Description
2 p.l., xix, 334 pp., one leaf of ads. 8vo, cont. green sheep-backed boards, flat spine decorated in gilt & blind. Paris: Crapelet, 1816. The very rare auction catalogue of the library of La Porte du Theil (1742-1815), French Hellenist and conservator of manuscripts at the Royal Library; he played a role in the early attempts to decipher the Rosetta Stone. The collection was particularly rich in rare Italian books along with a fine collection of bibliography (lots 3248-3326). The preliminary leaves contain a valuable bio-bibliography of the collector by Silvestre de Sacy. Very good copy and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. 3486 lots. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions…1643-1830, 564. N.B.G., Vol. 29, cols. 560-63.

Description
[Providence, RI?, 1840. [8] pp, written on two folded folio sheets in ink manuscript. A couple of closed tears, repaired with a few letters affected. This is likely Elton's draft of a final Report, as it has lines which have been crossed out and replaced with others. Very Good. Our candidate for authorship, Romeo Elton, was the longtime Professor of the Latin and Greek Languages and Literature at Brown. Elton identifies and analyzes the text books in use in his Department. The "practice of frequently changing authors accords with the practice in the most distinguished universities in Europe. It has been adopted in this Institution as far as practicable & is attended with beneficial results " He is critical of "the Greek Grammar now used in this Institution." It is "defective in many points." He suggests adding Eschenberg's Manual of Classical Literature to the curriculum. Elton lauds the study of the Classics, and denounces "the indolent student," who fails to understand "the vigorous exercise which they furnish to the intellectual powers.

Near Fine in Very Good+ dj
Description
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1933). Reprint. Hardcover. [a good sound copy, light foxing on bottom edge of text block but no other significant wear, one-time owner's name on front endpaper, more recent owner's initials plus date & place of purchase along edge of rear pastedown (beneath jacket flap); the attractive skull-themed jacket is a bit edgeworn, with a few small closed tears, slight fading at the spine] The first mystery to feature Bertram Lynch, ace investigator for the top-secret Permanent __________ of the League of Nations (does the United Nations have "ace investigators," I wonder?), who is here called upon to look into the murder of one of his colleagues. In so doing, he traces "the dangerous trail of murder through the little gin-mills in Port of Spain's underworld fringe, through guest houses in stately residential streets, through the tangled life of the tropical city into the hidden depths of the Caroni." The book was filmed (under the same title) by the Fox Film Corporation in 1933, with Nigel Bruce (later Dr. Watson to Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes) as Lynch, and is also said to have loosely inspired two later films, MR. MOTO IN DANGER ISLAND (1939) and THE CARIBBEAN MYSTERY (1945). Issued a few years later in a Triangle Books editon of markedly inferior quality. .

Description
Jewell City, Kansas: Dunham & Stidham, 1890. Cabinet card measuring 6 ½ x 4 ¼ inches. Pencil verso reads “Dora”. Some foxing to mount; photo with excellent contrast. Excellent to Near Fine.. A family portrait appearing to show a mixed-race couple and their children, taken by Dunham & Stidham in Jewell City, Kansas. Newspaper records indicate that Dunham & Stidham were active in Jewell City (now Jewell) between 1885 and 1890. Interestingly, despite Kansas’ fraught racial history, it was early to get rid of anti-miscegenation laws, repealing its law—which forbade marriage only between white and Black people—in 1859, prior to statehood.

Dutton & Co., Inc, 1958. 8vo.  205 x 135 mm., [8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches].  [16], 272 pp.  Gray publisher's cloth, embossed publisher's mark on upper board, blue label on spine, dust jacket.  Some very minor fraying to head and tail of spine, dust jacket with scrape to outer edge of front wrapper and tiny chips at head and tail of spine. First edition inscribed "For Julius Teller with affection Van Wyck Brooks/ 1958".   Van Wyck Brooks, the noted historian, Pulitzer Prize winner, and National Book Award recipient, investigates the  experience of American writers and artists in Italy before the WWI.  Focusing on Prescott, Bancroft, Cooper, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Adams, Twain, Wharton and Howells, and artists like West, Copley, Greenough and Powers, Brooks delves into the impact of Italy on the creations that came organically from this seductive country.  In doing so he offers insights into the changing nature of Italy over a century and a half since Americans began to travel to the cities of the ancient world and Renaissance period.
