Description
[Pennsylvania]: Unknown publisher., [ca.1790]. Edition Unknown.. As issued.. Good with some marginal tears; overall toning; blank vertical margin irregularly trimmed (no loss); partial separation of some old folds; overall toning.. Broadsheet. It meas. appx. 348 x 210 mm. A rare and unusual PA German broadsheet with contemporary green and red color highlights. The broadsheet is adorned with woodcuts of angels with the verse and text printed within a large and ornate framework of flower and leaf blocks. The flowers and architectural ornamentation are highlighted in red with green wash. The broadsheet also bears a printed address or 'seal' on the verso (also in highlighted color); the address text is a variant of the located copy. It appears as if the broadside was meant to be rolled and presented so that the seal would appear as an address to the recipient. The text lauds the birth of a child and the hopes for the dearly loved new life with assurances of a mother's love. In text, presentation, and printing the broadside is dramatic. It is printed on laid paper. There is a watermark that is most difficult to discern because of the over printing and coloring. It does appear, however, to be #PM 46 in Gravell. This is the Berks County, PA. paper mill of Isaac Copeland that ceased business in 1790. None of the illus. or decorative blocks used in the broadside are known to Reilly. The broadsheet meas. appx. 8.5 x 14 inches. Gottingen German Broadsides Database #912; absent from Evans, Arndt, S & S etc. The presentation is derivative in form from the German "Taufenpatenbrief or Godparent's letter" broadsheets of the 18th century. "It was customary in Germany for godparents to send their godchildren painted, handwritten, or printed good luck wishes on the occasion of their baptisms. These folded paper objects often contained small coins, and served as both a certificate of blessing and as religious instruction for young children: illustrated with scenes related to the meaning of baptism, they were preserved for the child's edification when he or she reached an appropriate age. In the 18th century printers developed a gamut of formats for these delightful paper-toy documents, which are now understandably rare." (See: Taufenpatenbrief or Godparent's letter, 1781, published by the Graphic Arts Collection at the Firestone Library at Princeton: https://graphicarts.princeton.edu/2017/02/02/taufenpatenbrief-or-godparents-letter-1781/). Description
1757. First Edition. (FRANKLIN PRINTING) BARCLAY, Robert. The Anarchy of the Ranters. BOUND WITH: PIKE, Joseph. An Epistle to the National Meeting of Friends in Dublin. Philadelphia: Reprinted, and Sold by B. Franklin, and D. Hall, 1757. Small octavo (4-1/2 by 7 inches), contemporary full brown speckled sheep rebacked, red morocco spine label; custom cloth slipcase, pp. viii, 111, (1); (2), 23, (1). $4800.First American edition of this collection of two key Quaker works, published by the printing firm of Benjamin Franklin and David Hall “on behalf of the Society of Friends” (Miller 655), featuring Scottish-born Barclay’s influential Treatise on Christian Discipline, issued under its original title of Anarchy of the Ranters (1676)—“one of the most impressive theological writings of the century”—with An Epistle (1726) by Irish-born Quaker Pike, rare in contemporary sheep.By the mid 1750s Benjamin Franklin had become a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly, effectively beginning his career in revolutionary politics and furthering his position, with David Hall, as a preeminent printer in the colony. The Assembly was then ""dominated by Quakers, who… were often at odds with the family of the Proprietors""— thereby sharing much of Franklin's growing dispute with the Penns over the Assembly's powers (Isaacson, 154). This scarce publication of two major Quaker works, printed by Franklin and Hall ""on behalf of the Society of Friends,"" speaks to the political ties between Franklin and the Quakers, as well as the signal importance of these writings (Miller 655). Authored by Scottish-born Robert Barclay, Anarchy was first published in Latin in 1676 and in English in 1678 (as A Treatise on Christian Discipline). It remains ""one of the earliest formal statements of the position of the Society of Friends, and in many ways it remains the most important and impressive of Quaker manifestos. It stands in its own right, however, as one of the major theological works of an age much given to theological writing"" (Magill, Masterpieces, 527). Barclay, who served from 1682-88 as governor of East Jersey, a colony within present-day New Jersey, here refutes attacks on Quaker practices by contrasting ""the internal government of the Quakers with the anarchy of the Ranters [radicals during the English Civil War], and the hierarchy of the Romanists."" Initially controversial, Barclay's Anarchy soon ""rose into such favor among the Society of Friends, that its title was changed, at one of its yearly meetings, to A Treatise on Christian Discipline (1678) and it became the standard authority"" (Penny Cyclopaedia of the Society III:442). To critic Leslie Stephen, this work is ""one of the most impressive theological writings of the century."" Accompanying Barclay's Anarchy is Irish Quaker Joseph Pike's Epistle to the National Meeting of Friends in Dublin. Pike, like Barclay, had accompanied William Penn on a European trip and was well known to Quaker founder George Fox, who described Pike as ""zealous for truth, and sharp against apostates"" (Leadbeater, Biographical Notices, 174). The year this work was published, Franklin would depart Philadelphia for London in early April, after a meeting with Hall in which he ""drew a red line over all such accounts in this book, as are either settled or not like to be recovered"" (Hawke, 158). Pike's Epistle, also known as Dress and Worldly Compliance, first appeared in Dublin in 1726: in an edition similarly collected with Barclay's Anarchy. Franklin and Hall also published each work in separate editions the same year, no priority established. As issued with separate title pages showing the same imprint, separate pagination and continuous signatures. Miller 655. Campbell 591. Evans 8008. Allibone I:117-20. Lowndes, 113. See Evans 7840, 11661; Sabin 3363, 62825; Hildeburn 1516; Wing B718, B720. Interior generally fresh with light marginal dampstaining.

Description
[Havana]: Moises V. Codina, 1908. Good plus.. Seven broadsides, each approximately 22 x 7.25 inches, plus one double bill, measuring about 22 x 15 inches. One broadside printed in red and black. Previously folded. Scattered , shallow tears from edges, not affecting text, with some tape repairs on blank versos. A group of eight playbills spanning eight consecutive days in July 1908 that advertise performances and events at the Gran Teatro Payret in Havana. The theater was built by its namesake, Jaoquin Payret in 1877 on a corner across from the Villanueva Railway Station (now the Capitolio Nacional de la Habana), and initially focused on opera and high-class performing arts to compete directly with other established theaters in the Cuban capital. The building had five floors and a capacity of 2,300, but the upper balconies collapsed in 1882, after which the theater changed hands and began to showcase more varied, popular offerings. These playbills publicize an array of performers, including the ballet dancer Millas; a cabaret artist, Eline Oreo; a magician and telepath, Sidney Richards; Troupe Montrose, a group of acrobats, an Italian dance troupe, Les Casettas; two clowns named Pito and Chocolate; and many others. Notably, the programming also includes a heavy rotation of short and feature films, such as La Electricidad Liquida (1907); El Inagarrables Pick Pocket (1908); Victima de la Ciencia (1907); En Chine: Voyage sur le Canal Impérial (1908); and Venganza del Dervich (1907). The playbill for Thursday, July 16, with its headline and date in red, proclaims the debut of Trouppe Merodia, a seven-person group of acrobats and cyclists, as well as the Cuban premiere of a film titled La Caza de Oso (The Bear Hunt). The theater was closed by hurricane damage in 1926, but reopened as a cinema in 1935, and in the following years became known as the "Cathedral of Spanish Cinema." The building again fell into disuse and disrepair in the decades following the Cuban Revolution, but was restored in 2008. A very interesting group that gives a great sense of day-to-day operations at one of Cuba's most important and historic theaters.

London & New York: Hodder & Stoughton, 1921. First thus. Fine. Edition deluxe, number 77 of 500 copies, numbered and signed by the artist. A fine copy. Small quarto (10 x 7 5/8 in; 254 x 193 mm). 75, (3) pp. Illustrated with three full-page mounted illustrations in color with tissue guards and twenty-three drawings in black and white. Publisher's cream cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial end papers, top edge gilt. Eden Phillpotts' A Dish of Apples is a poetry collection celebrating the seasonal and pastoral, with a particular emphasis on the fruits of harvesttime. Phillpotts (1861-1960) was an English novelist, poetry, and dramatist known for his Dartmoor cycle and the novel Widecombe Fair. Fred Gettings sees the painting-like illustrations in this book as evidence of Rackham's maturing style, although readers will still delight in his mischievous elves and fairies amongst bucolic scenery. Phillpotts wrote of Rackham's illustrations: "I am immensely pleased at the charm & originality of your most attractive drawings. The humor of them especially drew me" (Hudson). Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Latimore and Haskell, p. 54. Riall, p. 144. Gettings, p. 179. Hudson, p. 170. Fine.
