Description
Mt. Pleasant, Iowa: Home Journal Job Print, 1866. Printed broadside, 24 3/8 x 18 1/2 inches, employing several sizes and styles of type, including large display and ornamental bold types (to 3 1/4 inches), an appealing typographical tour-de-force, featuring extra-large bold type in a well-designed layout. Printed by a small town newspaper in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, located about 75 miles south of Davenport. The "Home Journal" was published from 1856 to 1866; this broadside has the look of the 1850s. Aside from the periodical press, little else seems to have been printed in Mt. Pleasant, 1850-1870. This broadside not recorded on OCLC. A little wrinkled, but no wear, an attractive broadside, suitable for exhibition. Untrimmed as issued, old folds. (7166). A large and attractive early Iowa broadside, advertising what must have been a charming entertainment: two little girls, Bella and Jennie Simpson, nine and eleven years old, assisted by two adult males. We could find no other references to the “Singing Birds." Child performers were a regular feature of 19th century American popular entertainment. Some of those acts achieved national success; this one may have remained local. The only other reference we found for McClure was a notice in an 1864 Virginia newspaper for a concert given by him in Waynesboro.
