The Hague: Adrian Vlacq, 1659. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. [Bound with:] De circuli magnitudine inventa. Accedunt eiusdem problematum quorundam illustrium constructiones. Leiden: Elzevir, 1654 Quarto: II. (8), 71, (1) p. Collation: *4, A-I4 FIRST EDITION of Huygens' landmark work on Saturn bound with the FIRST EDITION of Huygens’ work on the quadrature of the circle, “De circuli magnitudine inventa.”(1654). Very fine copies in contemporary vellum with a very pale damp-stain to leading edge of a few leaves. First work with 11 engravings in the text, several woodcut diagrams, and 1 folding engraved plate. Vellum scuffed and marked with minor soiling. The first edition of Huygens’ announcement of the discovery of the rings of Saturn and the planet’s enormous moon, Titan. The work was preceded by a one-sentence anagram by planted by Huygens in Petrus Borel’s “De vero telescopii inventore” (1655/56) to secure priority of his discovery. The title of the book reads “The System of Saturn, or On the matter of Saturn's remarkable appearance, and its satellite, the new planet.” Around 1654 Huygens and his brother Constantijn devised a new and better way of grinding and polishing lenses. In early 1655, the Huygens brothers completed a telescope with an objective focal length of 377 cm. (twelve feet), an estimated ocular focal length of 7.5 cm, and a magnification of about 50. The original objective of this telescope (0.32 cm thick, 5.7 cm diameter) is now kept in the Museum Boerhaave at Leiden. The telescopes constructed by Huygens were the best and most powerful of his time. On 25 March 1655 he directed his telescope towards the planets, first to Venus and Mars, later to Jupiter and Saturn. "With the first telescope he and his brother had built, Huygens discovered, in March 1655, a satellite of Saturn, later named Titan. He determined its period of revolution to be about 16 days, and noted that the satellite moved in the same plane as the ‘arms’ of Saturn. Those extraordinary appendages of the planet had presented astronomers since Galileo with a serious problem of interpretation; Huygens solved these problems with the hypothesis that Saturn is surrounded by a ring. He arrived at this solution partly through the use of better observational equipment, but also by an acute argument based on the use of the Cartesian vortex (the whirl of celestial matter around a heavenly body supporting its satellites.)" Bos, DSB VI.604 The ‘Systema Saturnium’ also describes the observations of the Orion nebula, discovered by Huygens in 1656. "Although Galileo had observed the peculiar shape of the planet Saturn, it was the advanced telescope construction and observation of Huygens that led to a correct analysis of its changes. In ‘Systema Saturnium’ the rings and satellites of Saturn were described, also the explanation of their appearance and disappearance, and a micrometer used in making the observations." (Dibner, Heralds) "‘Systema Saturnium’ opens with the preface to Prince Leopold. In this preface Huygens declares that Saturn, its ring, and its satellite forms a system which supports the Copernican system of a heliocentric universe. The preface is followed by an encomium to Huygens by Nicolaas Heinsius and a poem on the Saturnian system by Huygens's brother Constantijn. The main text begins with descriptions of Huygens's telescopes and some of his early observations of other planets, stars, and the Great Nebula in Orion. Then his discussion turns to the discovery of Saturn's moon and the determination of its orbital period around Saturn. "On page 34, Huygens begins the discussion of the changing and unusual nature of Saturn's appearance. He discusses earlier observations of the planet going back to Galileo, notes how these observations suffered from the use of inadequate telescopes, and goes into some detail on the hypotheses of Hevelius, Roberval, and Hodierna. After arguing against these explanations, Huygens offers his theory of a thick solid ring circling Saturn at its equator and in equilibrium under Saturn's gravitational force. He then goes into detail about how the plane of the ring is tilted 20 degrees to the plane of Saturn's orbit and that the ring maintains a constant orientation as the planet orbits the Sun. This means that the ring's angle changes with respect to us and thus explained the varying appearance of Saturn. When the ring was edgewise to the Earth it would seem to practically disappear and then slowly the angle would change and the rings would open themselves back up to us. The book ends with Huygens's observations of all the planets and his calculations of their sizes in relation to the Sun." (Ronald Brashear) The Magnitude of the Circle: “In his first publication, ‘Theoremata de quadratura hyperboles, ellipses, et circuli’, Huygens derived a relation between the quadrature and the center of gravity of segments of circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas. He applied this result to the quadratures of the hyperbola and the circle. In the ‘De circuli magnitudine inventa’(1654) he approximated the center of gravity of a segment of a circle by the center of the gravity of a segment of a parabola, and thus found an approximation of the quadrature; with this he was able to refine the inequalities between the area of the circle and those of the inscribed and circumscribed polygons used in the calculations of π. The same approximation with segments of the parabola, in the case of the hyperbola, yields a quick and simple method to calculate logarithms, a finding he explained before the Academy in 1666–1667.”(DSB).

Description
1869. CROS, Charles. Solution générale du Problème de la Photographie des Couleurs. 12 pp. Tall 8vo, 235 x 150 mm., bound in later three-quarter brown morocco over marble boards, the wrappers bound in. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1869. First edition. A fine copy of this landmark in the history of colour photography. "It is curious that he, working at the same time as Du Hauron, and absolutely independently, worked on three color photography. On December 2, 1867, he presented to the French Academy of Sciences a sealed package, containing a report of his experiments, which had as their object the production of the three separation negatives and their synthesis for three-color photography. He kept his process secret, however, until it became known that Du Hauron had patented his three-color process on November 23, 1868. It was only after Du Hauron published the first of a series of articles in the journal Le Gers (March 1869) on this same subject of three-color photography that Cros was induced to make his findings public. On February 25, 1869, Cros published in the French journal Les Mondes an article on the solution of the problem of photography in colors (entitled "Solution du probleme de la photographie des couleurs") which also appeared as a pamphlet." - Eder, History of photography, pp. 648--9. From the library of Arnold Crane. Purchased from Lucien Goldschmidt, with his handwritten note that it was bound by Huser. Some rubbing with loss to extremities.

Description
London: Methuen & Co, 1951. First thus. Very Good +. One Hundredth Edition", number 361 of 500 numbered copies, printed on handmade paper. A Very Good+ copy. Large quarto (11 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches; 298 x 235 mm.). [2, blank], xii, 178 pp. Twelve mounted color plates (including frontispiece), twelve black and white vignette chapter headings, and three other black and white drawings. Internally fine and fresh. Publisher's full white calf, smooth spine lettered in gilt. Small repaired split at foot of spine, neat ink inscription dated 1952 on front free end-paper. Grahame's famed children's novel, featuring the beloved Mr. Toad, Rat, Badger, and Mole. Grahame began writing the book in 1908 - in his late 40s -- after leaving his position as Secretary of the Bank of England. Much of the plot of The Wind in the Willows had its origins both in the bedtime stories Grahame had invented to tell his own son, and in Grahame's childhood experiences in Berkshire county. The book might not have been published if not for the efforts of President Theodore Roosevelt, who lobbied Methuen to release it. While reviews were mixed, the book became a classic. "This book was first issued on October 8th, 1908, since when it has been reprinted in a variety of editions, illustrated and unillustrated, 99 times. This one hundredth edition, published in 1951, is printed on handmade paper and is limited to 500 copies" (p. [iv]). Rackham's illustrated edition was originally by The Limited Editions Club in 1940 with sixteen color illustrations only, but not published in England until 1950 by Methuen. This is the first deluxe edition to have the twelve black and white vignette chapter headings, and the three other black and white drawings. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Riall, p. 200. Very Good +.

Description
Lawrence, Ks: Haskell Institute, 1930. Very good.. Three volumes: 112; 122; 124pp. Original pictorial bindings, earliest two volumes in wrappers with yapp edges, the latter in blue cloth boards. Some chipping to yapp edges, overall minor wear. Previous owner's signature on latter two volumes. A couple of inscriptions in latter volume. A consecutive trio of yearbooks from Haskell Institute, "a United States Government Training School for Indians" still located in Lawrence, Kansas, and known today as Haskell Indian Nations University. The works were printed by Haskell students evidenced by the following notice printed at the front of each volume: "The contents of this book put in type and printed by apprentice students of Haskell Institute." The present annuals document the student body, faculty and staff, campus life, and alumni information for the years 1928 through 1930. Though the student body is anything but typical, the yearbooks contain information typical of traditional high school annuals, including student portraits and information arranged by school class, rosters and group portraits of various clubs, music groups, and sports teams, and military groups, a calendar of school events, and more. The annuals also include vital information on hundreds of previous students with lists of names and addresses of the Haskell Alumni Association. These particular annuals belonged to A.A. Van Sickle, evidenced by his ownership signature on the latter two volumes. Mr. Van Sickle taught religion at Haskell, and is pictured along with the other religion faculty members in the 1930 annual. One of the volumes also includes a couple of inscriptions to Van Sickle from students. OCLC reports sparse holdings at just six institutions, but only one location, the University of Kansas, holds any of these three (the 1929 edition). A rare opportunity for an instant collection of Native American assimilationist yearbooks from an important government residential boarding school.

Mexico City: Impreso por J.MF. de Lara, 1836. Very good.. 20pp. Original tan printed wrappers. Minor wear and soiling. A substantial address by the president of the Mexican congress to the country's people in response to their losses in the Texas Revolution. Meaning to calm the country after the loss at San Jacinto and Santa-Anna’s subsequent capture, Congress assures the nation that the army shall lack for nothing and that victory is certain. The Congress further warns against U.S. ambitions, which they say seek to destroy Mexico from within and without by fomenting internal dissent and extending sovereignty over the entirety of North America. The Texans, meanwhile, are described as nothing more than amoral adventurers -- "Unos hombres sin fé, sin pátria, sin mas unidad que de ambicion." "Many pages are devoted to extolling the lofty traditions of Mexico and to calls on all Mexicans to unite in quelling the revolt of the Texans. The treaties signed by Santa Anna in Texas are said to have no effect and final victory over Texas is said to be certain" -- Streeter. Eberstadt 162:619. Palau 148995. Streeter Texas 859.

Bogota: Imprenta de la Republica por Nocomedes Lora, 1825. Very good plus.. [2],41pp. Original, printed self-wrappers. Light soiling to wraps. A few scattered fox marks and light toning. Colombian Vice President Francisco de Santander reports to congress on the successful conclusion of a desperately needed loan from bankers in England. This work contains his account of the negotiations, documents relating to the making of the deal, and copies of the terms of the loan. The London bank, B.A. Goldschmidt, would be destroyed by the Panic of 1825, which occurred shortly after the publication of this report. In turn, Colombia was forced to default on its debt in 1826. As with virtually all of the newly independent Latin American nations, Colombia struggled financially and was heavily reliant on foreign loans; several other countries in South America defaulted during this period as well. Laid in is a 2 page letter handwritten in ink by Ella Young - "Box 136, Oceano, Calif. July 1945 Dear Helen & Karl Klein, It is a great delight to read your letter and to have your greetings from that part of America which first welcomed and enchanted me. America is a living country in the sense that Ireland is living: a country where the mountains cry out to each other and the streams and rivers & forests make a vast music. It is for people such as you & Robert & Marie Lawson to interpret such a country, or rather to be initiated by such a country, and invited into its hidden realms and its sacred unseen cities. I count myself lucky to have lived in Ireland and to have known something of America. There is a book of mine "Celtic Wonder Tales" Dutton & Co. which contains fragments of the Celtic Myth of Creation. (The Universe taking form through successive invasions from the God-World). It has too ( much condensed) the famous Destruction of Da Dergas Hostel. Do you know "The Voyage of Bran Son of Febal" translated by Kuno Meyer published by David Nutt in the Strand London 1895. You should be able to get it from any good library. It is a saga that has always fascinated me. My greetings to you and to the Dawsons. I hope that you will write some again asap. Ella Young I am sending you by post a book of mine". The book which she sent by post is Very Good, tape residue to the endpages from the letter having been taped in, page containing the first poem in the book toned from newspaper clipping obituary laid in, boards soiled. A wonderful treasure for the collector of Ella Young !.

New York, 1912. FIRST EDITION. Complete with index and errata, frontispieces, memorandum slip tipped in at page 257 in Vol. III. With 27 colored plates (after J. Wolf, Smit and Keulemans), and 135 black and white plates. Original blue buckram, gilt lettering on spine; despite some fading on the biding, a fine, clean copy from the libraries of University of Kansas with its blind-stamp on the title page of Vol. I and Dr. James M. Dolan Jr., director of collections for the San Diego Zoological Society, with his blind-stamp on all title pages. First edition of one of the greatest works on the classification and taxonomy of the Primates order in a period when no institution in the world contained a collection sufficiently large to permit a work like this. Over a period of five years, Elliot analyzed and reviewed all the existing primate species and subspecies, here describing about six hundred species. He travelled extensively to visit the museums and zoological gardens of Europe and the East, including the British Museum, the National Museum of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, and the Natural History Museum in Calcutta. The author offers first a general review of the species and order, with its literature and geographical distribution, then a full description of each with measurements is provided as well as an account of their habits. Elliot notes that the illustrations of the skulls have been enabled with the new methods and instruments invented by the special photographer of the American Natural History Museum, Mr. Abram Anderson. The colored illustrations are a selection from those published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London by his friend, artist Joseph Wolf. Elliot (1835-1915), an American zoologist, was one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He produced a number of works on ornithology and comparative zoology, working with illustrators such as Joseph Wolf, Joseph Smit, and the celebrated J.G. Keulemans. Elliot concentrated on the study of mammals after the publication of his Monograph of the Bucerotidae, or family of the hornbills in 1882. He was also curator of Zoology at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, a position he began in 1894.

Description
Albany: Weed, Parsons and Company, 1863. Original printed front wrapper [rear wrap lacking; gum label remnant, light dusting]. Stitched. 27, [1 blank] pp. Perforation stamp and rubberstamp number. Good+. "A careful constitutional analysis in advocacy of the proposition that the property of 'Southern Rebels' might be confiscated and applied toward payment of the debt incurred by the War" [Eberstadt]. With a different opinion, an early owner of this pamphlet has written on the verso of the front wrapper: "This pamphlet is a delightful instance of the effect of fanaticism upon a really learned & accomplished man. The abominable doctrines expressed in it never met with any approbation [legally] except from one Underwood a Yankee schoolmaster who was elevated to the bench by Lincoln." Underwood is John C. Underwood, "one of the most conspicuous antislavery activists in Virginia during the 1850s, one of the first members of the Republican Party in Virginia, a federal judge from 1863 to 1873, and the president of the Constitutional Convention of 1867-1868" [Encyclopedia of Virginia]. In the absence of any significant constitutional history of the prohibition on bills of attainder-- legislative rather than judicial determinations of guilt, tainting the rights of the traitor's heirs-- Wilson resorts to English practice and considers the way in which the language of the prohibition was understood by the Founders. He and Foot laud the care with which the Founders protected individual rights, and conclude that the Confiscation Act is constitutional. 109 Eberstadt 31. Bartlett 5884.

Description
[Alpine, MI: Chas. W. Bergman, 1910]. Octavo (19.5cm); staplebound self-wrappers; [16]pp. A hint of wear and toning to wrapper extremities, else Near Fine. Tucker's oft-reprinted essay, first published in the anarchist journal Liberty in 1888. Of this odd little reprint, we can say little other than that it is scarce (OCLC gives 4 locations) and that this appears to be the only publication ever to have appeared under the "Chas. W. Bergman" imprint, which appears under the Price List on upper wrapper verso. The brief introductory essay by Bergman mentions a few suggestions for further reading, from the publication dates of which we deduce a date of ca. 1910.

Richards. Part of Signature Books' Essays on Mormonism series. In Line Upon Line, sixteen thoughtful, compelling essays offer reflective historical discussions of the development of Mormon doctrine from the statements of church leaders to the writings of LDS theologians to canonized scripture, rather than on the authors' personal speculations. Noting the relative strengths and weaknesses of various theological or doctrinal teachings due to limited human understanding, the contributors suggest that differences of opinion can indicate the presence of genuine and sincere faith that God's truth is nevertheless present in scriptural metaphor.
