Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929 First edition, first printing, first issue dust jacket with Catherine Barkley's name misspelled as "Katharine Barclay" to front flap. Publisher's black cloth with gold paper labels lettered in black to front board and spine; in the original pictorial dust jacket with a drawing by Cleon. Near fine book, with a light smudge to top of spine label, gold labels very bright and unchipped, a touch of foxing to front joint, light rubbing to bottom edges of boards and bottom corners, light offsetting to endpapers, and creased top left corner of rear free endpaper; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine, shallow chipping to spine ends, bottom edge of front panel, and corners, a tiny bit of dampstaining to foot of spine, light rubbing to jacket folds and top edge of front panel, and a touch of spotting to rear panel. Overall, a lovely copy in an attractive and bright example of the iconic dust jacket. Hanneman A8. Set in Italy during World War I, A Farewell to Arms tells the story of a romance between the protagonist Frederic Henry, an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps, and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse tending to wounded soldiers. Widely considered one of the best novels to come out of the war, the novel is, as the first edition dust jacket proclaims, "the very essence of beauty as twisted and made tragic by war" that "expresses the innermost nature of war." Unlike many of the other war novels by contemporary writers, A Farewell to Arms addresses not only the aftermath of WWI but the events of the war itself, specifically the Italian Front around the Battle of Caporetto of Autumn 1917. Accordingly, it stood out amongst the war novels, becoming Hemingway's first bestseller, and establishing him as a premier American writer. Interestingly, in his 1958 interview with The Paris Review, Hemingway famously remarked, "I rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms, the last page of it, thirty-nine times before I was satisfied." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Oblong octavo (16x21cm); publisher's white staple bound wrappers printed in red and black; [1]ll. text followed by twelve (12) plates printed on rectos only. Margins a bit toned and rubbed from handling, brief splitting at spine ends; Very Good, internally fresh and sound. Rare artist's book by the Iraqi artist and architecture Akram Shukri (1910-1983). Born in Baghdad, Shukri traveled to London to study art at the Slade School in the early 1930s where he gained a reputation as a capable draughtsman in a plethora of different styles. His career as an artist and architect matured in the 1940s and 50s when he contributed to the exhibitions of the Iraqi Fine Arts Association, of which he was a member. He was honored with a solo exhibition in 1956. His training as an architect is especially showcased in this beautifully produced guidebook depicting twelve monuments of Baghdad, preceded by a brief key in English providing dates, functions, and styles for each landmark. The work was produced in collaboration with Memdouh Zeki, who also edited the "Pocket Guide to Baghdad" for the Times Press. NYPL only in OCLC as of March, 2026.

Octavo (19.25cm); brown vertically-ribbed cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine, triple-ruled border and decorative centerpieces stamped in blind to covers; pale yellow endpapers; [ii],[viii],179,[3]pp. Inscribed in pencil on the front flyleaf: "Hon. J. Collamer / With respects of The Author" (possibly Jacob Collamer, judge and U.S. Senator from Vermont). Tiny chip to upper left corner of rear endpaper, handful of dog-eared pages smoothed out, else very Near Fine. `. Handsome copy of this volume Hawthorne edited for his friend and patron Horatio Bridge (1806-1893), a United States Navy officer. First printed in wrappers in 1845, Journal is the narrative of Bridge's trip on the USS Saratoga, "the flagship of Commodore Matthew Perry, with the mission to stop and search all American ships on the west coast of Africa that might be carrying slaves. That mission was fruitless (they saw none), but Bridge's comments on the efforts of the American Colonization Society in Liberia and on Africa in general were vivid" (Moore, Margaret B. the Salem World of Nathaniel Hawthorne, p.135). An interesting printing, not noted by BAL - "What appear to be first-issue sheets with the Putnam title page intact, gathered in the same form as the Putnam publication, are also found in a typical Ticknor format A binding...When Ticknor and Fields bought the Putnam plates for Mosses and Cruiser at the Bangs Bros. Trade Sale in New York, March 1854, they may have acquired some Putnam sheets that were later bound up in Ticknor style and distributed in an effort to recover some of the purchase costs" (Note: CLARK A14.1.c1). Presentation copies uncommon, with only two noted in Rare Book Hub (PBA, 2019; Goodspeed, 1910). cf.BAL 7597.
