Thompson, Ralph Steadman's artistic style is immediately recognizable. This attractive portfolio, assembled in 2000, presents a work published in the year of his "big break" (RalphSteadman.com) - 1970 was the year of his infamous Kentucky Derby coverage, and his first meeting with Thompson. The subject of THE DOGS BODIES is one that Steadman has returned to throughout his career, including his frenetic label designs for Flying Dog beer. 9'' x 6.75'' (booklet); 10.5'' x 9'' (portfolio). Original pictorial wrapper, saddle-stapled. Illustrated in black and white. [16] leaves. Signed by Steadman to second leaf. Housed with two-color silkscreen, signed by Steadman and numbered 11 of 70. Spine somewhat worn, boards slightly scuffed; corners bumped, minor edge wear. Text block cracked and loosening. Contemporary ownership inscriptions in front endpapers. Light tanning and dust soiling. Attractive salesman's sample for this contemporary, nationalistic account of the Spanish-American War in both Cuba and the Philippines by Henry F. Keenan. Keenan was a Indianapolis journalist and novelist, perhaps most known for his anti-capitalist novel, The Money-Makers (1885). The complete edition of the present work is substantially more pro-American in its account of our conflict with Spain in the late 19th century. This sample represents two binding options -- embossed quarter sheep and cloth on the front board, and illustrated, stamped cloth on the rear. The front endpapers illustrate deluxe full and half morocco options. Although the subscription leaves are blank, a female owner, Maud Evans of Fairfax, Vermont, has inscribed her name twice in the front end leaves. A nice example of the genre, containing a good number of the illustrations.

Very Good. 350; 297pp. Octavo [22 cm] 3/4 red leather with brown paper over boards, hubbed spines, and gilt stamped titles on the spines. All edges gilt. Spines darkened. Extremities moderately rubbed. Underlying boards peeking through at the corners. Lengthy contemporary notations in pencil on the preliminary pages of both volumes. Contemporary owner's name on the front flyleaves. Thomas Pennington was born in Deal, Kent in 1761. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1775 and was awarded the degree of B.A. in 1780. Shortly thereafter, he embarked on three continental excursions. He is also known for being an extremely active promoter of vaccination at the time.

Schoenberg's String Trio, Op. 45, was commissioned by Harvard for a symposium on music criticism, and premiered May 1, 1947 by members of the Walden String Quartet. It was written shortly after Schoenberg suffered a major heart attack, which influenced the tone of the work. "The single-movement work is divided into five sections: three "parts" and two "episodes." Part three begins like Part one and recapitulates aspects of the whole work. Thematic development is spread throughout the work. The piece ends with a 12-note statement in the violin in which the basic motifs are presented. The variety of surface details (abrupt dynamic contrasts, expressionistic string effects, variations in tone) stand in contrast to the rigorous serialism that undergirds the work's structure."
