Description
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1902. The Paumanok Edition. Limited to 300 numbered sets printed on Ruisdael hand-made paper (of which this is #92), signed by the publisher. Ten large octavo volumes (236 x 166 mm) occupying approximately 18 1/2 inches (47 cm.) of shelf space. Publisher's three-quarter dark green morocco over marbled boards ruled in gilt. Spines lettered and decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments in a floral design, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. Etched and photogravure frontispieces and plates, with descriptive tissue guards. A Fine set. Journalist, essayist, and poet who revolutionized American literature with such poems as I Sing the Body Electric and Song of Myself, which asserted the beauty of the human body, physical health, and sexuality. "Always the champion of the common man, Whitman is both the poet and the prophet of democracy. The whole of Leaves of Grass is imbued with the spirit of brotherhood and a pride in the democracy of the young American nation. In a sense, it is America's second Declaration of Independence: that of 1776 was political, this of 1855 intellectual" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Here, drawn together in a beautiful binding, are some of Whitman's most influential and important works. Myerson B4.

Tipped-in color portrait frontispiece and twelve full page illustrations including a facsimile letter. A fine Cosway-Style binding ca. 1940 by Bayntun Rivière (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in). Full red crushed levant morocco, both covers with a geometrical design in gilt. The upper cover with a fine oval portrait miniature set under glass of John Keats surround by an elaborate gilt floral design. Spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt. Decorative gilt board-edges and turn-ins, Cockerel liners and endleaves, all edges gilt. housed original felt-lined red cloth clamshell case, spine lettered in gilt. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever: Its loveliness increases, it will never pass into nothingness." The creator of some of the most famous lines in English verse, Keats' works are odes to the timelessness of the idea of beauty, even as its reality fades. Among his core themes are the tension between man's mortality and the immortality of his muse, and the role art plays in assisting the creation of a lasting legacy. Sir Sidney Colvin (1845-1927) was an English curator and literary and art critic. As the author and editor of this "Life," he hoped to blend the biographic with the poetic to enhance readers understanding of Keat's work. It was published in honor of the hundredth anniversary of the publication of Keat's first volume (Preface). George Bayntun (1873-1940) was the founder of Bayntun Bindery (1894) dedicated to using traditional hand-crafted techniques and high-quality materials. "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" (Princeton). Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939, transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery," which is still in existence and family owned. Although named after the English miniaturist Richard Cosway (1742-1821), the desirable "Cosway Binding" with its jewel-like portrait miniature set into a fine binding was first developed at the turn of the century by J.H. Stonehouse, director of London's Henry Sotheran Booksellers. Their miniatures were painstakingly crafted by the talented painter Miss C. B. Currie (1849-1940). As the style grew in popularity, other publishing houses quickly began to reproduce this technique-each developing their own desirable take on the aesthetic-referred to as "Cosway style.". Fine.

Description
Albuquerque: Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems, 1976. First edition. Very Good. FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION. This landmark work marks the birth of the commercial software industry, a critical moment in the digital revolution. Gates' letter is the software equivalent of Steve Jobs' prescient insight, on the hardware side, that personal computers could be a mass market consumer product for everyday people and not merely diverting contraptions for tech-savvy hobbyists. "Bill Gates saw the need for software to be a product unto itself, especially software that could be coded once and executed on a variety of computers. In 1976, he wrote an open letter to the hobbyists at the Homebrew Computer Club, encouraging them to stop sharing software, specifically commercial software." (Campbell). In the early and mid-1970s the personal computer industry did not yet exist, but there were enthusiastic hobbyists who, using kits like the Altair 8800, were able to assemble and program their own machines. "There was no distinction between programmer and user, and certainly no meaningful distinction between hardware and software. As in the early days of computing, the code was the machine in a real sense. And code was something you naturally collaborated on and shared...And so it came as a shock when in February 1976, Bill Gates released "an open letter to hobbyists" about copying software" (Weber, p. 36). "Gates, all of twenty years old, penned his full-throated statement of purpose to the computer world, "An Open Letter to the Hobbyists". This was Gates' 95 Theses nailed to the church door." (Good, p. 14). Published the same year that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak introduced the Apple-I computer, Bill Gates' "Open Letter" was revolutionary in attacking the hacker-ethic that prevailed at the time, arguing that the piracy of software was crippling the development of quality software written by professional programmers. The debate sparked by Gates' "Open Letter" led to dramatic changes in how software was developed, brought to market, sold, and, crucially, protected from theft, including the introduction of end user licenses. "The idea of retail software in microcomputers was novel, and it required legal protection. The protection came in the form of the End User License Agreement (EULA), which changed the definition of ownership of software: You never actually own software, just a limited license to use it." (Campbell) Copies of these early 'hobbyist' computer magazines are notoriously scarce, especially in this condition. A note on the printing history: Gates's letter appeared in the Homebrew Computer Club Newsletter for January 31, 1976 which likely preceded this appearance in Computer Notes by a few days. The Homebrew issues, however, were Xerox'd pages distributed among a very small group of people and copies are now legendarily rare. The Computer Notes printing is generally considered the "first published" edition - even listed as such on Microsoft's timeline of their history on their official website. GATES, BILL. An Open Letter to Hobbyists. In: Computer Notes, vol. 1, no. 9, February 1976, p. 3. Albuquerque, NM: Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems, 1976. Large newspaper format (398 x 291 mm), pp. [ONE], TWO to TWENTY. A spot of foxing in the margin of the first leaf (not affecting Gates' text) folded once for distribution. In handsome custom box with leather label on front board and spine. A beautiful, well-preserved copy. RARE. Vintage gelatin silver print measuring 7 x 13 inches dry mounted to Hi-Art Illustration Board measuring 9 x 15 3/8 inches, signed in pencil by the photographer on the mount below image, lower right. Illustrated on page 93 of The San Francisco Book, (1948) and plate 26 in The Photographs of Max Yavno, (1981). Yavno, a student of documentary photography and the social landscape, started his career in photography during the late 1930s working for the Works Progress Administration in New York City. Like many young photographers in New York during the late 1930s, Yavno was drawn to the meetings of the Photo League where he became close friends with fellow members Consuelo Kanaga and Aaron Siskind. He was president of the League between 1938 and 39. After World War II, Yavno moved to Los Angeles. In 1947 he received a book contract from Houghton Mifflin to photograph the urban scene of San Francisco. The publisher decided to publish a book on San Francisco inspired more by the traditions of the WPA Guide Series of the 1930s than the influence of the local chambers of commerce or the tourist industry. Yavno was hired to provide his decidedly working-class vision for The San Francisco Book, 1949. The success of this book lead to the publication of a second book of Yavno's photographs titled, The Los Angeles Book published in 1950.

Description
California, 1855. Quarter plate ambrotype measuring 3 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches, with Vance’s embossed identification to mat, housed in a black thermoplastic case. Case split at both hinges, image fine. Very Good. Robert Vance was one of the first photographers to document California’s gold rush, taking over three hundred images of California that were shown in 1851 in New York (and since lost). He operated a studio in San Francisco at Sacramento and Montgomery Street. This image, of an unidentified subject in formal dress, was likely taken in 1855-1856, when Vance began taking ambrotype portraits.
