Description
1851. STEPHENS, Henry Louis. The Comic Natural History of the Human Race. [iii]-viii, [9]-216, [2] pp., illustrated with the original front wrapper chromolithograph bound in as frontispiece plus 39 chromolithograph plates of hybrid caricatures, and a final black and white vignette by L. Rosenthal after original drawings by Stephens. 4to, 260 x 170 mm, bound in contemporary three-quarter morocco. Philadelphia: S. Robinson, 1851. First edition of this extremely scarce American satirical colour-plate book, with depictions of various well-known Philadelphia figures of the day; the plates were executed in colour-printed lithography, heightened with contemporary colouring, "all showing birds, animals or fishes with human heads and faces, many of them obviously public figures, male and female, of the 1850 period. The drawings were by Henry L. Stephens and the lithographs by Rosenthal. The accompanying text was by many minor authors. One gets the impression that the book must have been very diverting in its day" (Bennett). The book features a self portrait of Henry Louis Stephens himself on the frontis, and goes on to include figures such as William Burton (comedian), Miss Mary Taylor (actress), Henry Clay, P.T. Barnum, Edwin Forrest (tragedian), Mr. Rice (the originator of negro minstrelsy), Mr. Speel (former owner of the Chinese Museum in Philadelphia), Woodside (the celebrated painter), Colonel Wallace (newspaper editor), Séguin (leader of the Seguin Troupe), Driesback and Rockwell (the lion tamers), Cornelius Mathews (writer), Henry Clay Sr. (American statesman), Richard Vaux (Philadelphian politician), Emilie Schaumburg Hughes-Hallett (society figure), Robert King (printer of this book), and Samuel Robinson (publisher of the book), and many others. The work was originally issued serially (in eight parts). Minor damage to the margin of the first plate, but unlike most copies there is just a little foxing at the beginning, whereas most copies appear to be foxed throughout, since book was printed on poor quality paper. A very desirable copy of an extremely rare book. Bennett, p. 101. Hamilton 1213 ("scarce and amusing"). Not in Reese.
