Description
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1916. FIRST EDITION. Original publisher’s cloth, worn; moderately foxed throughout, annotations on paste-downs and blanks. First edition. Trotter (1872-1939), an English neurosurgeon, was also known for his work in social psychology, specifically herd instinct. In this, his classic work on the subject, he argues that gregariousness is an instinct, based upon his study of beehives, flocks of sheep and wolf packs. His analysis of group psychology and the ability of large numbers of people to be swayed through an innate tendency supports his conclusions on crowd behavior. According to Adrian Harrington, this work clearly influence Ian Fleming, as “Trotter’s theory is cited in ‘Live and Let Die’ (Cape, 1954, p. 220), and revisited in both ‘From Russia With Love’ (1957) and ‘Thunderball’ (1961).”.

Description
Paris: Alcan, 1889. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE. Contemporary green cloth-backed boards. Pencil notes throughout. In good condition. First edition, second issue, of Bergson’s doctoral thesis on time and free will. Here the French philosopher attempted to redefine the relationship between free will and causality and refute Kant’s understanding of time as a spatial model. This text introduces Bergson’s theory of duration, a highly influential position adopted by most 20th-century philosophers. Bergson (1859-1941) is known for his arguments that processes of immediate experience and intuition are more significant than abstract rationalism and science for understanding reality. He was awarded the 1927 Nobel Prize in literature not for a specific book but “in recognition of his rich and vitalizing ideas and the brilliant skill with which they have been presented.”.

Description
San Francisco: By the proprietor, 1900. Very good. Leather billfold, n. d. (early 20th century); 4 1/2 x 3 1/4; two piecs of polished, brown calf - stitched along three of the sides; tooled image to verso, silver lettering to recto; small spot to upper edge; minor wear to leather; in very good or better condition. The Louvre Restaurant in San Francisco was founded in 1884 by German-American enterpreneur Charles A. Zinkand, aka Chaz, who would be remembered for bringing "elegance, innovation, and a vibrant social experience to San Francisco’s dining scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries." Advertised as San Francisco's leading restaurant and cafe, it also boasted a live concert every evening of the week. It would be destroyed by the 1906 Great Earthquake, though it would re-open in a new location (1350 Fillmore & Eddy Streets) and would be renamed Portola-Louvre in 1910. The verso of the billfold featured a tooled image of two frogs, leaning on a gated fence and contentedly smoking, with the subtitle: "The Gate To ------" The recto displayed the name of Chaz and that of his establishment.
