Description
Florence: Typis regiae Celesitudinus, apud Petrum Antonium Brigonci, [1701]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio (330 x 238mm). [24], 164, 128pp., 3 leaves of engraved plates by Giovanni Antonio Lorenzini (2 are double leaves) depicting one of Galileo’s bust, 2 double-page of Galileo’s house, woodcut diagrams throughout. Later mottled calf, spine gilt (lightly spotted; rubbed). First Edition of Vincenzo Viviani’s first written but last published work. Viviani was an Italian mathematician and scientist. In 1639, at the age of 17, he was an assistant of Galileo Galilei in Arcetri. Viviani remained there as his disciple until Galileo’s death in 1642. Throughout his life, one of Viviani’s main interests was in ancient Greek mathematics. As early as 1646, while collaborating with his mentor Evangelista Torricelli, Viviani was working on a project to restore the work of Aristaeus the Elder (c.370-c.300 B.C.). Aristaeus’ work is believed to have been the first methodical exposition of the curves discovered by Menaechmus, and was entitled Five Books concerning Solid Loci (Solid Loci is the Greek term for conic sections). The book had entirely been lost; however, Pappus of Alexandria (c.290-c.350) later indicated propositions from the work which aided Viviani in reconstructing the contents. It was a project that Viviani worked on for most of his life. In 1673 he published an edition of his restoration but he continued to work on it and his final effort, this copy, De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica… was published in 1701, only two years before his death. Carli and Favaro 400; Cinti 167; Riccardi II, 629.9

Boston: Printed by John Wilson and Son, 1854. 8vo.  230 x 145 mm., [9 x 5 ½ inches].  xxiii, 298 pp.  Original brown embossed cloth; piece of spine missing.  Ownership signature of 'James A. Woolsen of 7 Bowdoin Square' appears in pencil on the front free endpaper. "Since 1848 (see above), the date of our last Catalogue, the Library has increased from six thousand volumes to sixteen thousand volumes; and, although a hastily prepared Supplement was printed in 1851, the titles of nearly six thousand volumes, the latest and most valuable additions to the Library, were not to be found on any printed Catalogue."     The catalogue includes a substantial historical sketch of the library and the acquisitions of books over a thirty-year period.  Along with a subscription fee of two dollars, members were obliged to present the Library with "one or more volumes, either in biography, history, voyages, travels, or works relative to mercantile subjest . . ."  The provision of the by-laws was later abolished as the books given were generally of worthless value.

Tallinn: Tallinna Raamatutrükikoda, 2006. Very Good/Very Good. Talinn: Tallinna Raamatutrükikoda, 2006. First Edition. Signed and dated by Tunne Kelam on the copyright page (15 September 2006). Quarto; 184pp. Over 150 paintings (full color) and photographs (B&W). Illustrated dust jacket. Black cloth boards with Sink's signature reproduced within a copper-colored label on front panel. Dust jacket shows very faint scuffs to coating, slight edge bumps. Volume near pristine. Entirely in Estonian with the exception of painting captions and two final summarizing chapters, which are in English. (Very scarce outside of Estonia; one copy cited in WorldCat; no other copies found in other bibliographic channels.) Peeter Sink (1902-1957) was an Estonian landscape painter working in a traditional naturalist mode, inspired by a strong Christian faith. This monograph is a tribute and conspectus put together by his son, Tunne Kelam, the Estonian politician and former member of the European Parliament. Peeter Sink's colors suggest Edvard Munch; his landscapes suggest Emily Carr-though Sink paints without the expressionist distortions of either. We are in a serene Estonian tradition that can be traced back to the quiet 15th-century portraits of Michel Sittow, and probably further still.
