London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. Stiff card wraps. Fine. (iv), 16pp. Slim 8vo. Stiff wraps. Illustration by T. E. Webster as a frontispiece, repeated in part on the upper wrap. Tissue guard protects the frontispiece. Rare edition of Gammer Gurton, which was first published in 1784 by Joseph Ritson. This edition features not only much of Mother Goose, but other rhymes as well, and include two about King Arthur. And some rhymes have words that vary from the accepted norm. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. Threescore men, and threescore more, Cannot place Humpty Dumpty as he was before. OCLC dates this edition as of about 1846, and credits Walter and George Mason as the wood engravers for Webster's drawing. This copy is one of the many variants, being bound in cream colored wrappers, black and white illustrations and no publisher's ads. This copy comports to variants A - J in the Renier collection. A fine copy in publisher's stiff wraps. .
