Description
Alain Campbell White letters to Frederick Gamage cover the years from April 4, 1935 to September 15, 1944. For this ten year period there are 364 dated letters and 28 incomplete letters (lacking front date page). The letters are an ongoing correspondence between White and Gamage which covers all aspects of problem chess. The letters show a development of mentor (White), encouraging ad occasionally prodding his protégé (Gamage) in developing skills in problem construction. As the letters progress over this ten year period, the reader can observe the relationship develop between the two men, from a formal intercourse to a more comradely banter. White offered suggestions, comments and themes for problems. White's vast and profound technical knowledge, his artistic appreciation, his ability in expressing himself, and his enthusiastic and friendly encouragement were the great inspiration of many problems Gamage constructed, and he was lucky enough to be among his host of correspondents. Some of the letters were multiple pages hand typed, but often hand written, some unsigned or just initialed, usually with the location White was residing and the date written. Included with the letters are the limited edition work by Alain White on Gamage Frederick Gamage: An Artist in Chess Problems and Mike Prcic's book Frederick Gamage. The letters in the latter work have been reproduced from the original letters offered now.Newman Guttman was one of a few problemists to visit Frederick Gamage. After the passing of Gamage, the letters from Alain White along with Gamage's other chess papers were given to Guttman. He, in turn, gave these papers to Edgar Holladay. Holladay came into the possession of what problemists would consider as "treasures," one-of-a-kind items from famous and well-known problemists. Robert Moore and Holladay were good friends and these were passed to him by Holladay's wife, Rita.Serious buyers may inquire about more information regarding this collection.Condition:The letters have folds for postage, some occasional stains, and occasional edge wear else a very good collection. They are housed in individual archival holders held in a multiple three ring binders.

London: Henry J. Alfred, 1857. Six Fine Hand Colored Views of The River Thames ALFRED, Henry J. Views on the Thames... Marlow Weir, Near Marlow Bridge, Bisham Abbey,Temple Lock, Hurley, Harleyford. London: Henry J. Alfred, 1857. First edition. Oblong folio (13 1/2 x 20 inches; 343 x 508 mm.). Six fine hand colored plates by H.J. Alfred, lithographed by M & N Hanhart, all with tissue guards. Plate image size 7 3/4 x 11 5/8 inches; 197 x 295 mm. Early-to-mid twentieth century three quarter blue calf over marbled boards ruled in blind. Smooth spine with maroon morocco label horizontally lettered in gilt. Publisher's printed tan wrappers bound in. Some occasional light spotting/soiling to blank margins only, last plate with marginal crease, rear blank wrapper with neat repair at top. Still a near fine example. This scarce and charming work depicts a series of views of the upper reaches of the River Thames at a time when boating was becoming increasingly popular as a means of escaping into the countryside, away from the ever-growing urban development and industrialization. During this period, the demand for riverside properties also saw a significant increase. Abbey's copy lists the lithographs as being tinted. We are fairly confident that the coloring in our copy was done either at publication or at an early date. Rare: OCLC/KVK locate no copies in libraries and institutions worldwide. We have not been unable to locate any other copies at auction but we did find a record of one other copy in a 1950 Maggs of London catalog. The Plates: 1. Marlow Weir 2. Near Marlow Bridge 3. Bisham Abbey 4. Temple Lock 5. Hurley 6. Harleyford Abbey, Scenery 437; Bobins III, 830.

Description
Paris: J. Monrocq, 1855. 'Fair Ideas' ADAM, Victor. La Foire aux Idées. Paris: J. Monrocq, [ca. 1855]. Small oblong quarto (5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches; 145 x 216 mm.). [Title on front cover]. Twenty-two leaves, all lithograph illustrations. Plates lithographed by Becquet freres. Publisher's embossed red paper over boards, front cover decorated in gilt surrounding a pale blue cartouche with the title in gilt. Small booksellers label of J. Berville and engraved bookplate of Yves Marchand on front pastedown. A selection of 22 fine lithograph plates from Victor Adam's 1851 book of the same title - a wonderful selection of sketches, jokes, caricatures, costumes, games, animals and fantasies... A fine example of one of the 'extract' albums. The present edition was published around the same time or slightly later than the original folio edition of 1851. These half-size small oblong quarto albums with extracts from the original edition had each original plate divided into two (5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches; 145 x 216 mm.) format plates so that the head of the numbered plate appeared successively with the current title and the heel of the same plate with the publisher's address. The present example brings together the eleven 'split' plates which carry the numbers 50, 55, 56, 57, 59, 65, 66, 70, 71(lower), 76 and 82 plus one unidentified. The first plate has been partially colored at an early date. The original large quarto edition of 1851 contained one hundred numbered lithograph plates with between two and fifteen subjects on a page. All plates had the running title "La Foire Aux Idées Par V. Adam" and the imprints of "Paris. J. Monrocq - éditeur" [and] "Lith. de Becquet frères, à Paris". Jean-Victor Adam (1801-1867) was a French painter and lithographer. Born in Paris he was the son of Jean Adam, an esteemed engraver. During the years 1814 to 1818 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and also in the ateliers of Meynier and Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited 'Herminia succouring Tancred.' He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Museum at Versailles, amongst which are, 'The Entry of the French into Mainz,' 'The Battle of Varroux,' 'The Taking of Menin, 'The Battle of Castiglione,' 'The Passage of the Cluse,' 'The Battle of Montebello,' 'The Capitulation of Meiningen;' the last three in association with Alaux. He also exhibited down to the year 1838: 'Henry IV., after the Battle of Coutras,' 'Trait of Kindness in the Duke de Berri,' 'The Postillion,' 'The Vivandiere,' 'The Road to Poissy,' 'The Return from the Chase,' 'Horse-fair at Caen,' and numerous other subjects. He then retired from publicity, till 1846, when he appeared as the exhibitor of some works in lithography, to which branch of art he afterwards restricted himself. In this line he produced a lithographic album, 'Views in the Environs of Paris,' 'Studies of Animals for an edition of Buffon,' &c. He obtained a gold medal in 1824, a second class medal in 1836, besides several others from Lille, Douai, and other cities. He died at Viroflay in 1866. Grand Carteret, 620; Beraldi, I, p. 19, no. 9. 70, 71, 76 and 82.

Description
Boston: Washington Press, 1912. [4]pp., on a single folded sheet. Minor wear and soiling, a few short closed tears to edges, corners creased. About very good. A rather rare political campaign leaflet published by the Progressive Party's candidate for the 1912 gubernatorial election, Charles Sumner Bird. The interior includes a photographic portrait of Bird, claiming him as "The Man for You...Colored Men and Women..." and thereafter listing the reasons Bird is the right candidate for African-American voters. The first of these claims states that "He is the worthy son of the great Massachusetts abolitionist, anti-slavery fighter, friend of Douglas and member of the war governor, Andrew's, Council, Francis W. Bird of Walpole." The longer text on the last two pages details why the Progressive Party is right for African-American voters, in two main sections: "The Part of the Colored People in Founding the Party" and "The Colored People and Roosevelt." The latter claims Theodore Roosevelt as "the friend of the negro...who saved the negroes in the race riots...who opened up offices to colored men and women...whose record of appointments of colored men and women, both North and South, cannot be criticized..." and more. OCLC reports a single institutional holding, at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
