Description
London: J. Johnson, 1792. First edition. Near Fine. Octavo (leaves 207 x 122mm), collating: xix, 452 pp. An excellent, Near Fine copy. Full contemporary polished calf. Expert leather repair to joints and edges. Small bookplate to upper pastedown (initials "DDa") and small contemporary woman's ink ownership signature ("Moira") to margin of p. 9. A bit of toning to endpapers and occasional light foxing. Overall, a very fresh and handsome copy of one of the most important founding documents of Western feminism: "A rational plea for a rational basis to the relation between the sexes" (Printing and the Mind of Man). One of the founding documents of the women's equality movement, Vindication was radical in its rational and measured appeal to contemporary readers. Wollstonecraft used the structures of marriage and family to bolster her assertion that "if woman be not prepared by education to become the companion of man, she will stop the progress of knowledge, for truth must be common to all." By barring women from equally rigorous educations, society prevented women from rising to their full potential: as individuals as well as in their social roles, including those of of wife and mother. A signpost of Enlightenment thinking, Vindication applied wider political arguments to the existing systems of oppression operating between the sexes; in making marriage a microcosmic example of governmental tyranny, she uncovered its illogic and issued a call for the system's reconstruction within the rules of logic. "The divine right of husbands, like the divine right of kings, may, it is to be hoped, in this enlightened age, be contested without danger." And, indeed, she assures men that her intention is not to reverse the system by imposing a similar yolk upon them, but to bring equilibrium. "I do not wish women to have power over men, but over themselves." A text that is foundational to feminism as well as to humanist thinking. PMM 242. Feminist Companion 1180. Near Fine.

Description
One of the most important voyages ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge Six volumes. Octavo. 8½ x 5¾ inches. 410, [4] + [2], 418, [2] + [2], 435, [3] + [2], 417 [3], + [4], 454, [2] + [4], 412 [2]. Eighteen (of nineteen) engraved charts and views. Original leather boards with gilt rule and decoration on spine, black leather spine labels. General wear to each volume, particularly at corners and ends of spines, some hinges starting, some loss to spine of volume 1, last blank pastedown in volume 3 torn away, minor spotting to edges of textblock. Large folding map with two minor slits at folds, bound upside-down. Internally, bright and clean. Overall a very good set. Second, revised, English edition. An important voyage exploring the northwest coast of America and producing the first accurate charts of the area. The views include the Mission of San Carlos and the Presidio of Monterey, most likely the first published views of California. Also included is the important folding map of New Albion showing the California coastline from San Francisco to San Diego. George Vancouver, who had served with Captain Cook's second and third voyages, was made commander of a grand-scale expedition to reclaim Britain's rights, resulting from the Nootka Convention, at Nootka Sound; to thoroughly examine the coast south of 60º in order to find a possible passage to the Atlantic; and to learn what establishments had been founded by other powers. This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge. Vancouver surveyed the northwest coast, visited San Francisco and Monterey, spent the winter in the Hawaiian Islands, returned to California and visited San Francisco (again), Cape Mendocino, Bodega Bay, and Monterey. He again visited the Sandwich Islands, took possession of Owhyhee and then returned again to the northwest coast and on to Monterey. From there he set sail for England by Cape Horn. Vancouver died during the preparation of the work, and the final editing was done by his brother, John. Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2010. Limited Edition. Leather. New. Wiley, William T.. Both volumes octavos, Book I with 576 pages and Book II with 632 pages; Book I with 42 prints and Book II with 55 prints. The type is Centaur roman and Arrighi italic, handset and in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris. The size of the text type is 16 point, cast on a 14-point body, leaded two points, so that the effect is solid 16 point. The initial letters, a set of capitals intended for use with Centaur type, were drawn by Mallette Dean for the Grabhorn Press. For the prints, Wiley scratched the images onto negatives that were then directly exposed to make polymer plates that, when printed by letterpress, produce relief prints with the linear qualities of etchings. The type is printed in black, the initials in red-brown, and the illustrations in sepia. The paper is an all-cotton fiber sheet, especially made for this project by Mead Specialty Papers. The binding, done in-house, is hand-sewn, with hand-sewn linen headbands, a dark brown goatskin spine titled in gold, and tan goatskin sides, stamped in gold on the front board with a DQ monogram designed by Wiley. The slipcases have tan cloth edges, dark brown paper sides, and a dark brown paper label with titling in gold. Each Book issued in an edition of 400 numbered copies, plus 26 lettered copies hors de commerce, signed by the artist. When Edith Grossman's superb new English translation of Cervantes' novel was published in 2003, we immediately began to think about producing a fine edition of this masterpiece of world literature. Six years were to pass before we had an artist and the necessary permissions in place for one of the largest undertakings of Arion Press. The artist William T. Wiley was our choice, but he took some convincing, because he felt his pictorial work was too much in line with the satire of the knight and his squire. Finally he consented and produced ninety-seven prints for the two-volume set. Book I was produced in 2009 and Book II in 2010. Timing is everything. By the time the second volume was published, the Great Recession was in full swing. The large investment in paper, type-setting, printing, leather, and bookbinding was daunting. But we knew that this project was an important publication for Arion Press, so we pressed on. The project was satisfying; proofreading one of the most humorous books ever written was a joy. PLEASE NOTE: as of this writing, all of the bound copies have been sold. There are several copies remaining in sheets, which we are working on being bound in the same style as the original copies. Description
[Boston]: [Houghton Mifflin]. [1974]. The photocopied typescript of Stone's second novel, winner of the National Book Award and one of the best novels to link the impact of the Vietnam war on American society in the Sixties to the dark side of that era -- the official corruption and the underside of the drug experiences of a generation. Bearing the [now crossed out] working title: Skydiver Devoured By Starving Birds. The title appears in a scene in the novel; it also appears in Stone's memoir, in an account of his time working for a tabloid newspaper where the writers were given headlines made up by other writers and had to create stories around them. The one time it appeared in print was in the excerpt from Dog Soldiers that appeared in the newsprint literary magazine, Fiction, in 1973. Stone's piece was called "Starving Birds" and at the end was identified as being from "Skydiver Devoured by Starving Birds." According to a 1987 letter of provenance, this copy of the typescript was generated by the publisher and sent to the Book of the Month Club for early consideration for possible book club adoption. The pages bear, at the bottom, a torn Book of the Month Club filing sticker. 318 pages, plus cover sheet. The cover sheet and the letter of provenance are each signed by Robert Stone. The quality of the paper varies: several sheets have the blue tone of a mimeo. Near fine or better, in the bottom half of a manuscript box and the folding cardstock case of the Book of the Month Club, at this point more artifactual than protective. As far as we can tell, a unique copy of this award-winning novel, the basis for the highly regarded film Who'll Stop the Rain? No Binding. Near Fine.

Description
Fort Kearny, Ne: October 28, 1862. Very good plus.. [4]pp., on a single folded sheet of lined paper. Light wear and toning, old folds. An interesting manuscript letter written by Dr. George Lorin Miller (1839-1920), a leading Nebraska pioneer and instrumental figure in establishing Fort Kearny. Miller also served as the fort's sutler during the Civil War, and helped to recruit the First Nebraska Regiment. Miller was a physician, politician, editor and land owner who arrived in Omaha in 1854, the year the city was founded. Miller himself founded the Omaha Herald, which later became the Omaha World-Herald, and was. staunch Democrat who became adept at harnessing the power of the press. Here, Miller writes to an unnamed general in Helena, Arkansas, who was most likely Samuel Ryan Curtis. Miller's letter is well-written, providing insights into and details of the politics, war news, and other information of the period. He is friendly to his correspondent, noting that the two men had been political opponents in the past, but Miller states that he supported the candidacy of his correspondent as "Colonel of our Regiment because I believed you capable and patriotic." Miller praises him for being recognized by no less than the President for "gallant services authenticated as they were by the best officers of the service" and then bemoans the fact that the correspondent was denied an appointment by the Senate due to the "mendacious meanness" of a Nebraska politician named Samuel G. Daily, who apparently worked against his confirmation. Then Miller notes that Daily had to answer for his denial of the correspondent's appointment on the recent campaign trail, where Daily "had to meet your case in the canvass at every turn -- apologized, lied and smoothed it over as he best could. Denying everything and admitting nothing saved him by about 100 votes...." He continues to encourage his correspondent with supportive language, and then closes with a short appraisal of their shared hometown in the Nebraska Territory: "Omaha is changing much, but it will not outrun your recollection of it. When you return you will see, as I see, that it is a real home after all, however changed its appearance.

Good plus: moderately creased and edgeworn; a few lead and colored pencil scrawls and notations. This is an unrecorded plea to raise funds for the defense of an African American man on trial for murder. It is focused on his eviction and the “ruthless system of foreclosure which has already laid waste the happiness of thousands of Los Angeles families.” This pamphlet compellingly sums up the tragedy wherein “George Farley, 54-year-old American Negro, went on trial for his life”: “On February 17, 1938, Farley shot two men. They were deputy marshals who were putting George and Cora Farley out of the home they had worked all their lives for, the home they had lived in for fifteen years, the home they had lost through an inhuman assessment bond system which speculates in human misery.” Although the Farleys had paid off their home, a street assessment bond for $49 was issued in 1928; they made payments for four years, reducing the balance by half, but lost all source of income due to the Depression. Foreclosure set in, and a real estate broker sued for possession in 1938 – “Penniless, the Farleys were unable to hire a lawyer. Ignorant of legal procedure, they did not appear in court.” When police came to evict, “Farley acted as might anyone else driven mad from worry, illness, and fear.” A shootout ensued and two marshals were killed. Farley survived five gunshots and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in San Quentin. This pamphlet was issued by the “Farley Defense Committee” and declared that “If you are a small home-owner, an unemployed, a Negro, a workingman, or just a private citizen who opposes the crushing and ruining of human lives . . . you are interested in saving the life of George Farley.” Rare ephemera related to the Los Angeles housing crisis, the Great Depression and one African American man's tragic tale. A near-fine copy with a few small bumps at extremities and some light toning to sheet edges
Description
Lugano: Galleria Gottardo, 2006. A near-fine copy with a few small bumps at extremities and some light toning to sheet edges. Folio (11 x 11 inches). 144 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Pictorial boards. With a DVD in pocket on inner rear board. First edition. "Paradiso was born in an exploration of the spaces planned by architect Mario Botta and in an intuition of architecture as the art of rendering the void livable. This concept is linked to Silvio Wolf’s poetical understanding of the questions of absence, of the void, and of elsewhere, which recur throughout his photography and his multimedia installations.
