Description
28/07/1843. Dickens actively used his celebrity and cash to aid charitable institutions. In 1843, Charles Dickens was involved in charitable and professional committees, most notably forming a committee to raise funds for orphaned children. Late in the year, he worked on “A Christmas Carol”, which was published in December 1843.Autograph letter signed, from his home at 1 Devonshire Terrace, July 28, 1843, to J.F. Rogers, thanking him for his interest in one of the organizations with which Dickens was working.. The recipient was possibly related to Samuel Rogers, the banker-poet who Charles Dickens held in high regard, dedicating his 1841 novel The Old Curiosity Shop to him as a ""faithful friend"".“I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, and in the name of the committee to thank you for it. We cannot suggest any mode by which you can advance any object we have in view. But should any means of doing so occur to you, I need hardly add that we shall be happy to add the smallest contribution to the common stock.” Clearly, Rogers’ offer to help was not in the form of a financial contribution, but that is what Dickens requests.A fine letter relating to his charitable work, written the year he published “A Christmas Carol.”

Description
[New York]: The Limited Editions Club (printed by Heritage Printers, Inc.), 1990. Limited Edition. Leather bound. Fine. Hejduk, John. No. 122 of 375 copies, quarto size, 193 pp., signed by John Hejduk, with LEC Monthly Letter. German writer Thomas Mann (1875-1955), a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, is best known for his novels and short stories employing symbolism and examining the psyche of those in intellectual circles, most famously in his works "Buddenbooks" and "Death in Venice". He wrote "The Black Swan" in 1954, and the novella revolves around an aging woman who must deal with her changing body and the expectations of an uncaring society that values youth over old age. Noted for being one of the first works to utilise hard medicine in the narrative, "The Black Swan" is here published by the Limited Editions Club, with lithographs by celebrated architect and artist John Hejduk (1929-2000), who brings an architect's eye for symmetry and simplicity in his geometric imagery. This edition includes an afterword by David Shapiro (b. 1947), a prolific poet and literary critic, whose first book was published when he was eighteen; offering insight and a sympathetic view of the brutality and bluntness often found in Mann's prose, he writes "A master of X-ray, [Mann] leads us to the master montage of disease itself. And to the possible health of love." ___DESCRIPTION: Full brown leather, title in black on the front board, black endpapers, lithographs printed in two colours by John Hejduk throughout; Monotype Gill Sans, mouldmade Rives Buff Text paper, quarto size (12" by 9.25"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-183 [184-186] [1 colophon], one of 375 copies, this number 122, signed by John Hejduk on the colophon. With LEC Monthly Letter, a thirteen-page softcover booklet, with two staples at the spine. In a slipcase covered in black cloth. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; spine is very slightly sunned, else fine. The LEC Monthly Letter is near fine, clean overall with a few stray marks, the text block is sturdy, without wear except at the corners and a small nick on the top edge of the rear cover. The slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean, with some minor fraying to the cloth, otherwise free of wear. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is a large and heavy book, and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. London: Printed for Henry Colburn, 1824. A New Edition. 235 x 145 mm. (9 1/8 x 5 3/4"). xxiii, [1] 351, [1], ciii, [9] pp. Original brown paper boards, printed label on spine, edges untrimmed. With folding facsimile letter frontispiece. Pastedown with bookplate of Thomas Fothergill Esq. of Kingthorp; front free endpaper with gift inscription to Fothergill from Conyers Hudson dated 1824; occasional marginal pencil markings. Randolph, p. 109. Upper joint with short split at head, tail of spine with tiny tear, light stain on front cover, corners rubbed, light offsetting to title and frontispiece, other trivial defects, but AN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE COPY, with only the most negligible imperfections. In its extremely well-preserved publisher's binding, this edition of the popular though controversial memoir of the author's friendship with Byron contains the first full publication of one of Byron's poems. Thomas Medwin (1788-1869) was a cousin and friend of Percy Shelley, who introduced him to Lord Byron, and in 1820, after Medwin had completed a tour of duty in India with the 25th light dragoons, he accepted an invitation by Shelley to visit him and Byron in Italy. The three spent much of 1821-22 at Pisa writing and conversing. Medwin recorded their discussions in his journal, and in 1824, after Shelley's and Byron's deaths, he published his record of those conversations--despite the objections of Mary Shelley and others (particularly Byron's mistress Lady Caroline Lamb) on the grounds that the information included was too personal. Their publication met with immediate success. Ours, the "new edition," was the third edition, published a few months after the first. Francis Lewis Randolph tells us that this third edition includes the first full publication of Byron's poem "The Irish Avatar." Byron, a supporter of Irish independence, composed these verses in September of 1821 critiquing the warm reception the Irish people and politicians had given King George IV on a state visit to Ireland. He was inspired by his friend Thomas Moore's "Lines on the Entry of the Austrians into Naples, 1821," which angrily condemned the Neapolitans for the failure of the Neapolitan Revolution. The present copy is from the library of Thomas Fothergill of Kingthorpe in the North Riding of Yorkshire. John Conyers Hudson, who gave him this book, had married a relation, possibly Fothergill's sister, in 1817; this relationship is supported by the fact that his papers, held at the Hull History Centre archives, include a series of letters from Fothergill to Conyers Hudson and his wife, detailing his travels and his will. While we have been unable to locate much information about Fothergill, he was evidently an excellent caretaker of his books: this copy in its original boards has come down to us in exceptionally fine condition.

By the early 1950s the community in Lakewood had considerably grown and was actively assisting displaced persons entering the United States from DP camps in Austria and Germany and purchasing hundreds of acres of remote forest land in order to resettle the wave of compatriots. The community was formally recognized in 1953 and named New Kuban after the Kuban region in the North Caucasus, where many of the families had lived. The first issue of 'The All Cossacks Journal' was published in 1946 and ran until 1954. Description
San Quentin, California, 1938. Single 6 ½ x 8 ½ inch photograph, caption affixed verso and marked verso “CALIF - STATE - PRISON SAN QUENTIN, CALIF”. Folded at middle, marginal wrinkling and small tears; fine contrast, very good to excellent.. A press photograph looking into the gas chamber at San Quentin Prison, taken following the execution of Albert Kessel (1909–1938) and Robert Lee Cannon (1908–1938). The pair were the first to be executed at San Quentin using that method; they were two of five men executed for their role in an attempted escape from Folsom Prison that caused the death of warden Clarence Larkin and a guard. The photo’s caption reads in part: “Into these two black chairs, Albert Kessel and Robert Lee Cannon were strapped today in the state’s first execution with use of lethal gas. A few seconds later the door was shut and made airtight; witnesses lined around the window and then the deadly cyanide eggs released.” In 1994, the use of cyanide gas was ruled cruel and unusual and banned in California, to be replaced by lethal injection; in 2006, a court order halted capital punishment in the state altogether, though it is still legal.

New York: G. Schirmer, 1967. Soft Cover. Very Good. 0x0x0. Wrappers, top edge, and a few pages lightly foxed. 1967 Soft Cover. xlv, 241 pp. Edited and with an introduction by Arthur Mendel. "The Passio secundum Joannem or St John Passion is a Passion or oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, the older of the surviving Passions by Bach. It was written during Bach's first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed on April 7, 1724, at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church. The structure of the work falls in two halves, intended to flank a sermon. The anonymous libretto draws on existing works (notably Brockes') and is compiled from recitatives and choruses narrating the Passion of Christ as told in the Gospel of John, ariosos and arias reflecting on the action, and chorales using hymn tunes and texts familiar to a congregation of Bach's contemporaries. Compared with the St Matthew Passion, the St John Passion has been described as more extravagant, with an expressive immediacy, at times more unbridled and less "finished". The work is most often heard today in the 1739 - 1749 version (never performed during Bach's lifetime). Bach first performed it in 1724 and revised it in 1725, 1732, and 1749, adding several numbers. "O Mensch, bewein dein Sunde groß", a 1725 replacement for the opening chorus, found a new home in the 1736 St Matthew Passion but several arias from the revisions are found only in the appendices to modern editions.
