Description
1975. First Edition. Signed. (BOOTH, George) (GROSS, Sam) (MYERS, Lou) (WILSON, Gahan) (WITTE, Mike) (WOODMAN, Bill) (ZIEGLER, Jack) FISHER, Edwin, GERBERG, Mort and WOLIN, Ron, eds. The Art in Cartooning. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, (1975). Quarto, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $3200.First edition of this celebration of American cartooning, seldom found inscribed with original sketches by its contributors. This copy boasts large, whimsical and personalized original art by notable magazine cartoonists George Booth, Sam Gross, Lou Myers, Gahan Wilson, Mike Witte, Bill Woodman, and Jack Ziegler. A delightful copy.Celebrating the work of American cartoonists from the late 19th century through 1975, The Art in Cartooning collects over 300 examples of the form at its finest, drawn from the pages of The New Yorker and other magazines. Artists represented include Charles Addams, Peter Arno, Gahan Wilson, James Thurber, Rube Goldberg and many more. All of the seven cartoonists who have inscribed this copy with charming original work are represented in its pages, and most are best known for their contributions to The New Yorker. On the front pastedown, Gahan Wilson sketched a quirky half-figure, beneath which Bill Woodman redrew that half-figure and put it into action as ""a portable umbrella holder."" At the top of the recto of the front free endpaper, Jack Ziegler depicted one of the recipients painting a portrait of the other (addressed to Helga and Paul, ""neighbors""), and below that Mike Witte provided a large, wrinkly elephant with an appealing expression, saying ""I was gonna say something clever but for some inexplicable reason I forgot…"" The front free endpaper verso features a Lou Myers sketch inspired by his famous La Cage aux Folles poster: Helga and Paul posed standing together inside an oversized shirt, with Paul saying ""Help!"" and Helga blushing with the same red ink used to highlight Paul's turtleneck. On the half title, George Booth (whose work went rejected by The New Yorker for 20 years) portrayed himself as the victim of an editor wielding an oversized ""reject hammer"" while shouting ""Not funny, Booth!"" Sam Gross made the final contribution, decorating the contents page with an inscription to Helga and Paul above a figure pointing at the World War II and Post War section, saying ""KILL!"" Includes eight color plates. Dust jacket with minor discoloring to spine and back cover. Front pastedown and free endpaper with small drop of water damage, touching Witte's drawing without affecting its impact. An about-fine copy, very desirable with original cartoons by featured artists.

Description
1846. SHOBERL, Frederick, ed. Forget Me Not. A Christmas, New Year's, and Birthday Present, for MDCCCXLVI. London: Ackermann, (1846). Small octavo, contemporary full red morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and boards, watered silk endpapers, all edges gilt, gilt tasselled silk bookmark; housed in a custom clamshell box. $2200.1846 edition, the penultimate edition of this Victorian literary annual, featuring prose and poetry and ten engraved plates, finely bound with Queen Victoria's monogram in gilt. The literary annual was a particularly Victorian form, a literary collection—often lavishly illustrated and elaborately bound—intended to be given as a gift. The publisher Ackermann began issuing his annual, Forget Me Not, in 1822, and did so yearly until 1847; this is the penultimate edition in that series. The binding features Queen Victoria's monogram within a crowned ringlet with the motto of the Order of the Garter, ""Honi soit qui mal y pense,"" set within. The first selection in the volume, ""The Royal Guest,"" by American Lydia Signourney, is a poetic description of ""the visit of Queen Victoria to King Louis Philippe."" Faint marginal foxing to a few plates. About-fine condition.

Description
San Francisco: Arion Press, 2007. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 297 of 300 numbered copies of this deluxe edition of Eliot's seminal poem. There were also 26 lettered copies for complimentary distribution. This is the 79th publication from the acclaimed Arion Press. In the prospectus the book is described as the first illustrated edition of Thomas Stearns Eliot's most important work. This is a complex and elegant presentation of Eliot's literary masterpiece that he wrote in the aftermath of the carnage and violence of the first world war and the devastation of a global pandemic. The book is in sections described by the publisher as partitions. There first is an essay on the poem by noted poetry scholar, Helen Vendler. The poem is interspersed with, in detail and entire, the painting "If Not, Not" by R.B. Kitaj. Kitaj ( 1932 - 2007) was an American artist who spent much of his life in England. He had a significant influence on British pop art, with his figurative paintings featuring areas of bright color, economic use of line and overlapping planes which made them resemble collages, but eschewing most abstraction and modernism. Allusions to political history, art, literature and Jewish identity often recur in his work, mixed together on one canvas to produce a collage effect. [Wikipedia] In an essay by Marco Livingstone describing the poem, written by Kitaj in 1975-76 as an ambitious, mysterious and haunting work that occupies a key position in his history as The Waste Land does in Eliot's. Kitaj in fact took inspiration from Eliot's poem and stated that his picture bears a certain allegiance to it. The Waste Land was edited, designed, and produced by Andrew Hoyem at his Arion Press. The types are handset 18 point Bauer Bodoni for the poem with larger sizes for display and 12 point Bodoni Book for subsidiary text. Printed on Somerset Book for the text, with Mohawk Superfine for the pictorial pages, printed by color offset lithography. Bound in gray cloth with the title in brown on the front cover and the title, author, and artist on the spine. The binding and the text and pictorial pages are all in fine condition. Accompanied by the prospectus. Measures 12 x 12.5 inches. 68 pages. PRI/092024.

S. l. (Los Angeles, CA): The Landmarks Club, 1916. Softcover. First edition; 5 3/4 x 3 1/4; pp. 3-12; glossy, off-white wraps; a few faint crease lines to fore-edge and corners; very good or better condition. Official recognition of historical landmarks in California began in 1895, with the founding of The Landmarks Club under the leadership of journalist, historian, photographer, librarian, and historic preservation activist Charles Fletcher Lummis (1859 - 1928). Initially, the club's efforts were focused on the Spanish Missions, later to expand to other buildings and sites of historic interest. The pamphlet, published in the summer of 1916, presented the history of the club and its achievements to date. It also advertised "Candle Day" at Mission San Fernando, a charity event and celebration of the 147th anniversary of Gov. Portola and Father Crespi's expedition to the valley - the first white men to step foot in it - at which candles were sold and the money were to be used to repair the roof of the great church.

New York: The Dial Press, 1998. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Near Fine. 6x1x8. Signed by author. First edition. Signed by author without inscription on title page. 1 inch spot on top edge, jacket spine faded, UPC sticker on rear endpaper. 1998 Hard Cover. 304 pp. Author's first novel. Hers began as a simple Cow meets Bull story: she, Jane Goodall (no, not the Jane Goodall) was the single, overachieving prime-time talk show producer with her heart on the shelf; Ray was the young executive producer with the J. Crew good looks and, it seemed, a love life as lonely as Jane's. They met for drinks, fell in love (so she thought), and looked together for an apartment. Then suddenly, inexplicably, in only the third month of their post-copulatory phase, Ray Brown was gone. Not gone gone, but lost to a jungle of unreturned phone calls and unrequited love. When Jane, suddenly homeless, reluctantly moves in with Eddie Alden, her swaggering, womanizing coworker, she finds herself in the belly of the beast itself--the alpha male--and discovers, too, that she's not alone in the vast pasture of the brokenhearted. With a copy of Darwin's Origin of Species in one hand and a notebook in the other, Jane sets up base camp at Eddie's and begins her research--on Eddie's bizarre chase and flee rituals, on the always unlucky pairings of her best friends, David and Joan, and on her own love affair with Ray--all in a desperate attempt to unlock the mysterious methods of the male animal. Soon Jane has stacks of theories and a budding career as a pseudonymous sexual behaviorist. But conclusions, of course, prove elusive as love itself, and nothing is as simple as it seems in this whip smart, hilariously funny, and wonderfully wise debut novel about men, women, and the strange taxonomy of the human heart.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2002. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 5x0x8. Signed by author. First edition. Signed by author without inscription on title page. Minimal wear to corners, board edges slightly faded, otherwise an excellent copy. 2002 Hard Cover. 209 pp. A smart, deeply satisfying romantic comedy about a woman's obsession with the return of her fiance's ex. On the Delta Shuttle between New York and Washington, Elise finds herself sitting next to Donald - tall, with dark wavy hair, a big easy smile. She's left the world of women's magazines in Manhattan for graduate school in D.C. He's left investment banking to become a teacher. They are both unattached. They exchange stories. They fall in love. One year later they're headed for an April wedding. Storybook finish? Not quite. Donald has some serious baggage: an ex-fiancee named Adrienne. And she's not just any ex: she is "the mother of all exes." Yale educated, French extraction, ravishing, and she's just shown up in D.C. Adrienne is Elise's worst nightmare incarnate--and before too long her all-consuming obsession. Every man comes with baggage. But did it have to be her?
