About very good.
Description
New York: April 18, 1815. About very good.. Partially-printed document, completed in manuscript, 7.75 x 6.75 inches, docketed on verso. Old folds, with one fold line reinforced on verso and the other fold line almost completely separated. A very rare record of the experiences of the lives of free African Americans living in New York City in the early-19th century, even before the War of 1812. Here, a "black or mulatto man" named John Smith attests that he "rents a tenement in a house in Henry street" and "has been assessed in the seventh ward of the said city, and that he paid taxes in the year one thousand eight hundred and eleven." Smith has also signed the document with his mark, an interesting swirling "H"-shaped mark unlike the "X" usually seen on historical documents signed by illiterate individuals. The document is also notarized by a New York official. This is the first such document we have encountered.

Very good; some rumpling to the plates
Description
Berlin: Friedrich Maurer, 1790. "New Edition" (so stated) BUT the First Edition.. Somewhat later three-quarter leather.. Very good; some rumpling to the plates. 12mo, [6], [3] - 171, [1 - blank] pp. + 8 numbered folding plates on seven sheets. A detailed manual for the preparation of tobacco for smoking or as snuff. The author provides numerous recipes. But Arents points out the value of the book is in the illustrations. These display the tobacco mixing-churns, racks, moulders, and presses for roll-tobacco, kilns, cutting machines and implements for manufacture. There is no earlier edition than 1790 recorded. The edition statement on the title page is most likely an advertising ploy. The 1802 printing is listed as the second edition. Absent from Engelmann and preceding anything in the handlist by 20 years; Arents #972 (with an illustration); Immensack 39; VD18 - 90009053.
