Description
Finished watercolor study for the original dust jacket design of Little Toot, the book was published in 1939. (G P Putnam's Sons, NY). Hardie Gramatky (1907–1979), an American author, artist and watercolorist worked as an animator for Walt Disney, and when he settled back in New York, his studio overlooked the East River, where he saw the cityscape and the boat traffic along the Hudson which inspired the story of "Little Toot". Disney featured the classic children's story in an animation short as part of Melody Time (1948). Provenance: From the Artist's Estate, acquired directly from the family.

Newtown, Powys: Gwasg Gregynog, 1998. Limited edition. Hardcover. Fine. Illustrated by Kyffin Williams. Folio. (40)pp finely printed on Velin Arches mould-made paper in Baskerville type. Linen cloth printed in black on the spine and with an illustration by Williams on the upper board. Illustrated with eight full page 2 color linocuts by Kyffin Williams, who also designed the book. One of 350 numbered copies signed by the illustrator; this is copy No. 285. A fine copy. Pryderi is the only character to appear in all four branches of the Maninogi. He provides the theme for these talks, originally presented as radio talks in 1943. In 1962, Kyffin Williams produced a set of linocuts to accompany a University of Wales edition, but they remained unpublished until now. .

Image size is 16 x 11 1/2 inches. Sheet size is 21 1/2 x 14 1//2 inches. Drawn by Domenico Quaglio II (German, Munich 1787 - 1837 Hohenschwangau, near Fussen) and printed by G. Moore. Dampstain in lower left corner easily matted out.
