Description
1896. First Edition. HARDY, Thomas. Jude the Obscure. (London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1896). Octavo, original gilt-stamped blue-green cloth, top edge gilt, uncut. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and half morocco slipcase. $2200.First edition, first issue, of Hardy's last work of fiction, with map and lovely frontispiece etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn, in original cloth. The copy of Frank J. Hogan, with his morocco-gilt bookplate.Jude the Obscure ""was begun as a serial story in Harper's Magazine at the end of November 1894, and was continued in monthly parts. But, as in the case of Tess of the d'Urbervilles, the magazine version was for various reasons abridged and modified in some degree, the present edition being the first in which the whole appears as originally written"" (Webb, 83). The novel was received with mixed reviews due to its disturbing content and implications that it was autobiographical. Burned by a bishop and banned for its ""indecency,"" Jude became Hardy's last work of fiction (Smith-Seymour, 547). First issue, with Osgood's name on verso of title and gilt-stamped on spine. Mixed first and second state (mostly first), with seven of the first eight signatures containing page numbers on the partially blank pages; mixed states are very common (Purdy, 87). Purdy, 86-91. Sadleir 1108. Sterling 456. Wolff 2979. Hogan Catalogue Part II (April 24, 1945), item 357. The copy of esteemed collector and attorney Frank J. Hogan (1877-1944), with his morocco-gilt bookplate laid in. Owner pencil signature.Ink stains to pages 68-69; a few pages roughly opened. Cloth clean, gilt bright. A handsome, near-fine copy with excellent provenance.

Description
Paris: Chez Pierre Franç. Didot le Jeune, 1767. FIRST EDITION. Original leather with gilt spine and marbled paste downs; light foxing throughout, but overall a clean, good copy.  . First edition. Considered one of the most important works in the history of cell theory, Bordeu “described connective tissue - under the name mucous tissue - showing its role in exchanges, the phenomena of nutrition, and the mechanical equilibrium of organs and tissues” (DSB, II, p. 301). This work followed his earlier Recherches sur les maladies chroniques (1775) in which he “conceived the idea of internal secretion by his hypothesis that every organ, tissue, and cell discharges into the blood products which influence other parts of the body” (G&M, 1117). Born into a family of French doctors, Bordeu (1722-1776) worked at the Royal Infirmary at Versailles, was the physician to the Countess du Barry, and close friend of Diderot. He was a representative for “vitalism,” a philosophy of living distinct from chemical and physical forces, advancing a concept of sensibility as something distinct both from mechanical forces and from conscious mind or soul. Bordeu played a major role in eighteenth century clinical medicine and in the history of medical theories.

Dayton, Nevada: Tree By the River Publishing, 1990. Signed Copy. Soft Cover. Very Good. 6x0x9. Signed by author. Signed by author on title page without inscription. Minor wear to corners. 1990 Soft Cover. 197 pp. Though Americans usually associate Mark Twain with Tom Sawyer and the Mississippi River, Samuel Clemens actually began his serious writing careers as a reporter for the Territorial Enterprise at Virginia City, Nevada in 1862. Contrary to Clemens' well told story about his curious pen name, "Mark Twain" had nothing to do with his life on the river, and more to do with his drinking habits while in Virginia City. Having lost his high paying job as a river boat pilot on the Mississippi due to the outbreak of the Civil War, in 1861 Clemens tags along with his brother Orion to Nevada Territory. For a year Clemens prospects at several mining camps trying to strike it rich. He fails and goes broke at Aurora, Nevada. Having contributed a series of humorous letters to the Enterprise, editor Joe Goodman offers Clemens a reporting post in the then booming silver mining town of Virginia City. It is Clemens' first full time paying writing job. Four months later Clemens is writing as Mark Twain.--rear cover
