Leipzig: Im Insel Verlag, 1925. First edition, hand-printed at the Cranach Presse by Harry Kessler for the Insel Verlag, with initials by Eric Gill, this being copy number XVII of 20 copies “fur den Handel Bestimmten Exemplaren”. Von Mises 172. Although the colophon states that the first fifty copies were printed on Japan, the roman-numeraled copies, or at least this one, was printed on laid büttenpapier. Presentation copy, inscribed on the second blank leaf by Rilke “À Monsieur et Madame Lucien Henraux / aux Dieux-Lares d’une commune admiration, très amicalement, R. M. Rilke, (Muzot, en Novembre 1925)”. Lucien Henraux was a French industrialist. His wife, Marie Bernieres-Henraux, was a sculptor and a student of Auguste Rodin, for whom Rilke had acted as secretary. Trained as a physician Daubenton did his best work as a naturalist and a teacher of veterinary science at the French national school at Alfort. He established an experimental farm in his home town of Montbard in Bourgogne and acquired Merino sheep. This flock was the first Merino flock in France and Daubenton went on to write this guide on the subject of shepherding and maintaining healthy flocks. In 1785, Sir Joseph Banks acquired a small group of the Merinos from Daubenton's stock to take back to his residence at Isleworth, near London. Dingley #213 - a much later printing only.

SIGNED BY BEADLE (crossed out in ink). Ownership signature of Norman Horowitz. Beadle and Tatum won the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Joshua Lederberg for their discovery that genes act by regulating definite chemical events. Beadle and Tatum are the fathers of modern genetics, and their work with Neurospora had tremendous importance for 20th century studies of heredity. It was this work on the Neurospora strain that led to their winning the Nobel Prize, and this article represents a key part of their joint studies. Also includes the article: "Spontaneous Mutations of Bacteria." By Max Delbruck, who won the 1969 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work on the replication mechanism and the genetic structure of viruses.
