Description
Tokyo: Obshchestva Vostokovedeniia /Teikoku Insatsu Kabusiki Kaisia, 1906. Softcover. First edition; 22 1/2 x 15 cm; pp. 301; cloth-backed stiff card stock wraps; thin cuts to cloth at tips of spine and a bit of fraying; age-toning to margins of covers; minor rubbing to edges; pages mostly very clean; illustrated with tables; in Romaji, Russian, and original hieroglyphs; very good. An uncommon work on Japan and its early history, the book appears to have remained an only publication, though the title implies a second volume might have been in the works. Dimitrii Matveevich Pozdnieev (1865-1937) was one of Russia's most prominent orientalists. In the late 1890s he was a Professor of Economic Geography of the Far East at the Saint Petersburg University and from 1900 to 1903 he was appointed a Civil Servant Class VI in China by the Russian Ministry of Finance. While there, Pozdnieev negotiated a treaty for the import of Russian goods to China for which he was awarded Order of the Double Dragon Third Degree medal by Emperor Kuang-hsu. Dimitrii Pozdnieev arrived in Japan in 1906 and lived and worked there until 1910. There he compiled the first ever Japanese-Russian Hieroglyphic Dictionary. Upon his return to Russia he continued teaching at various institutions and authored several more books on Japan and the Far East. Pozdnieev's life ended tragically in 1937 when he was swept by Stalin's Purges, arrested, send to a concentration camp, and subsequently shot. Very few copies in institutions with none other in the trade (as of August, 2014).
