Description
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1939. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good. A Near Fine copy in Very Good dust jacket. xl, 351 pp. Publisher's black cloth. Slight rubbing to one corner. Faint foxing to edges of closed text block and to lower pastedown. Red topstain mostly faded. Scarce dust jacket with spine faded, some foxing to spine and flaps, and a bit of chipping to edges and folds. Overall, an appealing copy of an uncommon work on Gandhian nonviolence strategy that inspired Black civil rights activists including Martin Luther King, Jr., Bayard Rustin, and the Freedom Riders. War Without Violence, the first English-language book by the Indian writer and civil rights activist Dr. Krishnalal Shridharani (1911 - 1960), analyzes nonviolent civil disobedience, particularly the strategy of satyagraha developed and named by Gandhi during the Indian civil rights movement. In the book, Shridharani describes the techniques, philosophy, and successes of satyagraha, and advocates for its use in civil rights struggles in the western world: "Like war, Satyagraha demands public spirit, self-sacrifice, organization, endurance and discipline...and I have found these qualities displayed in Western communities more than in my own," Shridharani writes, "Perhaps the best craftsmen in the art of violence may still be the most effective wielders of non-violent direct action" (p. xxxvi). The work had a profound effect on Black American activists - many of them friends and compatriots of Shridharani - including Martin Luther King, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois, Pauli Murray, and Bayard Rustin, the latter of whom described the book as "the gospel, our bible" during the Black civil rights struggle in the 1940s (quoted in Iyengar). War Without Violence continued to influence Black activists in the 1950s and 60s: King studied the book during the Montgomery bus boycott, and organizers with the Congress of Racial Equality read it in preparation for the Freedom Rides in 1961. Though Shridharani died young, at the age of just forty-nine, he had a rich activist career that begun when he was a university student. In 1930, he participated in the Salt March led by Gandhi, and was imprisoned during the nonviolent raid on Daharasa Salt Works in Gujarat. In the early 1930s, Shridharani moved to the United States to pursue his graduate studies, and began befriending and collaborating with many Black civil rights activists including Rustin and Du Bois. He spoke for the NAACP several times and contributed to The Crisis. Along with Shridharani's own experiences in the Indian civil rights movement, War Without Violence was inspired by this contact with Black American activists during the 1930s; the work, in turn, inspired Black activists for decades, long after Shridharani's return to India and his death in 1949. Iyengar, Malathi. "Activist, Scholar, Dandy: Krishnalal Shridharani in the United States, 1934-1946." South Asian American Digital Archive. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket.

1889. MUIR GLACIER BEFORE DEVASTATING CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS TABER, I. W. [photographer]. ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH: VIEW OF MUIR GLACIER AND MORAIN, GLACIER BAY, ALASKA. 8 x 9.5 inches, mounted on 11 x 14 inch board. Photo captioned at bottom: "4582. View of Muir Glacier and Morain, Glacier Bay, Alaska. Copyrighted by I. W. Taber, 1889." Mount chipped and torn, not affecting image, which is in fine and has warm sepia tones. Isaiah West Taber (1830-1912) was one of the most well known American photographers in California and the West in the late 19th century. His clients included Queen Victoria, seven U.S. presidents, Enrico Caruso, Lily Langtry and Sarah Bernhardt. A collection of his photographs of noted Californians was donated to the California State Museum. His studio in San Francisco also produced a series of stereoscopic views of western scenery. The studio, along with all of his glass negatives, was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.(Kurutz p.20) Muir Glacier, formerly the most famous of the tidewater glaciers, once rose 256 ft. above the water and was nearly 2 miles wide. It has been receding since the late 18th century and no longer reaches the sea.

Description
No binding. Very Good. Photo Vintage original 8 x 10"" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white double weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Mary Boland, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Phyllis Povah, Virginia Weidler, Lucile Watson, Marjorie Main, dir: George Cukor: MGM. One of the most famous films of the 1930s with the wittiest of scripts and dialogue. F. Scott Fitzgerald contributed to the script based on Clare Booth Luce's Broadway play. Superb in every respect, the film nonetheless was released during the most competitive year of superb film works and did not receive a single Academy nomination. Still labeled ""1091x174"" depicts the climatic final scene in which there is a major showdown amongst the film's main characters in a New York City nightclub ladies powder room. Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer were allowed to play out in character their dislike for each other in this scene. Queens of MGM, their reign would be over in two years. Shearer would retire while Crawford re-invented herself and moved on to an entirely new film career. Rosalind Russell's career would flourish as she went onto starring roles in films for another 25 years, while Paulette Goddard would have a leading lady reign throughout the 1940s. Others in the scene are Phyllis Povah, Mary Boland and Florence Nash. Hedda Hopper, not seen here, also appeared in this scene. Adrian gowned all the actresses. This photo, part of a series which told the plot of the film, includes its original typed blurb on the verso and also features the Hollywood Advertising Council Approval stamp, dated July 10, 1939. Very minor wear, ABOUT FINE.

Description
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Very Good+ in Good dj. (c.1930). First Edition. Hardcover. [book is just lightly shelfworn, vintage bookseller's label (The Three Schuster Stores, Book Department) on front pastedown; the jacket has a number of crudely-applied old/yellowed internal tape repairs (mostly fixing several tears on the spine, but also with a long strip (applied both internally and externally) along the front flapfold; most of the front panel illustration, fortunately, is unblemished]. (4 B&W film stills) The true first edition of this title, a novelization of "an original screen story written by Josephine Lovett," and starring Gloria Swanson -- then just on the cusp of a career eclipse from which she would emerge, spectacularly, twenty years later in SUNSET BLVD. The title page makes sure to inform us that the movie was a "United Artists Pictures, which Joseph P. Kennedy Presents" -- Kennedy, of course, having been engaged for the previous couple of years in an affair with La Swanson. By all accounts, their romantic relationship had ended by this time, but they were still involved as business partners in her production company, Gloria Productions, which she had formed with Kennedy a few years earlier. This film, directed by Allan Dwan, was its final production, and would probably have been classified by Norma Desmond as one of the "pictures [that] got small." (Fun fact: among the supporting players in this film was a "William Holden" -- but not THE William Holden who co-starred with her in SUNSET BLVD.) .
