Description
Leningrad: Leningradskii Kombinat Tsvetnoi Pechati, 1977. Softcover. Fifty six playing cards, including a title card, two jokers, and a blank; 3 1/2 x 2 1/4; original, illustrated, card stock box; box with a bump to lower right corner and a few closed cuts to top; original store label to flap; illustrated cards with very light wear, near fine or better condition. A beautiful set of playing cards, it was created and illustrated in the Palekh design tradition (a Russian folk handicraft of miniature painting - usually on black background with lavish gold, green, blue, and red colors) by artist Pavel Bazhenov for the 150th anniversary (1817 - 1967) of the Imperial Playing Cards Factory in St. Petersburg, founded by Emperor Alexander I as a way to channel revenue to orphanages and hospitals. In 1901, the factory workers would be some of the first ones to organize a strike and clash with theTsarist forces in support of the Obukhov Defence (a labor protest by the workers of the Obukhov Factory in, then, Leningrad). The company prospered for most of its life, but closed down permanently in 2004.
