Description
Cambridge: University Press, 1927. FIRST EDITION VOL. 1, SECOND EDITION OF VOLS. 2 AND 3. Original blue cloth, exteriors faintly rubbed and small tear to bottom edge of second volume, still an excellent set. Volume 1 from the library of Thomas Fiske (1865-1944), professor of mathematics at Columbia, and stamp in Volume 3 of René de la Vallée Vital of Brooklyn. First edition of Volume 1, second edition of Volumes 2 and 3. The greatest single contribution to logic to appear in the two thousand years since Aristotle was the result of the collaboration of two great philosophers and mathematical logicians, Whitehead (1861-1947) and Russell (1872-1970). Inspired by Giuseppe Peano’s and Gottlob Frege’s invention of a new ideography for use in symbolic logic (which contradicted the Kantian doctrine of a separate philosophy of mathematics), the authors attempted to set up a still better system of logic on which to base mathematics. This effort reached its climax with the publication in 1910-13 of the three-volume Principia mathematica, now considered a historic masterpiece of mathematical architecture. DNB, 1941-50, pp. 952-954 (Sir Edmund Whittaker); DSB, XIV, pp. 302-310; Slater, Bertrand Russell, A Collection, 16.

Description
Paris, 1880. 6 double-image photographic stereoscope cards with contemporary watercolor, mounted on printed card stock (88 x 175 mm.). Housed in the original hinged box with chromolithographed top panel and advertisements printed on the interior. In excellent condition. Complete set of 6 erotic stereoscope views featuring women in states of undress performing their toilettes: brushing their hair, bathing, toweling off. The images are made up of albumen prints on tissue paper, with watercolor painted on the versos and additional tissue paper backing, resulting in sepia toned pictures that transform into color images when held to the light. Some of them are also embossed, so that tiny pinpricks of light show through such elements as lace and fans. When placed into the stereoscope, these cards would create a three-dimensional vignette that only the person holding the instrument could see. This set is part of a series called Nos Mondaines created by the Parisian photographer Adolphe Block. All the sets show partially clad women performing normal daily activities.

About Very Good
Description
[2]+514+[4 contents and errata]+[2] pages with 2 folding maps, lacks frontispiece. Small Quarto (10" x 7 3/4"). Rebacked in the 19th century leather, retaining the original spine with raised bands and gilt decorative stamping and lettering to spine. Translated from the original Portuguese manuscripts by Jackim le Grande. First edition.Born in Lisbon, he entered the Order of Jesus at the age of sixteen. In 1621 he was ordered as a missionary to India, and in 1622 he arrived at Goa. With the intention of proceeding to Abyssinia, whose Negus (emperor) Segued had been converted to Roman Catholicism by Pedro Páez, he left India in 1624. He disembarked on the coast of Mombasa, and attempted to reach his destination through the Galla country, but was forced to return. In 1625 he set out again, accompanied by Mendez, the patriarch of Ethiopia, and eight missionaries. The party landed on the coast of the Red Sea, and Lobo settled in Abyssinia as superintendent of the missions in Tigre. He remained there until death deprived the Catholics of their protector, the emperor Segued. Forced by persecution to leave the kingdom, in 1634 Lobo and his companions fell into the hands of the Turks at Massawa, who sent him to India to procure a ransom for his imprisoned fellow-missionaries. In this he was successful, but could not induce the Portuguese viceroy to send an armament against Abyssinia. Intent upon accomplishing this cherished project, he embarked for Portugal, and after he had been shipwrecked on the coast of Natal, and captured by pirates, arrived at Lisbon. Neither at this city, however, nor at Madrid and Rome, was any countenance given to Lobo's plan. He accordingly returned to India in 1640, and was elected rector, and afterwards provincial, of the Jesuits at Goa. After some years he returned to his native city, and died there January 29, 1678.Lobo wrote an account of his travels in Portuguese, which appears never to have been printed, but is deposited in the monastery of St. Roque, Lisbon. Balthazar Telles made large use of the information therein in his Historia geral da Ethiopia a Alta (Coimbra, 1660), often erroneously attributed to Lobo (see Machado's Bibliotheca Lusitana). Lobo's own narrative was translated from a manuscript copy into French in 1728 by the Abbe Joachim le Grand, under the title of Voyage historique d'Abissinie. In 1669 a translation by Sir Peter Wyche of several passages from a manuscript account of Lobo's travels was published by the Royal Society (translated in Melchisédech ThévenotRelation des voyages in 1673). An English abridgment of Le Grand's edition by Dr. Johnson was published in 1735 (reprinted 1789). In a Mémoire justificatif en réhabilitation des pères. Pierre Paëz et Jérôme Lobo, Dr. C. T. Beke maintains against Bruce the accuracy of Lobo's statements as to the source of the Abai branch of the Nile. See A. de Backer, Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus (edited by C. Sommervogel, iv., 1893).Condition:Old stamp and inscription on title page, first folding map conspicuously restored, second map tear restored else a very good copy, notes to front end paper in period pen else about very good.

Description
Letter. Very Good +. A prophetic, full-page 1937 TLS from Rabbi Stephen Wise warning of the increasingly "precarious status of Jewish life throughout the world". Citing the swirling winds of war in Europe and the rising signs of anti-semitism in America, the letter (which accompanies a separate signed letter of the Yiddish translation) urges the strengthening of AJC and "planned, consistent action". Also included is important ephemera on this matter, a "Resolution of Affiliation" application, a "Procedure of Affiliation with the American Jewish Congress" form letter and attending envelopes and an index card ("We will welcome your speaker on...."). Rabbi Wise's tone in the letter is firm and unmistakable: "We write to invite you to unite in our program of action at this time by affiliating yourself with the American Jewish Congress as a supporting member organization. We shall be glad to make the purposes of our organization clear to your membership by sending a speaker to any metting which you may designate". All letters and other ephemera are very well-preserved and are in crisp, bright, VG+ to Near Fine condition.

Description
Paris: Henry Babou, Editeur, 1933. Limited Edition. Paperbound books in collective slipcases. Very Good. Softcover volumes in original portfolio wrappers. Contents publshed as unbound signatures and laid into the portfolio wrappers. Almost of the individual portfolio wrappers have a glassine jacket. The volumes in this set are further protected in 7 slipcases, and a single internal chemise. The cloth slipcases are still sturdy and serve their purpose but show some fading and wear and are no longer handsome. The exposed portions of the chemises have faded and have some stains while the sides of the chemises which are inserted in the slipcase still have attractive blue sidesThe slipcases contain 2-4 volumes and have the names of the artistes du livre printed on the narrow visible portion of the chemise that is visible. We assume that this was done for a former owner or bookseller who assembled this set. This assembled set may have originally included an 8th slipcase and chemise containing the two missing volumes. This method of protection appears to have worked well since most of this volumes are almost as new.The two missing volumes from this set are Nos. 22 on LeGrand (1931) and No. 24 on Touchet (1932). Seventeen of these volumes are identified in their colophons as Copy No. 181 and four others are numbered between 51-700 and printed "sur velin blanc" out of a total edition of 750-850. Copies numbered 1-50 of each volume were printed "sur papier du Japon" and contained a "reproduction d'une Aquarelle by that Artiste du Livre. 50-150 copies, depending on the volume, numbered I-L or up to I-CL in roman numerals were also published -- our volume of Chimot in this set is numbered C -- that volume also has no protective glassine jacket).

first edition, octavo, 22 pages, stitched, untrimmed as issued, several corners dog-eared, short tears into foredge of titlepage and first leaf of text, else in very good, clean condition. Daniel Webster headed the Committee which prepared this Memorial to Congress; its members also included George Blake, Josiah Quincy, James T. Austin, and John Gallison. The Memorial contains Webster's earliest printed expressions concerning Slavery which grew out of the Crisis over Missouri's admission to the Union. Webster supported a Congressional ban on new slave states. The Boston Memorial expressed Webster's opinion that Congress was constitutionally empowered to exclude slavery in new States. Webster later, fearing dissolution of the Union, pulled back from this position when he supported the Compromise of 1850. Webster's arguments in the Memorial became the philosophical doctrine of Free Soilers and Republicans in the 1840s and 1850s. Dumond p. 29, LCP Afro-Americana Catalog, 6623, Sabin 47707, Work 330

Sothern, Alla Nazimova, Ellen Terry, Julia Marlowe, Anna Held, George M. Decorative touches on the cards are pure Art Nouveau! The cards, or some of them, were obviously once pasted into an album, and evidence of this is sometimes present on the card backs. Description
Glasgow: Blackie and Son, 1887. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. SCARCE IN THE US. British forces invaded and occupied Egypt in 1882 to put down a revolution hostile to foreign interests. British forces remained there to prevent possible intervention of another European power, especially along the Nile. The British government negotiated agreements with the Italians and the Germans to keep them out of the Nile valley, but the French wanted Britain to withdraw from Egypt. The tension continued for many years, encompassing France's efforts to develop a canal route through the Suez. In this four-volume publication, Archer traces the antecedents to the conflict and the first several years of the life of the conflict. The volumes were published by the famous publisher, Blackie and Son, in Glasgow. No publication date is present in any of the four volumes, but historical records suggest that they were released separately between 1885-1887. In Volume I of this set, there is a Preface by the author that is dated February 1887, which suggests that the four volumes in this set were published simultaneously. In the Preface, the author writes, "It is not for the writer to say that he has succeeded ... [but] he has already the happiness of knowing that, when three out of the four volumes were issued, they were well received ...", indicating that the first three volumes were initially published earlier. This is an interesting near-contemporaneous depiction of one of the most critical episodes in the history of the British empire. Small quarto. Four volumes in two bindings. Vol. 1, 288 pages; Vol. 2, 288 pages; Vol. 3, 272 pages; Vol. 4, 264 pages, plus index. Numerous photographic plates and illustrations throughout. Three-quarter green leather binding over maroon cloth boards. Leather on spines has faded to brown. Gilt title in maroon leather on spines; raised bands on spines. Some scuffing to leather and boards, especially at corners and edges. Marbled edges to text blocks. Pages are slightly yellowed but clear and bright. Previous owner's bookplate to front inside covers. ENGHIST/051525.

Description
Minneapolis, MN: Graywolf Press, 2022. First printing. Paperback. New. 110pp. Octavo. [23cm]. Illustrated wraps. "Shaped around moments of puncture and release, The Rupture Tense registers what leaks across the breached borders between past and future, background and foreground, silence and utterance. In polyphonic and formally restless sequences, Jenny Xie cracks open reverberant, vexed experiences of diasporic homecoming, intergenerational memory transfer, state-enforced amnesia, public secrecies, and the psychic fallout of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Across these poems, memory—historical, collective, personal—stains and erodes. Xie voices what remains irreducible in our complex entanglements with familial ties, language, capitalism, and the histories in which we find ourselves lodged. The Rupture Tense begins with poems provoked by the photography of Li Zhensheng, whose negatives, hidden under his floorboards to avoid government seizure, provide one of the few surviving visual archives of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and concludes with an aching elegy for the poet’s grandmother, who took her own life shortly after the end of the Revolution. This extraordinary collection records the aftershocks and long distances between those years and the present, echoing out toward the ongoing past and a trembling future.

Description
Washington (DC): Corcoran Gallery of Art. Softcover. Good, some yellowing and smudging to cover, otherwise excellent. White wraps with black and red text. 6 unnumbered pages. 4 bw illustrations. "This exhibition presents the work of four vital young artists living in the Washington area. These artists, Michael Clark, Robert Newmann, Carroll Sockwell and Ken Wade, have each chosen different expressions involving stringently constructed forms. I have been personally interested in the work of these artists for over a year, and feel that they are representatives of a new and dynamic generation in Washington. I am indebted to Thomas Downing and to Esther Stuttman for introducing me to the work of Robert Newmann and Carroll Sockwell, respectively."
