Description
A Londres: 1754 First French translation. Contemporary French sheepskin, spine ornately gilt in compartments to a thistle motif, morocco label. Edges stained red. Octavo. Front joint slightly wormed and worn at base, corners lightly worn. Still, a handsome copy. This work opposed Hume's views on the population issue and contributed to the European debate in which Montesquieu (whose influence on Wallace is evident in his Persian Letters and The Spirit of Laws) championed the greater populousness of the ancient world, while Voltaire, like Hume, adopted a more sceptical position, waxing ironical at Wallace's expense in his article on population in the Dictionnaire philosophique" (Norah Smith in Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers).

Description
Jalapa: January 10, 1848. Near fine.. Mourning card, printed in gilt on black cardstock, with an elaborate ornamental border, 3.25 x 5 inches. Minor wear. An elaborate death notice honoring a decorated Mexican military commander in 1848. As a colonel under Santa Anna, Don Juan Morales (1802-1847) served as field commander for Mexican forces at the Alamo and Coleto in 1836, and as a Major General in the Mexican-American War. He served as commandant of Veracruz, abandoning the city when surrender seemed inevitable; he died shortly thereafter. The text of the card reads: "El dia 23 del procsimo pasado fallecio en Atlisco el Senor General Don Juan Morales, (Q. E. P. D.), Su Esposa, Hermanos, Parientes, Amigos y personas de estimacion, lo participan a V. llenos del mas acerbo sentimiento, suplicandole haga por su alma los sufragios que le dicte su piedad; por euyo favor le viviran reconocidos." This translates roughly as follows: "On the 23rd of last month, General Don Juan Morales (Rest in Peace) passed away in Atlisco. His wife, brothers, relatives, friends and loved ones share their deepest sympathy with you, begging you to do the prayers for his soul that your piety dictates; for which favor they will live on in his honor. Jalapa, January 10, 1848.

Description
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1795. Two pages measuring 10 x 16 ¼ inches. Toned, folded with tears at folds, and marginal damage; excellent.. A contract dated December 11th, 1795, between Philadelphia merchant John Godfried Wachsmuth and Secretary of the Treasury Oliver Wolcott Jr. in which Wachsmuth agrees to ship $113,000 worth of coffee, sugar, and cocoa to Amsterdam, for which the US government would advance Wachsmuth the funds. The items would be consigned to an Amsterdam banking house, the bankers would pay the proceeds to the United States, and the US would in turn pay Wachsmuth in specie. At the time, the US was finally recovering from the precarious financial situation that followed the Revolutionary War, and had successfully negotiated trade deals with Great Britain and Spain. Despite political upheaval in the Netherlands, the country had been and remained a significant trading partner for, and investor in, the US. This contract specifies that the goods will be consigned to Wilhelm and Jan Willink, Nicolaas and Jacob Van Staphorst, and Nicholas Hubbard; this group in particular invested heavily in the US, making large loans to the government and purchases of land (via the Holland Land Company), including investing in the Louisiana Purchase. A deal of this sort had a number of benefits for the new country; most importantly, it would continue to build a positive trade relationship with the Netherlands and improve the US’s credit abroad, and it would bring more specie into the US, which was experiencing a specie drain due to its imports exceeding its exports.[1] It involved significant risk for Wachsmuth—he would be responsible for ensuring the bankers ultimately received the value of the goods in specie—but the potential reward, in terms of both profits and a relationship with Amsterdam’s most important bankers, seem to have been worth it. Of interest to scholars researching the economic growth of the early United States, especially in terms of foreign trade relations. [1] Nicholas A. Curott and Tyler A. Watts, “What Caused the Recession of 1797?”, Studies in Applied Economics 48 (February 2016).
