New York: By George Forman, for Cornelius Davis, 1799. [2], 396 p. Contemporary sheep, with a lovely red morocco owner's label on the front cover, "I. VanLiew | 1801." Small piece torn from top margin of H1 costing several letters in running head, moderate foxing, else a very good, tight copy. In 1798 Elizabethtown's Shepard Kollock printed the Entertaining, Moral, and Religious Repository for New York publisher Cornelius Davis. The work--in two volumes but with each volume complete in itself--is a collection of about fifty moralistic tales and includes the first appearance in America of a number of the Cheap Repository tracts of Hannah More and others. The work sold well, and by 1799 Davis needed additional copies to keep the market supplied. New York printer George Forman reprinted volume 1, while Kollock continued to supply volume 2 until he, too, needed to reprint. Evans 35297; Welch, American Children's Books, 361.5; ESTC W31909.
