Description
One fine folding engraved plate. [16] leaves. Small 4to, modern wrappers (minor browning). Hamburg: G. Rebenlein, [1681]. First edition of this scarce observation of the famous comet of 1680-81. Apart from its brightness, this comet is notable as the first to be observed using a telescope (by Gottfried Kirch in Coburg). Other well-known observers included Robert Hooke, Flamsteed, Newton, and John Evelyn. Voigt (1613-91) was a mathematician, astronomer, and writer of calendars. He studied mathematics at Erfurt and taught at Stade, near Hamburg. He observed the comets of 1664, 1665, and 1677. In this work, he provides a very detailed description of the appearance of the comet, its path, and significance. The fine folding plate depicts the comet’s path through the constellations. Fine copy and scarce. ❧ Kronk, Cometography, I, pp. 369-73.

In a clear hand throughout. At page 45 the hand changes to that of a professional looking secretarial hand that is without correction. T M Balliet's notes taken down by an unidentified student. Balliet had appointments at Dartmouth Medical School and had been the Attending Physician at the Old Man's Home in Philadelphia (founded 1864). He lectured on Therapeutics, i.e., the physiological relations of various medicines rather than their chemical properties, along with the different methods of administration. A number of commercial medicines are mentioned as are general groups. The text is specific, detailed, and very informative concerning the expectations when applied to specific illnesses. The notes are comprehensive, e.g., moving from strychnine through electricity.

Description
Glasgow: Wardlaw & Cunninghame, 1824. Second Enlarged Edition (UK prtg.).. Original blue paste paper boards and paper label.. Good; spine abraded; covers loose.. 8vo, 4 (adverts dated Feb., 1824), [4], xxix, [1 - blank], [31] - 510, [2 - plate list] pp. + 10 plates. The second enlarged edition edited by Granville Pattison who was professor of anatomy at the Univ. of Maryland in America. Pattison was a student of Burns in Edinburgh. The two men were on friendly terms and after Burns' early death Pattison took over his copyrights, business, and lectureship at the College Street medical School. This edition is enlarged by appx. 100 pages; probably issued subsequent to the American edition of a year prior when Pattison was still resident in Baltimore. Burns was a noted anatomist. This book is similar to that of Morgagni's great treatise in that it attempts to correlate pathological signs to specific diseases. The illustrations are specific. An important book in cardiology (see Bedford's comments in his catalog) and most uncommon in the original boards as issued. See G - M # 405 & #3055; Goldschmid, p. 113; see the Pattison biography.

Firenze: Nella Stamperia Granducale, 1841. 4to. 265 x 200 mm., [10 ¼ x 8 inches].  xxvi, 244, [1] pp.  Gift binding, bound in full purple morocco, with a large border of three designs, including  an outer gilt boarder of Greek design, a wider decorative leaf and vine pattern gilt border and a single fillet gilt border, all enclosing a large, embossed lozenge of patterned acanthus leaves and vines filling the center of both boards; spine decorated with six gilt panels and the title in gilt at the top.  The endpapers are of a very finely patterned purple silk with a spiral design; preliminary leaves a bit foxed.  Excellent Condition. Although unsigned, the execution of this binding, and high quality of the materials used suggest a highly skilled and practiced binder working for the state bindery of Florence.  The text is also very beautifully printed using a highly legible type for the text, highlighted with decorative ornaments and type at the beginning and end of chapters.  The paper stock is a very creamy white and the text is printed in the center of page leaving wide margins following the “golden rule” of page layout as practiced in early printed books.  Monsignor Rossi was a highly decorated member of the Church, having degrees from Rome and Florence in theology and law, and member of many societies that catered to needs of the faithful.  He published essays cover many different subjects.  As the introduction says, he wrote about the sacred and the profane, pastoral and the academic, and some essays on the condition of man in society.  The essays offered to the public in this volume include his message on the Virgin as the Mother of God, the Nativity of the Christ Child, the Visitation of the Virgin and Elizabeth, and the saints, Vincenzo di Paolo, Pacifico da San-Severino, and Giuseppe Calassanzio.  He also wrote an essay on the Propagation of Faithful and the Assumption of the Virgin to heaven.

Description
Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Co. Inc, 1958. Octavo (21.5 x 14.5 cm.), 362 pages. Third Edition, Revised. Perhaps the last of the classic cocktail books, a bookend of sorts to all of the pioneers that came before. Embury was nothing if not opinionated and blunt about expressing himself, so it comes as no surprise that David Wondrich puts him squarely in the "You may not know it, my friend, but you're drinking horse piss" school of drink writing. In this third, and some many think best, edition of the The Fine Art, Embury documents new changes in the cocktails he has included, and expands on his philosophy a good bit, including further comments on why a martini made with vodka is "a monstrosity". In addition to this information, this edition sports a true Mad Men- inspired dust jacket design, with a tasty photo by John Reed on the cover. Slight tide-line to bottom edge of publisher's yellow cloth, and a small chip to the head of the spine; in a price dust jacket, not price-clipped, with some wear to head of the spine and a light water stain to bottom edge (mostly visible on the interior of the jacket). Very near very good.

Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1974. First printing. 1974 NOTED BIOLOGIST'S STUDY OF HUMAN NATURE AND OUR CAPACITY TO SHAPE OUR FUTURE--SIGNED BY AUTHOR. 15.5x24 cm hardcover, green cloth binding, gilt decoration to cover, gilt title to spine, inscribed and signed on front free endpaper, "With warmest wishes/ Rene Dubos." i-xiii, 226 pp, light fading top cover edges, top corner pages bumped, light wear to jacket cover, crease front jacket flap, very good in very good jacket. RENE JULES DUBOS (1901 – 1982) was a French-American microbiologist, experimental pathologist, environmentalist, humanist, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book So Human An Animal. He is credited for having made famous the environmental maxim: "Think globally, act locally." Aside from a period from 1942 to 1944 when he was George Fabyan Professor of Comparative Pathology and professor of tropical medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, his scientific career was spent entirely at The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, later renamed The Rockefeller University. Dubos began his career in microbiology in 1927, when he joined Oswald Avery's laboratory at The Rockefeller Institute. In 1939, with the help of Rockefeller Institute biochemist Rollin Hotchkiss, Dubos isolated the antibacterial agents tyrothricin and gramicidin from the bacterium Bacillus brevis that killed or inhibited Gram-positive bacteria and tested their bacterial, chemical, and clinical properties. These antibiotics remain in limited use today. In 1942, before antibiotics were in general use, Dubos warned that bacterial resistance should be expected. In 1948, Dubos shared the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award with Selman Waksman for "their achievement in studies of the antibiotic properties of soil bacteria". He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1954 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1960. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he served as an editor of the Journal of Experimental Medicine from 1946 to 1972. In later years, Dubos explored the interplay of environmental forces and the physical, mental and spiritual development of mankind. The main tenets of his humanistic philosophy were: global problems are conditioned by local circumstances and choices, social evolution enables us to rethink human actions and change direction to promote an ecologically balanced environment, the future is optimistic since human life and nature are resilient and we have become increasingly aware of the dangers inherent in natural forces and human activities, and we can benefit from our successes and apply the lessons learned to solving other contemporary environmental problems.

Plate volume provided in facsimile in 8 1/2 x 11 inch folder with clear covers (reproduced from copy at National Library of Medicine). GEORGE MACARTNEY BUSHE (1793? - 1837) received his medical training in Dublin, and in 1828 assumed the chair of the Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey. After the College closed in 1830, Bushe turned from anatomy and physiology to surgery, specializing in disorders of the rectum and anus. Bushe died in 1837, the year of publication of his magnum opus, Treatise on the Malformations, Injuries, and Diseasess of the Rectum. It reflects his own experiences as well as knowledge gained from his vast library, including the best ideas of proctology from European sources. The eminent Howard Kelly of Johns Hopkins Medical School described Bushe's Treatise as "long considerred the ablest work on the subject in any language". -- Leon Banov, George Bushe, Author of the First American Book on Proctology, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum Vol. 16, pp 553-560 (1973). PROVENANCE: DR. WILLARD PARKER (1800 – 1884) was a surgeon of the United States, for many years a professor at the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons and other schools. He taught in district schools to obtain the means to enter Harvard College, where he graduated in 1826. He became the private pupil of John C. Warren, the professor of surgery at Harvard, and attended medical lectures in Boston. He received the degree of M.D. from Harvard in 1830. He was at once appointed professor of anatomy in Vermont Medical College, and in the same year accepted the chair of anatomy in the Berkshire Medical College, and in 1833 also that of surgery. In 1836 he was appointed professor of surgery in the Cincinnati Medical College, and afterward spent some time in the hospitals of Paris and London. In 1839 he became professor of surgery in the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons, which post he resigned after a service of 30 years. The operation of cystotomy for the relief of chronic cystitis, and also that for the cure of abscess of the appendix, are among his contributions to the art of surgery.

McSweeney's. Near Fine. 2013. First Edition; First Printing. 1938073592 . Near Fine / Near Fine. Back-cover sticker is present. This is the Indiespensable edition of "The Best of McSweeney's. The Indiespensable edition is supposed to be signed 6X: Dave Eggers, Jordan Bass, Andrew Sean Greer, Ben Jahn OR Peter Orner, Jess Walter, and Arthur Bradford. NOTE: Jordan Bass did NOT sign this copy. Apparently it slipped through. This is the only copy that I have seen missing any of the six signatures. There are two variants of this signing. Peter Orner and Ben Jahn both signed in the same spot. Each of them signed approximately one-half of the copies. This is the 'Ben Jahn variant'. The other five signatures were the same five people for all copies. Each of them signed in approximately the same place. Once in a while Jess Walter signed a bit higher up than his usual spot. Arthur Bradford signed toward the bottom-left-corner on a fair number of copies. It appears that this usually happened when Dave Eggers' signature was on the large side and shoved Bradfod off the page from his usual spot. This copy has the 'billboard, or 'black-and-white sign' jacket variant. The jacket variants are split approximately 50 / 50. Unfolded, the jacket is a double-sided poster. Half the jackets were folded with one side out, and the other half with the other side out. This copy is unusual, in that Walter signed higher up, between Greer and Orner; Bradford signed at the bottom-left-corner; and Jordan Bass did not sign at all. I've not seen another copy missing Bass' signature. Sadly, J.T. LeRoy was censored out of the Index of Contributors (complete list of author contributors for the first 41 issues of the Quarterly Concern (no love for the illustrators)). ; The Best of McSweeney's is a compilation of some of the best short stories, poems, comics, and artwork from McSweeney's. It is a great resource for anyone interested in contemporary writing and comics. .

Davis Company, Philadelphia, PA. 8vo (9 5/8" x 6 7/8"); 80pp; navy cloth over board, gilt lettering and border, onlaid b&w round photograph of a child; physician name on front "Geo. A.F. A premium baby book that was given to parents by the obstetrician or pediatricians on their first visit. It includes hints for promoting childhood health, including recipes, and normal growth and development milestones. This one includes the life of a child named Nancy Jane Anderson born in 1926 in Connecticut. The mother carefully recorded both the child's doctor visits and the milestones in the child's life through her high school years and into her acceptance at the University of New Hampshire in 1945. At the age of 12 Nancy Jane was bitten by a dog while riding her bicycle and the book records her anti-rabies vaccinations. Interesting as a childhood growth and development book and also to follow the life of a young girl into adulthood as recorded by her mother.
