Description
1699. First Edition. TYSON, Edward M.D. Orang-Outang, sive Homo Sylvestris: Or, The Anatomy of a Pygmie Compared with that of a Monkey, an Ape, and a Man. London: Printed for Thomas Bennet… and Daniel Brown, 1699. Tall quarto (9 by 11 inches), period-style full black morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and boards, red morocco spine label, raised bands, original endpapers retained. $16,000.First edition of Tyson's ""epoch-making"" anatomical study that laid a foundation for the theory of evolution, ""the first work to demonstrate scientifically the structural relationships between man and anthropoid ape"" (Norman), heralded as a ""forerunner of Blumenbach, Buffon, Huxley and Darwin"" (PMM), with eight striking copper-engraved folding plates. A handsome wide-margined volume.Orang-Outang is ""the earliest important study in comparative morphology… Tyson compared the anatomy of men and monkeys, and he placed between them what he thought was a typical pygmy—it was, in fact, an African chimpanzee, the skeleton of which survives to this day in the Natural History Museum in London… Tyson established a new family of anthropoid apes standing between monkey and man, and recognized that man was probably a close relative of certain lower animals. Popularized as the 'missing link,' the theory that man shares some remote common ancestry with the apes was not clearly expounded until the publication of Huxley's Man's Place in Nature in 1863 and Darwin's Descent of Man in 1871. Tyson did not foresee the theory of evolution; but his work contributed substantially to its formulation and in that sense he was a forerunner of Blumenbach, Buffon, Huxley and Darwin"" (PMM 169).Featuring eight splendid engraved folding plates ""drawn by William Cowper in the style of the Vesalian musclemen…Tyson's anatomy of the Orang-Outang… was the first work to demonstrate scientifically the structural relationships between man and anthropoid ape. A believer in the 'Great Chain of Being,' he identified the chimpanzee as the link directly below mankind, stating in his 'Epistle dedicatory' that it 'seems the Nexus of the Animal and Rational. Tyson's anatomical study—the first conducted of a great ape—had a powerful influence on all subsequent thought on man's place in nature"" (Norman 2120). It is widely seen as ""'an epoch making event' that had a profound impact on the methodology and practice of comparative anatomy and on the study of physiology as well as on the development of systems of thought that led to the rise of the theory of evolution"" (Brown, Homeless Men & Melancholy Apes,42).Orang-Outang also stands as ""the direct source of Buffon's examination of apes in his Histoire Naturell (1749-88)… In his volume on the nomenclature of monkeys [1766] Buffon meticulously translated Tyson's list of the differences/similitudes between men, orang-outangs and monkeys… Tyson's analysis was also central to the definition of the 'Homo Nocturnus' by Linnaeus"" (Hund et al, Simianization, 111- 12). ""In literature Sir Oran Haut-ton in Peacock's novel Melincourt, 1817, and the orang-outang in Shelly's Queen Mab, derive from Tyson,"" and scholars also trace Swift's depiction of Yahoos in Gulliver's Travels to Tyson (PMM 169). ""The last section of Orang-Outang is devoted to 'A Philological Essay Concerning the Pygmies of the Ancients,' an early and major contribution to the study of primate-oriented folklore"" (Norman 2120). Imprint opposite main title page. Containing separate title pages for Orang-Outang and separately paginated Philological Essay. Eight folding plates engraved by M. van der Gucht from drawings by William Cowper, bound between Orang-Outang and Philological Essay. With rear advertisement leaf. Krivatsy 12028. Wing T3598 (Wing T3596A is a ghost). ESTC R23265. Russell 825. Interior generally fresh with light scattered foxing; plates with minimal paper repairs, early archival tape reinforcement to versos with lightest dampstaining to one plate. A highly desirable copy of this seminal work in the history of science.

Description
1777. First Edition. (AMERICAN REVOLUTION) WEBSTER, Samuel, A.M. A Sermon Preached before the Honorable Council, and the Honorable House of Representatives, of the State of the Massachusetts-Bay, in New England. At Boston, May 28, 1777. Being the Anniversary for the Election of the Honorable Council. Boston: Edes & Gill, 1777. Slim octavo, period-style full tree calf gilt, raised bands, red morocco spine labe, marbled endpapers; pp. (3-5), 6-44. $4800.First edition of Webster's electrifying 1777 Sermon delivered barely ten months after America's Declaration of Independence, invoking God's wrath to put the British ""to flight speedily… make them quake with fear… and so return to their own lands… let them have neither credit nor courage, to come out any more against us.""When Samuel Webster delivered this crucial 1777 election sermon before the Massachusetts-Bay Council and House of Representatives, ""independence had been proclaimed, not secured. The bloodletting had just begun."" That same year Thomas Paine, in an public letter to Admiral Howe, warned him: ""In all the wars which you have formerly been concerned in, you had only armies to contend with. In this case, you have both an army and a country to combat"" (Atkinson, British Are Coming, 561-64). Mindful of his audience and the peril of the moment, Webster, a minister in Salisbury, Massachusetts, aimed ""biting sarcasm"" at the British, and made ""solemn appeals to the representatives of the people to be true to their trust"" (Headley, Chaplains and Clergy, 3).""From colonial times it was the custom of certain of the New England states to open each year's session of the legislature with an annual election sermon"" (Vail, Checklist). Drawing extensively on biblical sources, these sermons focus on the ""nature, purpose and character of government"" and the ""character of a good ruler"" (Cline, New England Election Sermons, 5-10). Here Webster, a Harvard graduate with a 1749 AM, firmly proclaims: ""conquests made by force upon an inoffensive people… gives no right… the business of all in power is to defend the lives, liberties and property of the people… and where there is any dispute, let nothing be done, till it is settled by the people, who are the fountain of power.""Webster directs his fiery eloquence at ""our furious brethren the Britons… who have begun the most desperate attacks on us."" He calls on God to ""put them to flight speedily… as the fire consumes the wood, and sometimes lays waste whole forests on the mountains, so let them be laid waste and consumed, if they obstinately persist in their bloody designs against us."" In his concluding words, Webster calls for ""a dreadful tempest to affright them… make them quake with fear; and pursue them with thine arrows, till they are either destroyed, or brought to see that God is with us of a truth and fighteth for us, and so return to their own lands, covered with shame and confusion… let them have neither credit nor courage, to come out any more against us"" (emphasis in original). First edition. Without half title. Evans 15703. ESTC W3240. Vail, 21. Sabin 10423. Text fresh with small closed tear to one leaf, beautifully bound.

Description
London: Chatto & Windus, 1887 First edition, first printing, with 32 pp. Chatto & Windus "List of Books" advertisement to rear dated "July, 1887." Signed by Stevenson on title page. Additionally signed on title page by 19th century American writer Eugene Field. Publisher's slate blue cloth, with spine lettered in gilt, borders of front and rear boards ruled in blind, black endpapers, and mostly unopened pages. Near fine, with a touch of rubbing to spine ends and corners of boards, contemporary novelist George Barr McCutcheon's bookplate to front pastedown, a couple of small closed tears to top edge of front free endpaper, a trace of rust from a paperclip to the first couple of pages, and light spotting to fore edge of text block. Overall, a wonderful signed copy. Housed in a custom green half morocco slipcase, and green chemise. Underwoods is Robert Louis Stevenson's second collection of poetry. The collection is divided into two sections - the first with poems in English and the second with poems in Scots. Stevenson prefaces the latter section with a Table of Common Scottish Vowel Sounds, a valuable resource for pronunciation of 19th century Lallans Scots. Notably, Underwoods features the first appearance of "Requiem," an enduring short poem that Stevenson wrote as his own epitaph. The poem goes: Under the wide and starry sky, Dig the grave and let me lie. Glad did I live and gladly die, And I laid me down with a will. This be the verse you grave for me: Here he lies where he longed to be; Home is the sailor, home from sea, And the hunter home from the hill." Eugene Field (1850 - 1895) was an American humorist and newspaper columnist who was known as the "Poet of Childhood." Field wrote many children's poems that were widely read in his day and into the early 20th century, such as "Little Boy Blue," "Wynken, Blynken and Nod," and "The Duel," (also known as "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat"). Notably, Robert Louis Stevenson was also well-known for his children's poetry, publishing the influential book, A Child's Garden of Verses (1885). George Barr McCutcheon (1866 - 1928) was a popular Indiana-born novelist and playwright, who wrote the classic Brewster's Millions (1902), about a man who must spend an inheritance of one million dollars within a year under strict conditions in order to be eligible for an even larger inheritance. The book has seen a number of film adaptations, perhaps most famously a 1985 version starring Richard Pryor and John Candy. . Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Modest extremity wear, title gilt bright. A bit cocked. T.p. with offset [see image]. Small semi-circular piece missing from fore-edge of leaf 6-1. Withal, a pleasing VG+ copy of a somewhat uncommon book in the trade."Jonathan Walker, known as 'The Man with the Branded Hand', was an American reformer who became a national hero in 1844 when he was trialed and sentenced as a slave stealer following his attempt to help seven runaway slaves find freedom. Walker was born in Harwich, Massachusetts. During his youth in Massachusetts, Walker learned to sail and became captain of a fishing vessel. In early 1837, he went to Florida and became a railroad contractor. The condition of the slaves interested him, and in 1844 Walker aided several of them as they attempted to make escape in an open boat from the coast of Florida to the British West Indies, where slavery had been abolished ten years before. After doubling the capes, Captain Walker fell seriously ill; the crew, being ignorant of navigation, would all have been drowned if a wrecking sloop had not rescued them and taken Walker to Key West. From there, he was sent in chains aboard USSÂ General Taylor to Pensacola, where he was put in prison, chained to the floor, and deprived of light and proper food. Walker later wrote about the degrading conditions inside the jailhouse and the brutality shown toward slaves there. Put on trial in federal court in Pensacola, Walker was convicted, sentenced to be tied to a pillory, and publicly branded on his right hand with the letters 'S S' for 'slave stealer'. He was also imprisoned and heavily fined. But to some it meant 'slave savior'. United States Marshal Eben Dorr, who also traded slaves, executed the branding with a hot iron. Walker was then returned to jail, confined eleven months, and released only after northern abolitionists paid his fine. For five years after his release, Walker lectured on slavery in the northern and western states. Walker was the subject of John Greenleaf Whittier's poem 'The Branded Hand'. Whittier heard about Walker after reading a book about him called Trial and Imprisonment of Jonathan Walker [i.e., the book here offered]. The poem praised Walker's actions. A plaque commemorating Walker was erected on the lawn next to the Harwich, Massachusetts Historical Society." [Wiki]

Description
1945. Reading, Pennsylvania factory photo archive documenting textile machinery production and hosiery manufacturing work, circa late 1940s to early 1950s, at or near the Wyomissing industrial complex associated with Textile Machine Works and Berkshire Knitting Mills. Reading became one of the major American centers for full fashioned knitting machinery after Ferdinand Thun and Henry Janssen founded Textile Machine Works in 1892, and the equipment seen here belongs to the world of stocking manufacture before seamless nylon hosiery reshaped the industry in the 1950s. Photo archive of 17 large silver gelatin photographs, each 8 x 10 inches, Reading or Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, circa 1940s to early 1950s. Rows of large knitting machines fill long factory rooms under fluorescent lighting; workers stand beside circular or braiding machinery marked with chalked Greek words; an engineering office includes men studying large technical drawings; machine tools, metal stock, exterior factory buildings, tanks, and utility structures place the scenes within a large industrial plant. Several versos are stamped "Paul Bauer, Photographer, 608 Franklin St., Reading, Pa." and "Photo by Paul Bauer." Several shop-floor views include a chalked Greek vocabulary list beside the machinery, a striking detail in a Reading industrial region that had an established Greek immigrant community by the early twentieth century. The archive records the machinery, workers, drafting practices, and plant environment behind Pennsylvania's textile machinery economy at the point when American hosiery manufacturing still depended on large, specialized mechanical systems and skilled shop labor. Documenting the production floors, machine details, engineering rooms, workers, and exterior plant views. Minor edge and curling; images remain clear and well preserved. Overall in very good condition.
