscient camera of devastating impersonality. It is now widely regarded as one of the greatest examples of film as art.

Description
folio, two pages, inscribed on four page bi-folium, docketed in ink on rear leaf, paper somewhat stained holes in paper affecting text of about seven words, in upper portion of each page, however the sense of the letter is unaffected, else good. Cunninghame writes to Barrington concerning Governor Melvill who commanded the Citadel at Port Royal and the general state of affairs there during a crucial point in the British campaign to take Guadeloupe. Cunninghame writes: "Sir By what Governor Melville has explained to me of the express to you of the 30th, the strain of it is so different from his first Reports of the Garrison that I need say noth[ing] more than that he now saw with his own eyes an[d shall?] be henceforth guided by his own judgment. The [true] cause of the gloom of that report was his being much out of Order and Confin'd so that he was obliged to depend on the representations of those that had not a proper view of the state of this Garrison. But since he has had time to consider and reflect on every Circumstance attending this place. I beg leave to confirm the opinion you formerly had that no Officer of your army will fulfill the duty of a Governor with more intelligence, circumspection and resolution than W. Melville (Barrington had appointed Melvill governor a week earlier) . We got here in time last night to make a tour of the works and its circuit superficially. The Enemy has got a Bomb Battery of one Mortar as the deserters say on the top of that green hill where a body of troops first appeared that day we attacked them under your command on the south side of the gallion. The gun battery reported is on the same side the trench under the large green tree the left commanding the Beach, the right towards the Jesuits on the south of the gallion I think exactly as the place our people used to fire so much upon while we were here. There are two guns and will probably open in a day or two. I beg'd the Governour to assemble all the Offic[ers to]night. In their prescence I explained to them the situation The reason of the commanding officer . and me being sent to them, your intentions toward them and [the] absolute necessity there was of defending this p[lace] to the last extremity against an impotent . and dispirited enemy . I beg'd to know if any one had doubts or apprehensions It was answered there was none there that wou'd not chuse to die in the Breach rather than give up the place improperly." The island of Guadeloupe was one of the most profitable of all the French colonies and as such was a prime target of the British during the conflict of the Seven Years War. The British forces attacked the neighboring island of Martinique on January 6, 1759 bombarding the town of Port Royal. The English forces under General Hopson and Commodore John Moore made an abortive attempt to capture the town. The bombardment of Basse Terre, Guadeloupe began on January 23, 1759, by Commodore Moore's squadron prior to its invasion by British troops. On January 24, an invasion force under General Hopson captured the town. General Hopson died on Guadeloupe on February 23, he was succeeded in command by Major-General John Barrington. The French surrendered the island to the British under General Barrington on May 1, 1759, after a three month campaign. The island was occupied by the British for four years and was returned to the French by the terms of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. France in order to retain Guadeloupe signed away her claims to Canada under this treaty. Despite the condition problems a most interesting letter from this campaign, material from which is extremely scarce.

Overall about good, with marginal dampstains, newsprint toned. Illus. stiff wraps. [768] After the popular election of a communist government under the leadership of E. M. S. 1911. turn of the century Championship Women's Baseball Team Photo Postcard. "The Western Bloomer Girls-Ladies Champion Base Ball Club-Watervliet, Mich." Vintage photo-illustrated postcard of the girls baseball team. No date, c. 1911. Eleven uniformed girls pose for a team photograph. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. The Western Bloomer Girls were founded in 1911 by Maud Nelson, a renowned pitcher in her own right. "Bloomer Girl" baseball teams of women were formed starting in the 1890s, taking their name from Amelia Bloomer who designed loose fitting trousers that women wore while playing sports. Bloomer Girls teams rarely played each other, but traveled across America, challenging local, amateur, and minor league men's teams. Bloomer Girls were disciplined sportswomen and frequently won games, with their solid skills and competitive spirits. Interestingly, these "Boomer Girl" teams were integrated when it came to gender; while most of the players were women, each roster had at least one male player. In this image, two male players pose in the second row. Verso is blank, with space for message and address. Light crease to bottom left corner. In very good condition.

Description
(ALAKSA ARCHIVE). Archive. 10 pieces. 1921-1922. Fort Liscum, Alaska Territory. An archive of four letters signed Alice and written by Alice Donaldson in Alaska to her mother and aunt in Massachusetts. Donaldson, her husband, and their children lived on the Fort Liscum Army base from 1921 until the bases closure in 1922. Written during the year that the Donaldsons lived on the base, Alice talks about adjusting to life in Alaska and then having to move again within a year. Along with her letters are six small photographs of Alaska.a) ALS. June 10, 1921. Fort Liscum, Alaska. Dear Mother:- It is almost time for the brat to come back after mail for the south so I will tell you all we have been doing this week. Sunday was a wonderful day we took our lunch and walked out on theComing back we gathered seven kinds of wild flowers, daisies, buttercups, violets, wild sweet pea, a light purple flower similar to our columbine only smaller, a dark purple flower almost like our snap dragon and salmon berry blossoms. There are quantities of ferns everywhere. I have a centerpiece for my dining table made of a tin can, cut down to two inchesWith much love for father and yourself Alice.b) ALS. June 30, 1921. Fort Liscum, Alaska. Dear Mother :- If you could look in, and see us I think you would say we have a very pretty and comfortable home. Out things arrived early Tuesday morning, and they were all uncrated and mostly in place Tuesday night. The things which I ordered from Sears-Roebuck came at the same time.c) ALS. March 13, 1922. Fort Liscum, Alaska. Dear Mother:- Can you image what it would be like to have a March wind blowing a gale with about three feet of loose snow on top of a crust? That is what we have had for twenty-four hours sometimes we couldnt see the nearest houses, there are drifts every where, the most bothersome one is in front of our dining room windowsWe were all very much excited yesterday, the order came confirming the rumor that Liscum is to be abandoned and asking how long it will take to get everything ready to be moved to Ft. Seward, with about nine ft of snow on the ground we replied, at least two months. George has asked for a Transport June tenth. As the order reads we go to Ft. Seward but George is still hoping to be brought back to the States and go to Benning. I rather dislike the idea of packing everything again in just one year!d) ALS. May 21, 1922. Fort Liscum, Alaska. Dear Aunt Laura:- This is Georges birthday and we have been celebrating by having our first picnic of the season in a rocky cove down at the end of Swansport. We took frying pans and built a fire so as to cook beefsteak, fry potatoes and make coffee. It certainly does taste good out of doors. In order to get to the camping place we had to walk quite a distance overa short play in which Donald made his first appearance on the stage, he did better than I expected, and looked quite grown up in a long trouser suit. All the children were promoted with an average of about 90. We have all had bad colds but are feeling fine today. We were very sorry to hear that Uncle Perl has been so miserable and hope he will improve a lot and enjoy the summer he usually feels better when he can get out doors more. When I wrote you after Christmas I thought I spoke about Helens Sash, it is perfectly stunning with her blue corduroy dress, and she was so pleased with it. Much love to you both Alice.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: In this book, which is now considered a classic in its field, MS Anderson examines the Eastern Question in all its aspects, based on secret treaty documents, embassy reports and memoirs of diplomats. The Eastern Question is another name for the imperialist policies implemented by the European Great Powers, primarily the Ottoman Empire, in the Near East since the late 18th century. This form of politics, which paved the way for the emergence of international diplomacy in the modern sense, was the joint product of secret treaties that observed delicate balances, long-term interests and, most importantly, ambitious politicians. A series of political and economic events within the Eastern Question, from the Suez Canal to the Baghdad Railway project, from Balkan nationalism to the Arab uprising, also shed light on today's problems through Anderson's narration.(Publisher).

Oakland, CA: Biobooks [Gillick Press, printer], 1947. First Edition, 1st Printing. Very Good Plus. Limited to 1000 copies [11x8in], [16], 245 pp., [1] colophon, five color sketches by Revere, chapter heading designs, forward with dedication to Dr. Robert Semple and facsimile letter, copy of letter from Navy Department regarding Joseph Revere's service and assignment to the U.S.S. Portsmouth 1846 to 1848; Gray-blue cloth covers with gilt lettering on spine and gilt design on front, illustrated end papers of ship on front and map of San Francisco bay area by Revere on rear, fore edge untrimmed; Minimal shelf wear to covers, edges or corners, light rubbing to covers, joints and bottom edge, ink signature of prior owner on front end paper. Joseph Warren Revere (1812-1880) was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy assigned to the Portsmouth in the Pacific squadron. At the start of the Mexican War in 1846, Revere took command the California Battalion in Sonoma, an important community in Northern California at the time. After securing the area, Revere spent time touring the countryside. This book is a reprint of "A Tour of Duty in California, Including a Description of the Gold Region: and an account of a Voyage around Cape Horn; with notices of Lower California, the Gulf and Pacific Coasts, and the principal events attending the conquest of the Californias" published in 1849. The original book, when issued, was an "... essential firsthand account of the takeover and life in California ... filled with thoughtful analysis and conjecture on the future of California ... " . The book contains one of the best early descriptions of California and the Gold Rush. Revere left California before the gold discovery, but included Mason's report and extracts of letters from Thomas O. Larkin and comments on the impact of the discovery to California. Revere was the grandson of Paul Revere and was also a talented artist that provided the sketches in book. [Kurutz in Volkmann's Zamorano 80 Catalogue]. This reprint published by Joseph A. Sullivan ( ) of Biobooks.
