Description
Odessa: Tip. Tovarishchestva "Bratia Kulberg', 1884. Softcover. First edition, n. d. (ca 1884); 9 1/2 x 7 1/4; pp. 37; pink wraps faded to dark yellow, illustrated with wood engravings; small loss of paper to tips of spine; crease to upper right corner; illustrated with drawings; overall very good condition. In English and Russian. An uncommon survivor of the 19th century, the catalog was published strictly for the Russian market of one of the biggest British manufacturers of agricultural machinery and general engineering products from the late 18th until the end of the 20th century. The enterprise was started by Robert Ransome (1753-1830) in the 1780s, when he was casting ploughshares in a disused malting in Ipswich and discovered, entirely by accident, chilled casting - the process of hardening a metal's surface by initiating contact between molten metal and cold metal. By 1851 export trade was initiated, including opening a branch establishment in Odessa, and by the early 1900s it would become much more important than the home market, with more than four-fifths of the threshing machines and steam engines sales being exported abroad. The catalog contains drawings and descriptions, on facing pages and both in English and Russian, of spare parts for the company's steam threshers. Not in OCLC or in the trade (as of January 2015).

Description
[Providence], 1855. Folio, 25 manuscript pages in ink of accounts; stiff marbled paper wrappers; very good. An account book from the provisions business of Schofield & Rhodes in Providence. The business opened in 1855, at 118 Benefit Street with investments in foodstuffs and clothing from Thomas Harris Rhodes (1800-1876) and Albert G. Schofield (b. 1809). The account book shows items such as flour, sugar, tea, raisins, molasses, coffee, cotton sheeting, calico, etc. and the names of the purchasers. Albert Schofield was apparently the same business man and teacher who founded Schofield's Commercial College at 81 Westminster Street in Providence in 1846. His college was successful and lasted a number of years. Rhodes was a bank cashier at State Bank at the time the two went into business together. The business struggled early on since an accounting dated July 1, 1856, shows an overall loss of .45. They began with an investment of about $8000. The last three pages of the book are copies of promissory notes; " Providence, RI. March 1, 1856. $210. Sixty days from date for value received I promise to pay to the order of Scholfield & Rhodes Two Hundred and Ten Dollars at the Arcade Bank Providence. Ralph Stodard." Several dozen financial interactions are shown.
