First edition, first printing, with "First Impression, April, 1908" statement to copyright page and eight pages of ads to rear. Publisher's dark brown cloth, with gilt lettering to the front board and spine, and illustration of a woman's profile pasted to front board; lacking the scarce original dust jacket. Near fine, with some rubbing and a few very light marks to front board illustration, a touch of dimming to gilt on front board, bottom edge and corner of front board slightly bumped, contemporary ownership inscriptions to front free endpaper and rear pastedown, tiny nick (possible insect damage) to fore edge of pp. 209 - 246, and light spotting to a few pages. Overall, an extremely attractive copy of the first book in L. M. Montgomery's beloved Avonlea series. Housed in a custom brown and tan half morocco clamshell box. Anne of Green Gables is a story about a young orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who is sent to live on a farm on Prince Edward Island with a family who had originally intended to adopt a boy. Montgomery drew much of the novel's setting from her own childhood experiences living with her grandparents on the eastern coast of the island. Mark Twain gave the novel important early praise, hailing Anne Shirley as "the dearest and most moving and delightful child since the immortal Alice." Montgomery went on to write seven sequels to Anne of Green Gables, the first being Anne of Avonlea (1909). . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Illus. by Claus, M.A. (May Austin); Claus, William A.J. (William Anton Joseph).

About Fine
Description
1980 Original color photo of Satchel Paige in a Braves uniform throwing a baseball. Encased in a PSA slab ("Type II / Authentic"). About fine, with a tiny nick to top left corner. Overall, a great photo of the legendary pitcher later in life. Satchel Paige (1906-1982) had an incredibly long professional career, playing in the Negro Leagues from 1926 to the late 1940s, and finally joining the Cleveland Indians in 1948 when he was 42 years old. He was the seventh black player to join the major leagues, and the oldest player ever to debut in the MLB. In his rookie year with the team, he helped them win a World Series title. Sporting News ranked the blazingly fast pitcher 19th on its list of the 100 greatest baseball players of all time. This photo is from 1968, when Paige secured a role with the Atlanta Braves as an adviser to meet the five-year minimum service requirement for an MLB pension. . Type II Photograph. About Fine. 3 ½" x 5".

Description
Salt Lake City, UT: Skelton Publishing Company, 1910. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. 222pp. Octavo [21 cm] in red cloth with decorations on spine and front cover embossed in yellow and black (variant colors of binding cloth are known to exist; no priority known). Very faint rubbing to extremities, front board corners just barely exposed, a few light stains to rear board (only visible from an oblique angle); rear endsheet cracked along the hinge, text is crisp and unmarked. Autobiographical story of Elijah Nicholas Wilson, a Mormon boy on the wild western frontier. Wilson pursued many different occupations in his life, including Pony Express rider, stagecoach driver, trapper, rancher, and Indian agent. He spent time living with the Shoshone tribe, and was the ‘adopted brother’ of Chief Washakie. He was friendly towards the Native people, championed their causes, and spoke out against atrocities committed against them. This work has enjoyed consistent popularity for more than a century, and the edited, sanitized version is still in print today. This is a rare copy of the first edition, presumably suppressed by the Mormon Church. It contains an embittered account of how Wilson’s fiancée was prevailed upon to become the second wife of an elderly polygamist (pp. 194-200). Allegedly only twenty copies of the unrevised first edition were issued; the remainder were destroyed prior to distribution. The text was purged of the offending section and the revised, sanitized book was issued in an otherwise almost identical format in the same year (1910). Wilson was also critical of LDS Church leaders' handling of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, and of their handling of Indian affairs. Wilson, Wyoming was named in honor of him. Later revised by Howard R. Driggs and reissued as "The White Indian Boy: The Story of Uncle Nick Among the Shoshones." Flake 9909. Graff 4702. Howes W518.

Jacket with a trifle of soiling. A fine copy
Description
New York: Random House, 1953. From the Bart Auerbach Collection. Jacket with a trifle of soiling. A fine copy. 8vo. Photographs by Slim Aarons. Original cloth; pictorial dust jacket by Clifford Strohl Associates. First edition. Inscribed on the front free endpaper to Alan and Phyllis Sues: "For Alan & Phyllis – Two more loyal supporters a playwright never had. I am always touched by your kindness and enthusiasm. Affectionately Bob." Anderson's play stems from his experience of falling in love with an older woman while attending Phillips Exeter Academy. The male private school student, Tom Lee, faces accusations of homosexuality and the woman, Laura, opposes his shaming and romantically pursues him so he can prove his heterosexuality. The play's final line, "Years from now, when you speak of this, and you will, be kind," is one of the most quoted curtain lines in stage history. Alan Sues played the role of Ralph in the play (his Broadway debut). He and the actor/dancer Phyllis Sues married in 1953 and divorced in 1958. This could be confused for a dedication copy, as it was dedicated to another Phyllis: the playwright's wife, Phyllis Stohl.

Trajecti ad Rhenum [Utrecht, Netherlands]: Apud Guilielmum Kroon, 1729. FIRST EDITION. Title in red and black with engraved vignette, woodcut initials and tailpiece. Contemporary vellum, spine worn; interior excellent. . First edition of this fascinating group of sermons. The book contains outlines for a year-long cycle of sermons (52 Sundays) dealing with questions regarding the Heidelberg Catechism. “The Heidelberg Catechism (also known as the Palatinate Catechism) was composed in Heidelberg at the request of Elector Frederick III, who ruled the Palatinate, an influential German province, from 1559 to 1576. An old tradition credits Zacharius Ursinus and Caspar Olevianus with being coauthors of the new catechism. Both were certainly involved in its composition, although one of them may have had primary responsibility. All that is certain is reported by the Elector in his preface of January 19, 1563. It was, he writes, ‘with the advice and cooperation of our entire theological faculty in this place, and of all superintendents and distinguished servants of the church’ that he secured the preparation of the Heidelberg Catechism. The catechism was approved by a synod in Heidelberg in January 1563. A second and third German edition, each with small additions, as well as a Latin translation were published the same year in Heidelberg. Soon the catechism was divided into fifty-two sections so that one Lord’s Day could be explained in preaching each Sunday of the year. The Synod of Dort in 1618-1619 approved the Heidelberg Catechism, and it soon became the most ecumenical of the Reformed catechisms and confessions. The catechism has been translated into many European, Asian, and African languages and is the most widely used and most warmly praised catechism of the Reformation period.” Van Alphen (1700-1758) was a professor of theology at Utrecht, the son of theologian Simon Hieronymus van Alphen (1665-1742) and grandfather of poet Hieronymus van Alphen (1746-1803).
